AFTER EFFECTS OF THE TSUNAMI: SEEN FROM COASTAL VASCO

From Daniel F. de Souza
danielf at sancharnet.in

It's 00.00 hrs now and I have just returned back after a visit to the Baina
shores and its adjoining areas. The after effects of the
earthquake-triggered giant tsunami in Indonesia have also been felt in this
coastal region of Vasco.

The level of water along the Baina coast increased rapidly and gradually
subsided thereafter. Some boats lying on the shore were also were in the
danger of being washed away, and, fearing this, the fisherman were taking
precautions to secure them safely higher on the shore.

The level of water has risen to such a level on the shore which otherwise is
normal only during the monsoons.

People living near to the coast behind the MPT hospital and the areas along
the Baina beach belt were running to safety in total panic along with their
children and whatever belongs they can manage.

I noticed one family even moving out in a tempo with personal belongings.
Several cars were parked out on the road along the Baina side facing towards
Vasco, presumably in readiness to flee in the event of any emergency.

Most of the people living near to the coast are migrant workers and are
housed in small shanties. At the Baina beach there were hundreds of people
who had come out on the beach to watch the natural phenomenon.

The Vasco Police have stationed their personnel and a control van is around
to render any help on the Baina shore. Besides, an ambulance is also
stationed at the beach-side.

People are seen grouping together with total anguish.

I was told that the people living in the huts around the masjid area were
moved to safety because the water had almost entered their dwelling place.

On visiting the Kharewada area, people were seen standing outside their
houses. The houses in this area are touching the coast, facing the MPT's
berth No. 10 and 11.

The activity at the Port is however normal with four vessels working at the
berth numbers. 8,9,10, and 11 respectively. Besides there are six fishing
trawlers and two trans-shipper vessels anchored inside of the breakwater (EOB)
and other vessels too are working at WOB.

The high-water timings are scheduled at 02.24 hrs today, and this is
precisely what is causing the residents of the coastal areas a little of
panic in this port town..

It is understood the level of water has also gone high in the coastal areas
of Agonda, Palolem and the adjoining coastal areas in the south.

[Goanet]Tidal Wave - Help

2004-12-26 Thread Rick Palmer
Hello:

I hope you can help me.

We have two family members traveling in the Goa area and staying in a tent
on stilts on the beach and we have not heard from them. Do you know if
there was any warning before the water rose and do you know if there are any
Americans injured or worse?

We are concerned so any help/information you can provide would be greatly
appreciated!

Thank You,

Rick Palmer

[Goanet]Interview with Helga de Rosario Gomes

2004-12-26 Thread Gilbert Lawrence
Great post on the interview with our own GoaNetter Helga de Rosario
Gomes.
The undersea flora that Helga and others are studying is often compared
to the trees on land. The latter are the earth's lungs and produce
oxygen for survival of all living creatures on the land. Phytoplankton
and other undersea flora play a similar role undersea. Hence the role of
and the changes in the phytoplankton are believed to lead to long-term
consequences on oxygen levels in the oceans and undersea life. Perhaps
Fred can explore more of this when he interviews Helga next.

2004-12-26 Thread Joel D'Souza
GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS
December 26-27, 2004

10,000 DIE IN KILLER QUAKE: The world's biggest earthquake in 40 years hit
southern Asia on Sunday (December 26) unleashing a tsunami that crashed into
Sri Lanka and India, drowning thousands and swamping tourist isles in
Thailand and the Maldives killing 9,000 people, including over 3,200 in
India alone, and leaving tens of thousands homeless. (GT)

TIDAL WAVES HIT GOA TOO: The tidal waves also hit Goa, more towards midnight
and while several incidents were reported, Palolem and Patnem were some of
the worst affected areas. People in some coastal parts of Goa specially
fishermen, trawler-owners and shack owners, were kept awake and alert as the
surging water did cause problems and triggered panic. The villagers in
Patnem, Colomb and Palolem stretched vacated their houses and fled to safety
after the sea level rose dangerously, sweeping the shacks and other
structures on the beaches. (GT)

EFFECTS FELT IN GOA: The State administration was put on alert even as
trawlers venturing into the sea were prohibited and ferry service on some
routes withdrawn to prevent any possible effects of the earthquake. There
were, however, reports that sea water level had risen in the afternoon
causing panic to the residents across Mandovi and also to ferry commuters.
The chairman of Mandovi Fishermen Co-operative Society, Victor Gonsalves,
said in the evening that nearly 100 trawlers were in deep sea. (H)

TSUNAMI DOCUMENTED FOR THE FIRST TIME: Dr Satish Shetye from the National
Institute of Oceanography, Dona Paula, has said that this was the first time
that the tsunami tidal waves could be documented. He pointed out that the
event took place at 6.30 am IST when the strong shallow earthquake measuring
around 8.5 to 8.9 on the Richter scale hit the Indonesian island of
Sumatra. With regard to effects felt along the west coast of the country, Dr
Shetye said that people have to be cautious and also be on a lookout for any
unusual occurrences. In the over-100 km state coastline, the locals fear
that the tidal waves could disturb their normal life. (H)

CONCERN OVER RISE IN CRIME: People have voiced their concern over the rise
in crimes, specially theft cases, which have been reported in South Goa. The
influx of economically weaker migrant labourers who work for various
projects in South Goa is cited as the major reason. (NT)

PSYCHOLOGY FESTIVAL: Stating that ramifications of psychology are
interesting and useful in different spheres of life, DIG Muktesh Chander has
said everyone has an opportunity to make the best use of it. He was speaking
at the inauguration of the State-level intercollegiate Psychology festival
'Xavier's Psychoblitz 2004 at St Xavier's College of Arts, Science and
Commerce, Mapusa. (H)

CURTORIM COMUNIDADE DECIDES TO TAKE ACTION: The managing committee of the
Curtorim Comunidade has decided to identify illegal encroachments on
Comunidade land and initiate legal action against the offenders. (NT)

JAGOR AT SIOLIM: The famous traditional Jagor Utsov will be celebrated at
Siolim today (December 27) at 10.00 pm. For several years the Jagor has been
a symbol of Hindu and Christina amity. There will be a Konkani tiatr
Gireskay on the occasion.

