Today is also a very important day as it marks the 25th anniversary of the formation of Holy Family Choir in Kuwait under the leadership of Albino Fernandes who came to Kuwait then with all the know-how of organizing Church activities in Bombay. 25 years ago with full of youth and vigour, Albino with the help of his Church colleagues namely Organist Edward Camilo, Guitarist Johny Fernandes, Margareth Fernandes, Marie Gomes, Diana, Aubrey, Renita Mendonca, Joe Antao, Vera & Wilma D’Souza, Farida & Zarina, Bernanrd & Carrol, James & Jannet Franco, Brian, Anthony, Lydia, Audrey, Marcelino, Roque, Francis Xavier (now Fr. Francis) and Philipe Nazareth formed the Holy Family Choir in Kuwait.

The purpose of this Choir was to help the people in general and parishioners in particular in all their needs within the capacity of the Choir members. The main purpose to glorify God.

Within a year that is in 1981 this Choir engulfed in its fold more members namely Xavier Dias, Anthony Ubaldino Fernandes, Flloyd Castelino, Olga & Dorothy, Anklet Pinto, Remy Fernandes, Mario Fernandes, Lawry Rodrigues, Agusto & Luis Moraes, Donald, Suzie, Orlando D’Mello, Trumpeter Dias, Joseph-Lucy-Ronda Rebello, Margareth D’Cruz, Celine, George Gomes, Joe Silveira, Lourdes, Violonist Francis Machado, Neves, Juliao, Johny & Clara Rodrigues, Santolino Pereira, Olinda, musician Shahu, Pearl, Kevin, Espy & Simon.

During its 25 years of existence, Holy Family Choir under the leadership of Albino Fernandes and with the active support of all the Choir members helped in organizing not only Church related activities but also other cultural activities such as organizing of Parents Day functions where even some attractive entertainment programmes held. Besides, this Choir sang for many weddings and assisted in funeral services and when need arises it even helped financing the education of student. A few years back this Choir organized pilgrimage to Ahmadi Church and held religious services there. Many times this Choir proved to be of great assistance to many of the parishioners and some of its members had even joined together in the sacrament of matrimony. Many times this Choir helped many of the local Goan associations in organizing their cultural activities though it got involved more with Goan and Konkani activities. When the current Bishop of Kuwait Monsg. Francis Mechallef came to Kuwait and took over from the then retired Bishop Monsg. Victor Sanminguel, Albino’s Choir as it was popularly known organized a royal reception with an entertainment programme. In October 2000, it has released a nice Souvenir and proceeds of it were sent to Mother Theresa’s Mission in Calcutta, the amount being Indian rupees One Lakh. According to Albino, it is thru this Choir that he and many of his colleagues managed to gain limelight and reach to different segments of the society.

In 2001 in a sudden and unexpected development, the initiator and a force behind this Choir Albino Fernandes withdrew from this Choir when he found it beyond his control to put an end to the unfaithfulness of some of the members with the backing of clergy and present retiring Bishop Mechallef. In order not to damage the fair image of the Choir, Albino said he resorted to this drastic action on his part. When questioned, Albino said he had to take recourse to this action of withdrawing because he could not face the backstabbing by some of his own colleagues. Though Albino is no longer actively taking part in this Choir yet he harbours no anger but wishes the choir all the best and he feels this Choir has got a strong base and because of this base it survives and will survive though lot of unwanted criticism will come as it happened sometime back in the internet thru factious letters.

While speaking to this writer, Albino Fernandes said that he wishes everyone a very happy and glorious feast and stressed on thanking the following for their enormous cooperation for the promotion of this choir even though they are not members of this Choir. They are: Tiatrist Rosary Ferns, Jose Rod, Comedian Philipe, Goan Welfare Society, Canara Welfare Association, Anthony Telles, Lawry Pinto, Max the Drummer, Dennis Base Guitarist, Sucorro the musician, Drummer Niranjan, Daniel Camilo the Saxophonist, Joe Borges, Tony Shuwaikh Electrical and Mr. & Mrs. Wilfred. These are the people whom Albino said he remembers well but by mistake anyone is forgotten, he apologises.
