GREENS GIVE CM A MOUTHFUL: As expected the NGOs did not take kindly to being
branded as 'eco-terrorists' for their stance on some environmental issues
and said they were only playing the role of the Opposition. Chief Minister
Manohar Parrikar had recently come down harshly on NGOs who had played a
role in the 'hasty' notification of Mhadei and Neturlim wildlife sanctuaries
(during President's rule) in the absence of elected representatives. At an
open forum on 'Eco-Terrorism: Kitna such, Kitna jhoot' organised by the Goa
Union of Journalists yesterday (Dec 27), environmentalists said they were
only asking queries on certain issues which the opposition should be posing
to the government. Countering Parrikar's statement about the 'fraudulent'
notification, the NGOs said the process had started in the mid-seventies
with the demarcation of reserve forest areas and the notification was
approved at different levels of administration. (WE-GT)

MES STUDENT DROWNS IN DUDHSAGAR RIVER: A group of about 64 BCom students of
MES College, Zuarinagar, had gone for a picnic at Signala Kond-Dudhsagar on
December 27. While most of the students went for a dip in the nearby Signala
Khond river, two of the students including Krishna Hanumant Toravi, of
Karnataka, went for a swim in the Dudhsagar river. A short while later,
Krishna was dragged into the water by strong currents. Lifeguards rescued
one student, but were unable to save Krishna. (H)

ANJUNA PANCHAYAT YET TO ACT: The Anjuna panchayat is yet to implement its
decision to stop foreigners from running restaurants in its jurisdiction
despite adopting the resolution four days ago. Emboldened by the panchayat's
perceived indifference, foreigners began operating their restaurants from
the second day itself, say members of the Anjuna-Vagator-Caisua Bar,
Restaurant & Shack Owners' Association, whose agitation forced the panchayat
to adopt the resolution. (NT)

TO BOOST INDIAN TOURISM: India needs to consolidate its tourism industry and
add better infrastructure if it wants to compete with other major
destinations in the world, opines Delhi-based tourism expert Pranab Pal, the
founder director of Far Pavilion, a leading tourism company. Pal revealed
that India receives only a small portion of the world's tourists-an amount
disproportionate to the country's potential. (WE-GT)

VELIM RESIDENT DIES IN ROAD MISHAP: Beneditto Correia, aged 51, of Velim,
died on December 26 morning, after a mini-bus knocked him down in the Velim
market area. (NT)

TEACHERS MADE TO LEARN GOVT 'SYLLABUS': The integrity and credibility of Goa
's teaching community came under minute scrutiny in 2003. In June itself, a
government circular was issued to ensure that a teacher completed a total of
21 and not 18 working hours in a week. In July, the government decided to
check on the overall performance of the teaching community, particularly in
government schools, to review the not-so-fair performance at the SSCE exams.
Yet another order cracked down on the teaching community conducting private
business. The teachers were in the spotlight again for the SSCE paper
leakage. Alleged harassment of a girl student by three professors of the
Microbiology Department at the Goa University, sexual assaults on
school-going children in Malkarnem and Valpoi by government primary
teachers, etc, were the other issues on the teaching front. (H)

FATORPA ZATRA BEGINS: A six-day festival of the revered deity "Shantadurga
Fatarpekareen" at Fatorpa began yesterday (Dec 27) accompanied by religious
fervour and gaiety. The temple of the famous deity is given an artistic
touch by artisans from the South. A host of programmes are lined up to
entertain the devotee and the tourists alike. Famous Goan folk art like
"Ghoddemoddni" will be performed at night on 29 and 31 December. The
"ambari" (elephant chariot) procession will be held today. (WE-GT)

'SUNAPARANT' WILL MIRROR GOANS' ASPIRATIONS: 'Sunaparant' will be a
newspaper in Konkani and as a newspaper not just support Konkani but support
and fight for the fulfillment of the aspirations of Goans. It is not going
to be the status symbol of Konkani movement alone. 'Sunaparant' will be the
status symbol of Goa. (Industrialist Dattaraj Salgaocar in Panorama-NT)

LONE (WOMAN'S) PHOTO ON WANTED LIST: The Goa police's action of displaying
the photograph of a woman under the 'most wanted' list on its website has
shocked some prominent citizens in the state. According to a press note,
former Lok Sabha MP Shantaram Naik says that he was surprised that the Goa
Police website mentions only one individual as being 'Most Wanted' by them,
and that too, a lady by name Anupriya Vijay Anvenkar. He suggested that all
the suspected criminals, wanted by the police should be included in the
'Most Wanted Gallery' of the police website, without any discrimination. (H)

MAN'S DEATH WAS MURDER: The second autopsy test on the body of Floriano
Diniz has confirmed that the death was due to murder and not by suicide. The
death of Floriano was initially registered by the Quepem police as suicide.
Subsequently, a case was registered under Section 302 of IPC and Angela
Diniz, wife of the deceased was arrested. (H)

ANDERSON MARINE ON AUCTION BLOCK: The Economic Development Corporation Ltd
has announced the sale of M/s Anderson Marine Private Limited at
Zorinto-Sancoale, and Vishwas Steels Limited at Dhargal, for non-payment of
arrears of the loan amount. (WE-GT)

GREAT YEAR FOR TIATR 'MOGIS': The year 2003 was a very good one for tiatr
lovers as they were offered a surfeit of shows by tiatrists. Some of the
shows in this year were truly fascinating while some were so-so and some
rank terrible. (Julio D'Silva in WE-GT)

CITY TEMPLE TOO CELEBRATES: The spirit of Christmas was also high among the
Hindu brethren in Panjim city as a tiny Ganesh temple in the heart of Panjim
market was festooned with X'mas stars and lanterns for the festive season.

DADRA-NAGAR HAVELI DANCERS PERFORM IN ANJUNA: Rustic adivasi men and women
dancers belonging to the Varli, Konknna and Doodia tribes presented a
performance of exciting tribal dances at the Anjuna church campus on
December 27 evening. They danced the vibrant Tharpa, Dhol, Khanta,
Thur-Thali and Bhohadda dances. It was a rare and colourful portrayal of
their ancient culture and folklore, which has been brought to Goa by the
Pilar Fathers. The group came under the supervision of Fr Francis Fernandes,
sfx, who has been functioning among the tribals for the last 12 years. The
group had performed earlier at Porvorim, and will do so in Siolim and Mapusa
on December 28, at Borda-Margao and Navelim on December 29, at
Vaddem-Sanguem and Sanguem Church campus on December 30, winding up their
Goa tour on 31 December with Pilar and Goa Velha. Earlier children from each
of Anjuna's wards presented a cultural programme, as part of the overall
celebrations to mark the 4th Centenary of the Anjuna Parish & Christmas
Programme. (GoaNOW)