MAN COMMITS SUICIDE: One Sudesh Anant Naik, a 38-year-old married man from
Usgaon, Ponda, committed suicide on Friday night by hanging himself to a
ceiling fan. (NT)

VCD ON KONKANI PLAY: The Minister for Water Resources, Mr Filipe Neri
Rodrigues recently released the VCD of Konkani play Sangat Ami Bhurguim
Konnachim by Mr Mario Menezes. (NT)

RAUT ELECTED MGP CHIEF: Former Minister Pandurang Raut was elected unopposed
president of the MGP after Shailesh Borkar, who was also in the fray,
withdrew his nomination papers. Raut was earlier the working president of
the party. (GT)

NAIK BAGS INDIRA GANDHI SADHBHAVANA AWARD: Noted agriculturist, proprietor

Re: [Goanet] SONG ON FOOTBALLER CRISTIANO JUNIOR

2004-12-26 Thread www.goa-world.com/goa/
I have a keen eye to details, specially when it comes
to Tiatr and Tiatrists. Hence my comments as below,
often of those whose only ambitions are to circulate
copies under the door mats:

[Goanet]SONG ON FOOTBALLER CRISTIANO JUNIOR
A. Veronica Fernandes writes:
HERITAGE MUSICAL SHOW 05.
In the past M. Boyer was known to compose fast songs
on the latest topics.
In Kuwait we also have Rosary Ferns who is also known
to compose fast songs on the latest topics.
- Yes, Rosary Ferns song 'Kavllo rodlo lozen' is
indeed a good composition in his recently released
VCD. This does not mean that M.Boyer can be equated
to this talented youngster by a guy who does not have
an indepth knowledge of what's tiatr and what's a
musical show. Please say the rosary three times today
for a better enlightenment!
Please do not bluff Konkani tiatr lovers. The great
artiste that he is, M.Boyer does not need such a
mention in bad light from an unknown entity for
publicity gimmicks of a musical show.

Rosary Ferns in his songs describes in detail all the
aspects of the injury, soccer and death of the
Brasilian.
- I am sure Rosary will not take the bait and do a
number of controversial songs. How many songs can be
sung by a single artiste on the same topic unless the
audience goes for a 'Condolence Meet'. Please get a
replay done of the TV news before the audience gets
injured themselves and bore to death.

For all the soccer lovers listening to this song is a
must and it will be on 14.01.05 at Hawally A/C Hall
during the Heritage Musical Show 05.
- Hope this does not get the roustead audience wild
and make you collect the legwear and disposables
showered on you.

- What's so funny in advertising the A/C Hall! It's
cold in here - 8-15 Degree Centigrades, with an upward
trend going in the bottom direction as the show date
nears. Indeed a free cup of tea/coffee by the
organizers will indeed satisfy the roustaed audience
seated in the A/C Hall before they scramble on you
thinking it's white (nay blue eyed) Christmas.

Tiatrists are known to highlight some of the important
topics of day to day life and Rosary Ferns in Kuwait
is also doing so.
- Wake up, Santa Claus has come to town.

Besides him there are others too who sing on different

topics but Cristiano Junior's topic is very sensitive.

- Did you miss the replay. If so, visit the archives
of goanet or footballindia.com
I am positive that Fidelis Fernandes will see to it
that such topics are not repeated, under his
direction. He is know to give a wholesome
entertainment and has a good know-how of organizing
unlike the guy in question.

Rosary depicts in his song the correct picture of the
incident and highlights on many other things about
this topic in his song.
- Please do not go too bostereous as even a strong
bull ultimately leads to the slaughter's. What correct
picture can be given after the medics version.

Everything one will come to know while listening to
this trio on 14th January at 4.00 pm during the
Heritage Musical Show 05.
- If this is a musical show in the name of Cristiano,
let's instead organize a football tournament and give
him a resounding farewell and the collected proceeds
to the family of the deceased. This will indeed show
a Goan's gratitude rather than be entertained on the
cost of the departed soul. Musical Show depicting sad
stories does not auger well with roustaed audience as
per a previous posting by this fellow.

The local press is highlighting the news of this show
and technicolour handbills are already distributed at
Sour Ground and near the Church.
- Which tiatr/show is not publized free of charge by
the local English dailies. Did you see a colourful
tri-colour handout print in technical colour of 'Hem
Kazar Koslem - musical show' and 'Lokachim Tondam
Bond'. Please visit the archives of
www.goa-world.com/goa/ if you have a memory lapse.

Besides, all the artistes locals as well as visiting
will give fabulous entertainment of songs like solos,
duets, trios and quartets.
- Hope the old songs are not sung and the audience
taken for a ride in an oft-repeat situation comedy
gimmicks as last time.

The visiting artistes are topmost comedian Prince
Jacob
- Isn't Comedian Ben Evengelisto voted 'the Best
Comedian by GULAB' - as we read it as 'Topmost
Comedian'? If this is not so, then we demand a
re-count.

.latest young collegian Goan sensation Veeam Bond
Braganza who is rightly dubbed as second Lorna
- Good introduction. Let's hope for the best.

The great singer Miss LORNA herself visits Kuwait for
the KGTS 2nd musical show in February 2004! Is this
breaking news, it sure is.

and a great author of so many books and writer of
high grade Bonaventure Pietro who will dazzle the
crowd by playing on the stage blowing instruments.
- High grade in what? Do not feel shy to write about
Konkani? What happened to the 'Sahitya Award' you guys
had expected? Will it ever come? The writer of high
grade is plagued and suffering

--- Aires Rodrigues [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
After the details of the Ribandar Church molestation case were made public
I have received a lot of written and oral complaints about grave sexual and
financial improprieties going on in other Parishes across Goa. I requested
that all these complaints be sent directly to the Archbishop's palace.

Given the lack of response from the Archbishop's house, what is the next step
for victims? In the
USA, there is a Survivor Network of Abused Priests, see
http://www.snapnetwork.org/. Perhaps,
there should be a meeting of similar cases in Goa, although I fully recognize
the shame people may
have in coming forward and the fear of not being supported publicly, especially
by a laity
complicit by its silence (including most cybergoan Catholics). Perhaps some of
the Goan
priests/nuns on this forum will have the courage to speak out assuming they
will not suffer any
retribution by their Catholic orders or teaching institutions they might be
affliated with.

As you know the Church is very powerful and unresponsive to the people's
 pulse. Till date
instead of attempting to fix the problem the Church seems to do
everything possible to cover its unholy acts. And for this they shrewdly use
the services of a cotorie of some wise lay people that evolves around the
Church to do the dirty job of damage control.

