MEMO: EC BEGINS PROBE: The two-member committee set up by the Election Commission to conduct a probe into the controversial memo episode quizzed several government officials vis-à-vis the complaints of violation of the model code of conduct yesterday. While the ASI attached to the Special branch CID Centre, Mapusa, has been summoned to depose in the memo episode before the panel comprising Dr PC Kapoor and P Marapandiyan on March 30, the panel quizzed the government officials regarding the breach of code by the government. (GT) GOVT OKAYS ORDINANCE TO FORM IFFI PANEL: The Goa cabinet yesterday approved an ordinance that provides for a 13-member panel led by the State's Chief Secretary to issue statutory permissions for International Film Festival of India related development works under a single-window system. "The committee, however, will not have powers to override provisions of the statues. What the ordinance in effect will do is cut the red-tape involved in the physical movement of files from one statutory authority to another," Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told journalists. (H) DR WILLY IS ALLIANCE CANDIDATE: Nationalist Congress Party has announced the name of its Goa president Dr Wilfred de Souza as the alliance candidate for the North Goa seat in the ensuing Lok Sabha polls. Party sources said the lone NCP MLA has been chose for the Panaji parliamentary seat and that a formal announcement would be made today. (GT) AUDA IS UGDP'S CHOICE FOR SOUTH GOA: The United Goans Democratic Party in a surprise move has named Auda Viegas as their candidate for the Mormugao constituency for the forthcoming parliament elections. Radharao Gracias, vice president of the party addressing a press conference, disclosed that they have decided to field a lady candidate as women makeup for 60 per cent of the vote bank in the South Goa constituency. (GT) AND NOW EDUCATIONAL ESTATES IN GOA: With the government formally constituting the Goa Education Development Corporation on March 18, Goa could become the first State in the country to set up educational estates (like industrial estates), to promote the establishment and growth of educational institutions, services and facilities to develop competitive and value-based education in Goa.The sources informed that initially two sites have tentatively been chosen for establishing the educational estates-about 150 acres in Colvale and about 300 acres in Dhargal. (NT) FOREST CONTRACTOR ARRESTED, RELEASED: The Forest department has confirmed that the government-owned Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation had no licence or permission to fell any tree at the old GMC Complex at Campal till today. In fact, three licences were issued only on March 29 evening-a day after felling of trees had to be abandoned due to public protests. (H) PLANS TO CONVERT SECRETARIAT INTO HISTORICAL GALLERY: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, told pressmen, that he was of the opinion of changing the existing Secretariat heritage building into a gallery displaying pre-Portuguese history of Goa, after the administrative set up of the government is shifted to the new complex at Porvorim. The government is trying to shift the Secretariat to Porvorim by August 15, he said. (NT) COAL POLLUTION: Mormugao councilor Ms Felicity D'Souza has criticized KP Rao, chairman of Pollution Control Monitoring Committee, for declaring Vasco free from coal pollution. Extending her wholehearted support to the agitation against pollution, the MMC councilor stated that instead of minimizing, coal pollution has increased thereby adding to the woes of the Vascoites. The open area between the ticketing counter of shuttle service and the Sulabh toilet is being used by unconcerned people to ease themselves in the open and though there is law to act against these people no one seems to be bothered. (NT) CITY THEATRES SET FOR MAJOR OVERHAUL: The capital city's existing three cinema halls are headed for are incarnation of sorts ahead of this year-end scheduled International Film Festival of India. Panjim's first commercial cinema hall National Theatre, and the Harish Zantye-owned Ashok-Samrat twin cinema houses, according to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, will be converted into mini multiplexes. "The National theatre structure will be wholly demolished and rebuilt to have two screening halls of 200-250 capacity each," Parrikar said. (NT) 9-FOOT KING COBRA RETRIEVED FROM WELL: A nine-foot King Cobra was yesterday retrieved from a well in Brahmakarmali, in Sattari, by Amrut Singh, a member of the animal rescue squad, Bicholim. Amrut climbed down into the 33-foot deep well with a ladder and caught the snake after a courageous effort. He said the snake would be released after a discussion with the Chief Conservator of Forests today. (GT) MANGALSUTRA SNATCHED: A mangalsutra worth Rs.15,000 was snatched by an unidentified youth at Dhanva-Thivim on Monday. Mapusa police said 53-year-old Vilasini Shirodkar was returning home from the panchayat office, when a youth riding a scooter approached her on the pretext of enquiring about an address. He then snatched her mangalsutra and fled from the scene. (H) MORJIM CHURCH CENTENARY ENDS: The centenary year celebrations of Our Lady of Miracles Church, Morjim, will end on March 30.
