Kayla is reported to have stated that the IFFI Goa in December 2004 will be a bigger success than the recently concluded festival in Delhi, and that the IFFI 2004 will give a tremendous boost to Goan tourism, besides its image. It is learnt that she has suggested that the panoramic riverfront behind the Kala Academy be suitably renovated to suit the occasion. (GT)
'HIGH REGARD FOR PRESS': Stung by the mounting criticism for issuing 'defamatory' notices to the newspapers, the Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar, on Monday said he didn't want to pursue the matter any further. He told a delegation of the Goa Union of Journalists that the issue of notices "should be considered as dead". The notices were sent as a means to prepare the ground for filing defamation cases against those who made the defamatory statements, and not against the press, he said, according to press note issued by the Press Liaison Officer to the CM, Mr Rajesh Singh. (H) JET FLIGHT DEVELOPS SANG: Passengers aboard a Mumbai-bound Jet Airways flight had a miraculous escape as the aircraft developed a snag as it was taxing along the runway and had to return to the terminal at Dabolim yesterday. IXTT' UNITES ROMAN SCRIPT KONKANI WRITERS: In order to bring together the scattered Konkani Roman script Writers, the Goa Konknni Akademi and the Konkani weekly, Vauraddeancho Ixtt, organised a one-day seminar for all the Konkani Roman script writers at Pilar on Sunday. GKA member Bhusan Bharve said that if both the scripts, namely Roman and Devnagri, grow and develop, then the Konkani language will simultaneously progress. He also reminded that the schemes which were meant only for devnagri script earlier, have now been made available for the Roman script the GKA. (NT) CHARGES FRAMED IN 'FINE ARTS' GANG RAPE CASE: The Additional Sessions Court on Monday framed charges for rape against Vishal Mehta and Roy Fernandes, who were accused of being involved in the gang-rape of the 18-year-old Fine Arts student a few months ago. (H) 20-YR-OLD BUSES TO GO OFF ROADS: The Minister for Transport, Mr Pandurang Madkaikar, said that all the public transport buses which have been plying for 20 years or more, would be taken off the roads from January 1, 2004. Mr Madkaikar said that the government would be providing subsidies for replacement as well as new purchases of public transport vehicles with a view to remove the old vehicles off the roads. (GT) RAPIST TOLD TO PAY FINE: The Fast Track Court in Margao sentenced a rapist (Mathias Cardoz of Guirdolim-Chandor) to nine days imprisonment with a fine of Rs.10,000 to be paid as compensation to the victim. The accused has already undergone the nine-day punishment during the trial. UPTO RS.10 LAKH LOAN: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar Inaugurated the "Rural Bazaar Goa 2003" organised by the Department of Rural Development and District Rural Development Agency at the Kala Academy Complex recently. Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister informed about the Chief Minister Rojgar Yojna under which a loan of upto Rs.10 lakh is available to self-help groups and the interest is as low as 3.5 per cent. About 67 stalls have been put up self-help groups and other artisans at the exhibition cum sale, which will remain open till October 23. (H) NARKASURS TO BE BURNT AT CAMPAL: The Corporation of the City of Panaji has in a major decision decided to ban the burning of Narkasur effigies on the streets of the city and instead an alternate site at the parade grounds situated at Campal has been identified for the same. Over the years, there has been an appreciable rise in the number of Narkasurs with a whopping 400 effigies already in the pipeline and taking shape in the city of Panaji. Veronica is a painter by profession, whose sincere devotion inspired her to create wonderful oil paintings on canvas, the art, which she believes is a gift of God and not a result of any formal training. The album contains eleven Konkani devotional songs, ten of which are composed and tuned by Veronica herself and musically supported by Neville Pereira.