In the USA, after the initial denial, stonewalling,
burying-the-head-in-the-sand and
sweep-under-the-carpet approach, the Church was forced by legal claims to come
clean. It has cost
the US Catholic church over a billion dollars to settle claims and counting,
over 11,000 claims of
sexual abuse have been reported, at least 3 dioceses are in bankruptcy and
counting, and several
parishes have been closed. Not to mention the negative publicity, etc. Perhaps
the Goa Church
might learn a lesson here?

I took up the Ribandar Church molestation issue after deep thought and
ascertaining all the facts. Before we went public on the issue I pleaded
with the Co-ordinator of our Ribandar Parish Council to call a open meeting
of all parishioners so that this issue could be discussed and the facts be
faced dead on. This they dared not do and expected that the truth could be
supressed and that they would be able to hush up the matter.

You might recall the Irish singer Sinead O'Connor who found the church
unresponsive in this matter
about 10 years ago. She tore a picture of the Pope on US national television
and took a lot of
heat for it, including an adverse impact on her career. In retrospect, she was
a prophet and
needs to be commended. You are in a similar position and naturally the
powerful and those who do
not seek the truth will challenge you, including those who are defensive about
the Catholic church
(notice the silence of many cyberGoan Catholics).

May justice prevail.

Regards,
George

India tidal wave toll tops 1,000

Massive tidal waves triggered by an Indonesian
earthquake slammed into southern India, killing about
1,000 people, mostly in Tamil Nadu state, sweeping
away boats, homes and vehicles, says said Home
Minister
Shivraj Patil.
He said on a private television network, Aaj Tak, that
the worst affected area was Tamil Nadu state, where
700-800 people were reported to have died, followed by
Andhra Pradesh state where the toll was about 200.
Another 14 people died in Kerala state and 14 in
Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Tamil Nadu's beaches turned into virtual open-air
mortuaries as fishermen's bodies washed ashore, and
retreating waters left behind others killed inland. At
least 200 people died in Tamil Nadu's capital Madras
alone, and up to 600 in other districts including
Cuddalore, Patil said.

[Goanet]Paulo's 2 people in 1 sleeper

2004-12-26 Thread graceful
For the price, I find nothing wrong in sharing a 'sleeper' with somebody
else. I needn't be gay to do that; just respect each other's personal
space. The other though-costier, option, deployed by some foreign
tourists, is to block two adjoining 'sleepers' for a single passengers.

I dont see a price of Rs. 750/- as cheap. And what I fail to understand as
to how they can call half a sleeper as a sleeper. They need to tell passengers
upfront that they will have to share a sleeper with a stranger.

The general understanding of a sleeper is the one that is there in the railways.
Each person gets a very comfortable sleeper. Here, once you go up, you cant
even raise your head. When I tried to get in, I couldnt put my head in the
direction of the pillow; it always used to go the other way, and it was
not possible for me to change my side while being in the sleeper itself.
 And it was
completely suffocating with just me on that sleeper. I couldnt even imagine
what would have happened when another person would climb up on that same
sleeper.

I would like to know if they have been permitted legally this '2 people in
1 sleeper' arrangement. If so, I wonder on what basis. I suppose there must
be regulations out there that determine how much space a human being needs.

Samir Kelekar

India tidal wave toll tops 1,000

December 26, 2004 - 9:24PM

submerge the coastal villages.)

Massive tidal waves triggered by an Indonesian

Cuddalore, Patil said.
Sea water flooded the streets of Cuddalore town,
flipping over dozens of cars and leaving some vehicles
perched atop road dividers.
Residents of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh state spoke
of four-metre walls of water slamming into the shore.
AdvertisementAdvertisement
I was shocked to see innumerable fishing boats flying
on the shoulder of the waves, going back and forth
into the sea, as if made of paper, said P
Ramanamurthy, 40, who lives in Andra Pradesh's
Kakinada town.
Many boats were upturned, but fishermen were still
holding onto them. They also were pushed into the
sea, he said. I had never imagined anything like
this could happen.
Also, 46 people were killed in three districts of
neighbouring Andhra Pradesh state, police said. They
said 32 of them - including 15 children - had gone
into the sea for a Hindu religious bath to mark the
full moon day.
Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu states are on India's
southeastern coast along the Bay of Bengal, hundreds
of kilometres from Indonesia, where a magnitude 8.9
earthquake struck.
Two people were killed and 100 injured in Port Blair,
the capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a remote
and sparsely populated archipelago in the Bay of
Bengal about 1,500 kilometres east of Madras.

Re: [Goanet]Revoke Paulo Travel's bus permit (for publications)

2004-12-26 Thread Frederick Noronha(FN)
On Sat, 25 Dec 2004 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
This is to relate my experiences of Paulo Travels. I booked a sleeper
ticket to travel from Paulo Travels bus on the 12 th of this month from
Bangalore to Margao.
The ticket was booked well in advance by paying Rs. 750/-. On arrival
at the appointed time at the bus, I found that my ticket number 26 A was
also allocated to someone else. Besides, the sleeper number 26 was
divided into two sleepers 26A and 26 B. It was not just impossible to
climb into the sleeper but I cannot fathom how two people can share the
same sleeper, unless they are a husband wife couple or gays/lesbians.
Who gave Paulo Travels permit for such an arrangement?

The bus was of course full and all people mostly tourists put up with
the arrangement. Paulo Travels bus seems only good for pigs to travel
in, not human beings.

I demand that Paulo Travel's licence be immediately revoked. This is
also to let fore-warn Goans what happens if you book your ticket by this
Paulo Travels.
I have been a long-time traveller with Paulo Travels, and have had a mixed
experience with this service. But disagree with some of what Samir says.

Paulo runs a fleet of buses, and seems to be quite alert to market needs
(unlike our state-run Kadamba Transport Corporation, which is dominated by
a mix of political interest, corruption in body-building and other deals,
and a significant degree of lethargy.

Some years back, Paulo used to be my favoured mode of transport, specially
to destinations like Bangalore, Hyderabad or Pune. It does have some
serious flaws too: (i) drivers sometimes tend to be either too speedy (as
seen by two ghastly accidents over two days earlier this season, then
sought to be justified by Paulo) (ii) buses tend to take long breaks for
dinner and drive casually sometimes, leading the buses to reach their
destination late in the morning, after getting caught up the peak-morning
traffic jams. I know these two statements might seem as contradictory; but
any passenger would like to reach destination more or less on time; not
meet with an accident due to a speeding bus, or reach 4 hours late.
Specially if one has work to attend on the morning of landing.

