GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 03 Oct 2003 'GOA TOMORROW' INAUGURATED: 'Goa Tomorrow', an organisation formed to uphold the interest of common man was inaugurated on October 2, in Ribandar at the hands of Rajan Narayan, Editor of Herald. Speaking at the inaugural function Mr Narayan said that no organisation so far taken up serious issues such as the public health emergency in Panjim resulted from contamination of the water pipelines with the hepatitis A and E virus. Mr Narayan also urged Mr Martins to take up on priority basis the cause of thousands of Goans investors in non-banking companies who had lost their life savings. Mr Martins told media persons that the launching of 'Goa Tomorrow, was the realisation of the old dream he had natured for more than three decades. Mr Martins pointed out that the need for such an organisation is felt because of the impotence of the opposition and the Chief Minister's attempts to muffle the freedom of media in Goa. PARRIKAR MUST APOLOGISE TO THE PRESS: Speakers on the panel discussion held on October 2 on 'Experiments with Truth', strongly expressed the view that the notice of defamation issued to the media by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar was not only a fight of the press but a fight of the people of Goa. (H) HARD WORK IS A REAL TRIBUTE TO GANDHIJI: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar led the people of Goa in paying glowing tributes to the memory of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi on his 133rd jayanti at a function held in Old Goa yesterday. Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said the Mahatma believed in action and therefore commitment by every citizen to work more for the society would be a real tribute to the Father of the Nation. Later, the Chief Minister visited the Old Goa panchayat and paid floral tributes to the memory of Lal Bahadur Shastri on his Jayanti. (NT) LIGHTNING STRIKES BUS SHED: A sudden bolt of lightning injured three persons, one to them seriously, on October 2 at Madditolop near Mashem in Canacona, at about 4.45 pm. The three persons-Anthony Pereira (29) of Loliem, Sanjay Kamat (28) of Tarir and Clement Pereira (45) of Kinlebag-Canacona-were taking shelter at a bus shed at Madditolop due to a sudden shower. A bolt of lightning struck the shed whereby Anthony was flung to the ground and sustained serious head and burn injuries. (H) MLAS' VIEWS INVITED: The state government has finally formed the MLA Local Area Development Scheme on the lines of the MPs scheme and each legislator will get Rs.20 lakh for developmental work every year. The government has sent a draft to the MLAs eliciting their views and suggestions by 10 October, 2003. (GT) EFFORTS IN ERADICATING DISEASES: Importance of public health is not appreciated today because efforts of the persons involved in eradicating the diseases are not recognised by the society, stated Dr Anant Kamati Wagh, the former director and founder member of The Tuberculosis Association of Goa. He said that various calamities and diseases are constantly avoided and prevented by countless dedicated people, but they often go unnoticed by the society at large. (GT) TRAFFIC NORM VIOLATION UNDER CONTROL: The traffic cell, Vasco, booked 23,332 cases under the Motor Vehicles Act and collected total fine amounting to Rs 25,03,350 during the last nine months. The cell, during the corresponding period last year, had booked 6,336 cases and collected a total amount of Rs 6,69,200 as a fine. The police inspector (traffic cell), Vasco, Mr G B P Mhapne who took over the charge on January 4, 2003 stated that "the violation rate of Motor Vehicles Act has come down drastically, as the traffic cell, Vasco has maintained strict vigil. (NT) BENAULIM CALLS FOR RECOVERY OF HOUSE TAX: House tax arrears to the tune of Rs 18-odd lakh is certainly huge, if not mindboggling. No one realised this better than the gram sabha members of the Benaulim village panchayat on Thursday, when they were informed that the panchayat's house tax arrears has crossed Rs 18 lakh. While expressing concern over the increasing arrears, the gram sabha called for a drive to recover the taxes by issuing demand notices on the erring parties. (H) TO BOOST SOFTWARE FIRMS' TOPLINE: Top tier Indian software companies should see strong topline growth in FY04 due to the country's emergence as an attractive destination for outsourcing, while the volume-led growth would keep margins under pressure, according to credit raging agency Icra's report on IT. "The primary reason for the growth in topline is India's emergence as an attractive destination for outsourcing. Though the global as well as US IT spending still remains subdued, India has gained more visibility as an outsourcing destination," said the report. (PTI report in GT) ANIMAL CENSUS TO START: All types of animals-cattle, buffaloes, sheep, goats, donkeys, camels and others-will be counted as per the 17th All India Quinquennial Livestock Census to be carried out in all villages and urban areas from 15 October, 2003. The census data will also include pigs, dogs, rabbits, poultry, agricultural machinery and implements and fisheries statistics. (GT) DEPORT OUTSIDE COMMERCIAL SEX WORKERS: The Panjim Bench of the Bombay High Court has directed that the 250 cubicles used for carrying out the sex trade at Baina, Vasco be closed, and that the commercial sex workers brought in from outside the State be deported back to their home State. The division bench of the High Court comprising Justice F I Rebello and Justice P V Hardas has admitted the petition filed by "Savera", a group of residents of the Mormugao Municipal Council concerning the `red light area' at Baina as well as the plight of the commercial sex workers. In its judgement, the court has directed the District Collector of the Baina district to take steps along with other officers concerned to close the 250 cubicles used for carrying on the sex trade. All the concerned parties have been directed to submit a compliance report to the High Court within nine months. (H) TO PROTECT BOAT OWNERS: Nelson Cabral, former councilor of PMC, has submitted to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, a list of grievances in connection with modification of guidelines regulating the registration of boat rides and water sports activities. (GT) CAZUGOTO IN QUEPEM CRIES FOR ATTENTION: Cazugoto village in Pirla panchayat in Quepem taluka would probably be the least attractive place in the State. The panchayat office is over 40 kms by road, the police station is about 35 kms from Cazugoto, the nearest health centre is about 20 kms away and during elections, you would be expected to walk 5 kms to vote at the nearest polling booth. Cazugoto, which is situated on the top of the hill is without proper roads and the 100-odd residents in the village are solely dependent on spring water for their drinking water requirements. For medication, they depend on herbal medicine, in the absence of medical facilities. (H) DABAL VILLAGERS PROTEST: Following complains by villagers of Morconem and Bandol in Kirlapal Dabal village regarding the dust pollution, Sanguem Mamlatdar Agnelo Fernandes convened a meeting of the aggrieved villagers and representatives of a mining company on September 29 to at an amicable solution to the issue. The villagers claim that the road is rendered unusable and the same gets filled with muddy water by 8 am. The villagers also complained of the acute drinking water supply faced by the villagers here on account of extraction of mineral ore and the subsequent depletion of water bed. (H) LECTURES BY FRENCH SPECIALISTS: Three lectures by French specialists in telemedicine, water management and astronomy have been organised jointly by the French Embassy and Alliance Francaise on 6, 8 and 13 October. Aimed at simplifying the complex scientific knowledge and diffusing it to the laymen, the talks of 45-minute duration will be followed by illustrative films. Philippines had all three of its boxers - Harry Tanamor, Lerio Arlan and Parrenas Warlifo - make it to the finals while two more pugilists Junard Ladon and F Lournic, who will be seen in action tomorrow, are also expected to take the same route.
