GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 14 Dec 2003 FUNDACAO OFFERS TO RENOVATE SECRETARIAT: Fundacao Oriente is willing to renovate the Adil Shah Palace (Secretariat) if the State government accepts its proposal. Dr Carlos Monjardino, President of Conselho de Administracao, Fundacao Oriente, Lisbon, told presspersons at Hotel Mandovi on December 13 that the organisation would renovate the Secretariat with the help of experts from Portugal. He said that it was the general policy of the Fundacao Oriente to renovate the old heritage houses and expressed happiness over the renovation works carried out at Fontainhas. Referring to the funding procedure, he said that about Rs.1 crore is spent on various programmes in India every year. Portugal's President Jorge Sampaio would visit India in March next year, he informed. (WE-GT)
'PROMOTE MORE ASPECTS OF GOAN TOURISM': A group of Holland's leading travel agents, TUI Netherlands' Courtesy Club, were in Goa to take a look at what the State has to offer to European holiday-makers. Delhi-based Far Pavilions is TUI's partner in India. Far Pavilions MD Pranab Pal said, "TUI has begun operations to Goa this year and at present they have one aircraft per week with 100 arrivals." He added that the company planned to triple these figures during the next year. TUI's president Louis Frankenhuis stressed that more aspects of Goa need to be promoted than the standard Taj Mahal and beaches concepts. (WE-GT) POTENTIAL FOR CHARTER TOURISM: Compared to Kerala, Goa stands a far better chance for charter tourism, according to Louis Frankenhis, Executive Chairman of the Executive Board of TUI Nederland-a charter and tour operator of Netherlands. He, however, said, Goa needs to add the necessary infrastructure and also highlight its different facets instead of stressing only on sun, sand and surf. Goa's unique culture and cuisine also needs to be focused to promote tourism, he said. (H) MAPUSA COPS CRACK DOWN ON THIEVES: Mauvin Rebello of Chinchinim and Alvan Gonsalves of Cortalim decamped with a scooter parked at the Mapusa market by its owner Ashish Khorjuenkar. The theft occurred between 6 to 11 pm on 10th December. But the duo met with an accident at 11 pm near Cortalim and in the process suffered injuries. After being discharged from the GMC, the Verna police arrested them. (WE-GT) PEDESTRIAN KILLED: Tony Rodrigues, a resident of Bicholim, was knocked down and killed by a speeding motorcyclist at Calangute while he was walking along the Baga-Calangute road on December 9. The decision of the Orissa government to reserve 66.6 per cent of the total seats of the Xavier Institute of Management, Bhuvaneshwwar, for the local Oriya students despite the fact that many of the did not fulfill the criteria for admission prompted the founder director of the Institute, Fr Romualdo D'Souza, to hand over the management to the government of Orissa and come to Goa to start the Goa Institute of Management. Today this institute ranks among the top 20 management schools in the country. This can well be said to be a blessing in disguise for the Goans. (NT) VETERAN LAWYER DIES AT 101: Veteran Margao-based lawyer Atmaram Poi Palondicar died after a brief illness at his residence on December 12. He was 101. Late Palondicar was among the few lawyers who had the knowledge of both-Portuguese and English-laws. He is survived by five sons.