Paulo has a good system of booking your return fare, without charging you
extra for the phone call. This is particularly suited for those wanting to
make short trips.

Paulo also tends to give Rs 50 discounts to regular travellers; one wishes
they would plough back this money into a better service rather than
cutting corners. One also dislikes the plastic-bottle of water they give
to every passenger; can't we be more environment friendly?

To reach Bangalore, I found the KSRTC bus crew less friendly and informal,
but more business-like and punctual. Hence if one needs to reach on time,
one would prefer this service to both Paulo and KTC.

On one trip, I witnessed a rather strange experience. Some young tourists
were begging the driver to stop for a short 'roadside toilet' halt. Their
pleas turned more and more desperate. All that the bus crew did was to
refuse to stop, and curse the guys (young, South Indian male tourists) for
coming to Goa just to drink.

Anyway, having said the above, I don't quite agree with Samir's reading.
Also, it needs to be said that the sudden campaign against sleeper-buses
in the early phases of Parrikar's regime was ill-founded and seemed
targeted at Paulo, the main player in this sector at that time.

'Sleeper' buses are loved by some people, and hated by others. It gives me
a restful night's sleep at a good price; but I know many others who
dislike the idea very strongly.

Overbooking, specially in the peak season, does tend to happen, and this
is one front where Paulo's could surely buck up. My experience has however
been that the staff tends to be accomodative, realising that the error is
on their side, and sort out the issue by making a request to the
passengers.

For the price, I find nothing wrong in sharing a 'sleeper' with somebody
else. I needn't be gay to do that; just respect each other's personal
space. The other though-costier, option, deployed by some foreign
tourists, is to block two adjoining 'sleepers' for a single passengers.

Bus operators in these parts generally try to avoid trouble by
accomodating same-gender passengers on adjoining seats/sleepers.

That said, it needs to be noted that Paulo's (and other buses') sleepers
can be a tight-fit. You could be in trouble even if you're tall just by
Indian standards ;-)

At the end of the day, we need to note the lack of travel options in these
parts. Between the Rs 400-600 bus ride and the Rs 3000-5000 plane fare,
there are few options. The Swedish-technology Volvo priced approx Rs 550
to 750 for the Goa to Bombay or Bangalore route offers some option; but
not much.

Sometime back, I had made a comment about the problems about getting into
and out of a tourist destination like Goa. Ben Antao, in his

[Goanet]An interesting read so true!

2004-12-26 Thread jerry fernandes
Hello Goanetters
Received this from a friend, and wanted to share with you all
An interesting read so true!
George Carlin was an American comedian of the 70's and 80's. He was known to
be a little foul-mouthed and it is fascinating that after the death of his
wife and 9-11 he would write the following.

A wonderful Message by George Carlin:

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but
shorter tempers, wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but
have less; we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller
families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less
sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems,
more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little,
drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too
little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom. We have multiplied our
possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and
hate too often.

We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to
life not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but
have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbour. We conquered outer
space but not inner space. We've done larger things, but not better things.

We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We've conquered the atom,
but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but
accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more
computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we
communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small
character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of
two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are
days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night
stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to
quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and
nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to
you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just
hit delete. Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by
the moments that take our breath away.

HOW TO STAY YOUNG
1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let
the doctor worry about them. That is why you pay him/her.

2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.
3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening,
whatever. Never let the brain idle. An idle mind is the devil's workshop.
And the devil's name is Alzheimer's.

4. Enjoy the simple things.
5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.
6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person who is
with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.

7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it's family, pets,
keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.

8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable,
improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

9. Don't take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, to the next county, to a
foreign country, but NOT to where the guilt is.

10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.
AND ALWAYS REMEMBER: Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take,
but by the moments that take our breath away. If you don't send this to at
least 8 peoplewho cares? George Carlin

cheers

[Goanet]SCIDEV.NET: India's first communications satellite being transported on a bullock cart

2004-12-26 Thread Frederick Noronha (FN)
India's first communications satellite being transported on a bullock cart
K. S. Jayaraman
17 November 2004
Source: SciDev.Net
[NEW DELHI] Because it breeds deep inside forests, /Anopheles dirus/, a
deadly species of malaria-carrying mosquito had been evading detection by
regular ground surveys. So Aruna Srivastava and her colleagues at the
Malaria Research Centre in New Delhi devised another approach to find them.
Using images from India's remote sensing (IRS) satellites they mapped areas
across the entire country where the species is likely to be found on the
basis of its known behaviour and on ecological factors -- such as
temperature, humidity and altitude -- conducive for its breeding and
survival. Their model correctly predicted the exact breeding locations,
which could then be selectively targeted for specific control measures.
Srivastava's study found that an estimated 50 million inhabitants were being
exposed to this dangerous mosquito whose presence was in some cases unknown
to health authorities until the satellite-aided study.
The technique used by Srivastava -- overlaying geographical and other
ground-based data on satellite derived maps to generate value added products
-- is the basis of a growing industry made possible by the Indian Space
Research Organization (ISRO) in Bangalore.

Hyderabad's new map

Until today, there had been no map of Hyderabad despite it being called a
high-tech city, says Pavuluri Subba Rao, who left ISRO in the 1980s to
found a company that turns the IRS imagery into a wide range of products
with a myriad of applications. Next month he will present the mayor of
Hyderabad with the first map of the city (see photo) showing every piece of
property on every street -- houses, schools hospitals, gas stations and even
burial grounds.
I anticipate two immediate benefits, Rao told SciDev.Net. With every
property digitised, the tax collection will go up. And I expect traffic
congestion to ease because the map clearly shows where to build roads and
flyovers.
Rao says demand for the map is high from those wanting to do business in
Hyderabad. Under a World Bank project, Rao's Hyderabad-based company --
Indian Resources Information and Management Technologies Limited -- is also
preparing maps to show where industries should be allowed in the state's 18
districts in order to minimise impacts of pollution.
This information will be web-enabled, so an industrialist just has to
browse the website to choose the location to build their plant, says Rao.
Today, ISRO's constellation of six IRS satellites -- two more will be added
next year is the world's biggest. Sale of its images worldwide generates
US$6 million in revenue to Antrix Corporation, ISRO's commercial arm.
Within India, scientists have used the satellite pictures to combat
deforestation, monitor desertification, predict crop yields, and even trace
the course of an underground river in northwest India that some scientists
say could be used to irrigate the Thar desert in Rajasthan. Satellites could
also be used to assess how sedimentations reduce the storage capacity of
reservoirs, affecting power generation.
According to ISRO, one major success has been the four to five-fold increase
in fish catch as a result of daily forecasts for fishing zones based on
ocean colour and sea surface temperature obtained from the 'Oceansat'
satellite that ISRO launched in 1999.
A satellite-aided drinking water project has been extended nationwide
following 90 per cent success among the 24,000 wells drilled so far. This
is the first time anywhere in the world where satellite images on a massive
scale, in conjunction with limited field surveys, are being used to locate
groundwater with high level of accuracy, says Dasika Prasad Rao, former
director of the National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA) in Hyderabad.
Producing a map of potential wells costs about Rs. 2,000 (US$45) for each
village, says P.R. Reddy of NRSA who runs this mission.
Vasundhara Raje, a former minister of state for space revealed in 2003 that
the benefit from remote sensing had more than paid for the entire national
space effort. More vital roles are envisaged for the IRS satellites in a
proposed multi-million dollar project on linking India's rivers to solve the
water crisis.
The remote sensing capability will get a further boost next year with the
addition of two new satellites: Cartosat (with a spatial resolution of 2.5m)
and Risat (that can see through clouds).
The results of four decades of efforts are quite impressive in other areas
too. With more than 130 telephone exchanges in orbit, the Indian National
Satellite (INSAT) system is one of the largest domestic communications
systems in the Asia Pacific region. Thanks to INSAT, 90 per cent of Indians
can watch television. Daily weather forecasts and disaster warnings are
possible. And with production lines for two types of operational rockets,
India is also carving a place in

Hi Jerry,
Like it or not, if Goa's going to have a 4-Lane Highway, Pollem will have
its fair share!
Pollem, in Canacona happens to be the southernmost vaddo/wada in Goa through
which the present national highway NH-17 passes through. The government
plans to upgrade this highway from 2-lane to 4-lane. Pollem is also where we
have the check post before crossing into Karnataka.
Pollem is a tiny 'not-so-famous' hamlet because it hardly has any
'touristic' interests. It's more popularly known by Karwaris who hop across
the border for a quick drink and the many bars that have come up in Pollem
due to the price differences of alcohol in Goa and Karnataka.
The next time you search for a place, don't ask Lonely Planet, ask a local.

Tsunami hits south India; over 1,000 dead

Last Updated: December 26, 2004 15:29 IST

Tidal waves killed over a thousand people in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and the
Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Home Minister Shivraj Patil said on Sunday.

Tamil Nadu was the worst affected, with possibly over 800 people killed,
Patil said after a meeting of the Crisis Management Group in New Delhi.

In Andhra Pradesh, over 200 people were feared killed, he said.

In Andaman, as many as 14 people were killed, the minister said, adding that
the damage due to the tidal wave in Car Nicobar and Greater Andamans was
higher, but details were yet to come in due to snapping of communication
links.

Patil said that the coastal areas of West Bengal had also suffered damage, but
he had not been able to contact Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya.

He said he would visit the affected areas either in the evening or Monday
morning.

Patil said thousands of people were evacuated from the affected areas. He said
the priority was to provide food, medicines and blankets to the victims.

Authorities in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh were carrying out relief and
rescue operation on a war footing, the minister said.

The Centre, he said, was doing everything to mitigate the suffering of the
people.

The tidal waves were triggered by a massive earthquake -- 8.5 on the Richter
scale -- that hit the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

That was followed by at least six moderate to strong aftershocks.

Flash flooding in Indonesia claimed almost 100 lives, and many more deaths were
feared in Thailand after huge waves hit the tourist resort of Phuket. The Thai
government declared a state of emergency.

Six deaths were reported from Malaysia's Penang island.

Sri Lankan authorities reported 500 deaths from the waves.

Witnesses in the eastern Sri Lankan port city of Trincomalee reported waves as
high as 40 feet, hitting inland as far as a kilometre.

The Lankan government declared a state of emergency.

[Goanet]CHICKEN AND OUR CULTURE!

2004-12-26 Thread domnic fernandes
Chickens are domestic (farm) birds. They are one of the earliest
domesticated fowl dating back to around 8000 years. The domestic fowl bred
is believed to have been developed from the “kuva-kombi” (red jungle fowl)
which is still seen in jungles, at large ponds and by the river banks. The
scientific name of the chicken is “Gallus domesticus” (genus and species.)
The chicken has a long history of domesticity and service to mankind, and
it has been an integral part of Goan household and culture since time
immemorial.

The adult female chicken is called a hen (kombi), the adult male is called a
rooster/cock (kombo,) and the young are called chicks (pilam.) The rooster
is larger and more brightly colored than the hen; it also has a larger
wattle and comb. Roosters make a very loud crowing and can be quite
aggressive. There are many breeds of chicken that are different in size and
color. In the past, breeds were developed to provide plumage for ceremonial
costumes. Chickens always move in a flock and require no labor to control
them.

Here are some of the characteristics of a chicken:
A chicken’s heart beats 280-315 times a minute. A chicken’s body
temperature normally runs at 102o-103o F. A rooster takes 18-20 breaths a
minute; a hen 30-35. There are over 150 varieties of domestic chickens.
Chickens are not capable of sustained flight. It takes a hen 24-26 hours to
lay an egg. Chickens come in an infinite variety of colors and patterns.
Chicken eggs range in color from white to pale brown and other pale colors.
A chicken can have 4 or 5 toes on each foot. Grocery store chickens are 5-8
weeks old. A chicken takes 21 days to hatch eggs. An egg starts growing
into a chick when it reaches a temperature of 86o F. It takes approximately
4 lbs of feed to make 1 dozen eggs. A hen lives an average of 5-7 years,
but can live up to 20 years. She will lay eggs her entire life with
production decreasing every year from year one.

In the olden days, every family in Goa, no matter how poor it was – cooked
extra food just in case visitors dropped by. Even if nobody arrived, the
food wouldn’t go to waste; it would be shared with their dogs, cats, pigs
and chickens. Chickens have a varied diet. They eat insects, worms,
fruit, seeds, acorns, grains, slugs, snails, and many other foods. They
have a well-developed gizzard (a part of the stomach that contains tiny
stones) that grinds up their food. Since Goans are basically farmers, there
is never a shortage of grains in their barns.

Until my mother passed away, we always raised chickens at our place. We
never ran short of eggs in our house. Also, we always had an old chicken or
two or a rooster which we could slaughter in case relatives/guests arrived
at our place at night.

Every night, once all the chicken were let in the “kombiancho ghudd”
(chicken room,) we were required to count them because if they were left out
perching on a tree, a “kattanor” (wild cat) would devour them. If all
chickens could not be accommodated in a ghudd, they would be assembled in a
room and covered with a “panz” (a large basket made of bamboo with small
window openings.) A large “munkutto” (wooden log) would be placed on the
top of the panz so that the chickens could not escape from it.

Every time our mother went to Mapusa for shopping, we ran into a problem.
By the time she returned home late in the evening, one of the best

INTRODUCTION
The village of Sanquelim (Casabe de Sanquelim) is a part of the Bicholim Taluka
in Goa, covering an area of 45.10 hectares and a total area of 1069.93 hectares
along with Arvalem and Virdi coming under a single panchayat jurisdiction. Of
the total population of 84,532 in Bicholim taluka [1991 census], 82.5 % are
Hindus, 4.9 % are Muslims, 2.42 % are Christians and the rest (0.20 per cent)
belong to other faiths.

Although the Christians comprise a miniscule percentage of the total population
in the taluka, under the aegis of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman and the two
parishes of Bicholim and Sanquelim it has played a pivotal role in social
development of the community. The Sanquelim parish is one of the two parishes
in Bicholim Taluka with the Church dedicated to St. John and the Cross. The
Christian population constituted just 7.39% of the population in the panchayat
jurisdiction of Sanquelim, Harvalem and Virdi in 1992 (Directory, 1992).

THE CHURCH THEN

The church dedicated to St. John of the cross was built as a chapel in 1826 at
the initiative of Archbishop Frei Manoel de S Galdino from the donations raised
by the faithful and the Portuguese Government (Catao 1955). In the subsequent
year i.e. on 11.12.1827, the chapel was detached from the parish of Bicholim
and upgraded as a distinct and separate parish. For a major part of period,
this church has been looked after by the Jesuits. The church was rebuilt on two
earlier occasions namely in 1933 and in 1948.

 THE CHURCH NOW

At present the parish is under the charge of the Redemptorists (The
congregation of the most Holy Redeemer) with Fr. James D’ Costa as the Parish
Priest. The church today, boasts of various vibrant institutions / associations
and religions orders that are deeply associated with it and which carry on its
mission of service. The congregation of the sisters of St. Anne of Divine
Providence renders yeoman service in the social sphere of the village. Since
their entry into the village way back in 1964, there has been no looking back.
Their pioneering work in the small scale industry with activities like chalk
making, candle making and macaroni making kept many a home fires burning. The
primary school for girls, typewriting and shorthand institute for the youth and
the dispensary for the poor and needy are ably run by the sisters who besides
this lend their helping hand in the varied activities of the church. Truly, the
seeds of service to humanity sowed in Tusia Italy in 1834 have bloomed
 all around Sanquelim.

The Confraria do Santissimo Sacramento e Nossa Senhora dos Milagres is a
committee of the parishioners which helps the Parish Priest in running the day-
to-day affairs of the church.

The church runs and manages a school ( St. John of the Cross Primary/High
School) which has carved a niche for itself in the academic field. Some of the
teachers themselves are proud ex-students of the school. Besides, many an ex-
student holds very high positions in the government and the private sectors.

The socio-economic development of Sanquelim in the recent past has attracted
many people including Christians in Sanquelim. An increase in the size of the
Christian population and normal weakening of the church structure due to
ravages of time had made the task of rebuilding the church urgent and
necessary. This task had to be carried out with surgical precision so as not to
destroy the historical importance of the old structure. In view of this, the
front façade (Baroque) has been left untouched so as to preserve this aesthetic
structure of historical importance for posterity.

 THE FUTURE STEPS …

19th December 2004 is a day of joy and rejoicing for all Sankhalikars. It is a
day on which His Grace Archbishop Patriarch Filipe Neri Ferrao will bless the
newly renovated church. It is a happy coincidence that it is also the
liberation day of Goa . Let us the Christians of Sanquelim put into practice
the teachings of St. John of the Cross. Let us join hands with people of other
communities to make Sanquelim a jewel in our beautiful land. Let us resolve to
maintain our age-old communal harmony in this famous spiritual place by
spreading the tapestry of love. More specifically, let us as fellow pilgrims

Dear Goanetters,

I am referring to the statement made by Tourism Minister Mathany at Dempe
College a couple of days ago regarding education and learning. He rightly
stated that merely having a valid certificate does not mean that a person is
educated. A person who has obtained a certificate after passing the necessary
exams can be said to be learned, but is he or she educated ? True education
should have ethics as its foundation.

In the same vein I could say that so much is said that we have an IITian as a
CM. Even eminent persons speak of him as IIT educated CM. I think they should
say IIT learned CM. For I fail to see much education in his manner of acting.
He goes about like a spoilt college brat giving in to his whims and fancies
while using our hard earned money. Nandkumar Kamat praised him to the skies on
his birthday and equated him to Gandhiji, the father of our nation. A
comparison of a pigmy hearted Parikkar with a colossus of a Gandhi who spread
the message of love and peace and united India and died at the hands of a
communal fanatic! The CM wants to live with the bollywood stars and not with
the poor of Goa live along India. His RSS heart is seeking to destroy and not
to build. Look at the destruction of the Fontainhas street vandalism, the
attack on the Bishop's house, the blackening of a professor's face in the
university, the attack on the hotel of Mathew Braganca at Mapusa, the
destruction of the ice factory for an IFFI road, and lately the destruction of
the young minds of innocent children with a falsehood and communal hatred
through a CD , using the official machinery of the state of Goa. Can such a
rakshas be a gandhian ? Has Nandkumar Kamat lost his bearings in the university
lab?or has he received some nice slab for himself to trumpet the pigmy CM's
tantrums?

Headline: Blitz on Indian cyber-cafe porn
Source: BBC News. 24 Dec. 2004 at
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/4124121.stm

Full text :
North Indian police have cracked down on porn in cyber-cafes, including two
that allegedly rented cubicles for $1.30 an hour for youths to have sex.

Police in Uttar Pradesh arrested more than 50 people, some of them naked.
Director-general of police, VKB Nair, told the BBC he ordered the drive
after complaints that students were watching porn instead of attending
classes.

It follows a scandal over the case of a Delhi schoolboy who allegedly filmed
a sex act with a girl on his cell phone.

The BBC's Ram Dutt Tripathi in Lucknow says the Uttar Pradesh crackdown
targeted a number of places that sold pornographic films and videos.

In Agra, the owners of two cyber-cafes were allegedly providing sex cubicles
for boys and girls for 60 rupees ($1.30) an hour.

Most of the cubicles did not even have computers - instead police found used
condoms.

Police arrested 22 boys and girls there, in various states of undress.
The manager of one reputable cyber-cafe said he was surprised that his
establishment was virtually deserted while the others were crowded despite
being almost twice as expensive.

Mr Nair also said some cinema halls were caught illegally showing parts of
films that were cut by the censors.

He has asked all district police chiefs to file reports on the crackdown by
29 December.

Allahabad district police chief, Sunil Gupta, said two people had been
arrested there for selling pornographic video CDs.

However, he denied media reports that police had received a video CD
allegedly made by a boy of a sex act with his girlfriend which was then sold
in markets for 250 rupees.

In a similar case, which has shocked India, a 17-year-old Delhi schoolboy
allegedly recorded a sex act with a girl, 16, on his mobile phone.

The clip was later sold on video CDs via auction site Baazee.com, sparking
the arrest of its manager for India, Avnish Bajaj.

A juvenile court granted the boy bail but ordered him not to leave the
country.

Mr Bajaj was also bailed and told not to leave.
He was arrested under India's information technology law, which prohibits
the use of the internet to distribute obscene or pornographic material.

Bazee.com has said the offending clip was removed from the website as soon
as the nature of its contents became known.

The alleged seller of the two minutes and 37 seconds clip, an engineering
student, has also been arrested

[Goanet]Re: Seminar, Nov 2004 issue *Amchem Goem* (IFFI related extracts - I)

2004-12-26 Thread Philip Thomas
This is an attempt to cull out some quotes from the Seminar Issue on Goa to
see if we can get some useful background from it on the IFFI initiative of
the government.

FOUR decades after Liberation, Goa stands acclaimed as being among the best
developed states in the country. It has been described as one of India's ten
most global non-corporate brands, second only to the Indian film industry
and Bangalore's Silicon Valley .. Yet public perception across the European
world and in the imagination of many others has linked Goa in the last three
decades with Kathmandu, Bali and Ibiza. Goans battle environmental
pollution, drug traffic and paedophilia...The Goan experience of colonialism
and decolonization sets it apart, making problematic its harmonious
integration into national life .. In subsequent decades, tourism has also
contributed to mobility in ways that have not been matched in other parts of
the country. [The Problem, Maria Aurora Couto]

Soscgado, blissful ease, as a popular description of Goan character, appears
to contradict the competitive performance of the Goan economy. It does,
however, indicate that Goa's economic strengths derive from sources outside
narrow definitions. .. Credit, however, must be given to the professional
analysts for relying on criteria that gave greater regard to education,
health, governance and infrastructure. It is in this wider context that Goa
with an area of 3702 sq kms, the smallest state after Delhi, has attained
benchmarks of human development that have made its economy among the best
performing in the country...Though Goa entered the Union framework only in
the middle of the Third Five Year Plan (1962-1966), the situation was more
than made up by liberal funding and decisiveness of the Planning Commission
and the Central government...Another milestone was reached in 1983 when
Prime Minister Indira Gandhi held the Retreat of the Commonwealth Heads of
Government in Goa. Significant and productive investments were made for
roads, telecommunications, water supply, electricity transmission and
distribution, the international airport terminal, and by the private sector
for hotels and tourist attractions of Goa's unrivalled beaches of sun, sand,
fronting calm seas and fringed by sand dunes and coconut palms. It also
served as a demonstration of the joy of the Goan way of life - its cuisine,
song and music and social harmony - an object lesson to some of the
Commonwealth Heads uneasy about the military action of 1961...The financial
resources to meet the challenges of development need a fresh look. A
provision of central assistance on a formula based only on an increase in
population and poverty penalizes states for performance. For Goa the
reduction in central assistance from an average of 80% of the state plan
outlay during the union territory period to the current 15% has led to
increased borrowings, raising the dangers of a debt trap...Goa has much to
show in the management of its resources. Not only is the per capita income
the highest in the country but so also is the per capita realization of
state revenue mainly from sales tax, water and electricity charges. The
state budget estimates for 2004-2005 and the revised estimates for 2003-2004
provide for substantial funding for further initiatives in employment,
agriculture, infrastructure and social welfare. The revenue expenditure is
estimated at Rs 1584 crore and capital expenditure at Rs 597 crore, with a
plan outlay of Rs 915 crore. Both the revenue deficit of Rs 7.95 crore and
the fiscal deficit of Rs 506 crore are manageable. Evidently there is a case
for enlarged central assistance that rewards performance and efficient
management of the economy...In Goa, the foreign exchange earned from the
export of iron ore of 23.5 million tonnes, was Rs 1200 crore, an all time
high for fiscal 2002-2003; the foreign exchange from tourism in Goa is
estimated at Rs 1500 crore during an average year and is expected to go up
to Rs 2000 crore in 2004-2005. Only two percent of the royalty charges for
mining and nothing for the foreign exchange earned from exports of Goan ore
and tourism is received from the central government...There is need to
revise the interest rate on Central loans, especially since external
assistance on very low interest and other concessional terms is given by
international funding agencies and bilateral donor countries. Such
assistance is usually given for social sector projects like water supply,
sanitation and rural development. Even if the foreign exchange is not passed
on to the state governments, the rupee loan for such projects should be on
low interest and long repayment periods [The Goan Economy. Alban Couto]

There is much talk about Goa being one of the preferred tourist
destinations. I do not subscribe to this view for a very good reason.
Infrastructure is lacking. This is because neither the central nor state
governments have introduced a 'hands on' tourism policy in India, even

ONE aspect of the 9-11 commission is to give legitimacy to the USA's
neocolonization ambitions in the Middle East and indirectly bless its
anti-Arab, anti-Muslim views. A recent poll in the USA suggested that
American Muslim rights should be curtailed. It is race, religious bigotry,
etc. all rolled into one big unjust mess.

And yes, the 9-11 would have greater credibility if it had dark-skinned
people on the panel - like a few people from the Middle East who are
scholars there and can offer a better perspective and some former Governor
or Senator from the USA. [George Pinto on Dec 25]

The 9/11 Report took nearly two years to finalise. It reportedly involved
the review of 2.5 million pages of documents, interviews of 1200 individuals
in TEN COUNTRIES (emhasis added). It explicitly sought to to be independent
impartial, thorough and non-partisan. It was committed to share its
investigations to the maximum extent with the American people. For this
purpose it held 19 days of hearings and took public testimony from 160
witnesses. Some of this was available on satellite TV in India.

The Commissions staff includes one of Indian origin (Rajesh De, Counsel) and
may be two if Charles M. Pereira (Professional Staff Member) is also
counted. There is also a Korean (Hyon Kim, Counsel).

Appendix B is titled Table of names and consists of nearly 5 (five) pages
of individuals with Arabic/Muslim names compared to 2 (two) of U.S Officials
including Condoleeza Rice and Zalmay Khalilzad.

So what exactly is your complaint about the lack of credibility of the 9/11
Commission's work? Instead you may be the one who seems to be labouring
under some vague, preconceived notions in this matter.

2004-12-26 Thread Philip Thomas
The quotes are accurate but I cannot believe them literally any more than I
can believe in Santa Claus today. It would be nice, but it ain't just true.
I do not expect the 9-11 commission to come out and say Islamic terrorism
(which is the more popular term used in the USA), a message sent out by the
Bush administration and media. It is NOT IslamIST terrorism which I believe
is
paying lip-service and being politically correct.

I am not saying everyone in the USA is anti-Muslim (there are 6 million
American Muslims) but I believe the 9-11 commission blessed the status quo
on a number of fronts: the belief that America is innocent in terrorism
matters, the bad guys are always the other guys, the roots of terrorism is
external to the USA and non-white in nature, capitalism is kind and gentle
and that's what the
Middle East needs, America's national security is at stake (translation:
control of Middle East oil), etc.

Hence, I am very apprenhensive about the 9-11 commission's report. [George
Pinto on Dec 25]

You may well be right but why should we take your word for it? Where is the
evidence? Specifically, what are you apprehensive about?

Btw, I checked amazon.com for information about the 9/11 Report and found
an account of a book (by a Professor Griffin) which has critiqued it
heavily.
Reviews of the Griffin book, however, do not mention any of the issues you
have raised in the second para of your posting. These were probably simply
irrelevant to the 9/11 Commission's brief or TOR!

I also went back to the 9/11 Report to check on its take on Bin Laden's
views on Islam and America. I have concluded that your views would probably
come perilously close to the jihadist theme that portrays the United States
as anti-Muslim (p. 375), as the Report puts it, and hence there may be
reason for one to feel slightly apprehensive about your intentions vis a vis
Americans! Hope we will be disabused of this line of thinking in due course

Bhopal: In a significant development , the All India Muslim Tehwar Committee
(AIMTC), comprising of Ulema and representatives of over 100 Muslim
organizations, on Friday declared Zaheera Sheikh, a witness in the Best
Bakery case, as a munafiq (hypocrite) and excommunicated her.

The decision was taken at the emergency meeting of the Muslim religious
scholars, convened in Bhopal on Friday.

The Majlis-e-Shoora (advisory council) of AIMTC unanimously decided that in
view of the Tehelka expose, it had been confirmed that Zaheera had been
lying again and again.

COMMENTS:
I personally congratulate the AIMTC and the Muslim faith at large for this
singular action. This is the need of the hour where religions of the world
seem to be the carpets under which a lot of dirt (read hypocrites) is
hiding.

I wish the Catholic Church in particular and the Hindu Samaj at large would
have in place such a committee as AIMTC, specially in Goa, wherein if
'munafiqs' were to be excommunicated, we would have only the 'good
intentioned' citizens around and 'NO POLITICIANS' to soil the sacred places
where GODs live, on SUNDAYs and every conceivable opportune day.

Wouldn't that be what we really want???

George Pinto wrote,

Aires

I believe you wrote at least once there are other cases of sexual abuse by
the clergy in Goa. I had written to the Archdiocese twice and did not get a
response. Is there a formal study done in Goa regarding this issue? I hope
the Goa church is not turning a blind eye or burying their head in the
sands. In the USA, we witnessed the tremendous harm done to the victims and
innocent priests two years with a similar scandal. The Church's silence and
denial finally took the issue to the courts and matters are now settled with
huge monetary sums - some of it could have been avoided. Just today,
another settlement here in California.

I hope the Goa Church is not going down the same path. I notice very few are
asking for transparency and a public report. This way everyone can avoid
speculation and gossip. When the Church sex abuse scandal first broke in the
USA, innocent priests were walking around convicted by association simply
by being a priest. It is not fair to the priests or the victims. I am hoping
there is formal investigation and study in Goa and the findings made public.
The laity have a right to know if the problem is pervasive or isolated or
non-existent.

Dear George,

After the details of the Ribandar Church molestation case were made public
I have received a lot of written and oral complaints about grave sexual and
financial improprieties going on in other Parishes across Goa. I requested
that all these complaints be sent directly to the Archbishop's palace.

As you now the Church is very powerful and unresponsive to the people's
pulse.
Till date instead of attempting to fix the problem the Church seems to do
everything possible to cover its unholy acts. And for this they shrewdly use
the services of a cotorie of some wise lay people that evolves around the
Church to do the dirty job of damage control.

Early this year I personally met the Archbishop Rev. Filipe Neri Ferrao and
pleaded his intervention on the Ribandar issue. The spokesman of the
Archbishop made a public statement a few days later that the Archbishop was
seized of the matter and that an inquiry had been ordered.

That's all we have heard. Till date the findings of this inquiry have not
been made public. And the not so suprising silence and inaction on the part
of the Archbishop is solely to be blamed for allowing this issue to be
dragged into the Courts and public domain.

Turning a blind eye is no solution to a serious problem. It only aggravates
the issue and this is exactly what is happening in the Ribandar Church
molestation case where on Dec 24th last year before the X'mas midnight mass
Parish priest Fr. Newton Rodrigues is accused of allegedly taking a
13-year-old Ribandar girl to a room in the church on the pretext of taking
confession and molesting her.
