AMFA asks AIFF for video of Manipur-Goa match

The Imphal Free Press

IMPHAL, Nov 22: For taking up further action in connection with the
controversial umpiring decision in the November 17 match between
Manipur and Goa, which resulted in the state`s ouster from the Santosh
Trophy, the All Manipur Football Association has asked the All India
Football Federation to make available to it the unedited video tapes
of the match.

This was disclosed to mediapersons by the AMFA hony. secretary, L
Ranjit Roy this afternoon following an emergency meeting of the AMFA"s
executive body.

Informing mediapersons of the decisions taken at the executive
meeting, Roy said as the tournament organising committee had upheld
the controversial decision on the basis of video clippings of the
match, match commissioner`s report and the referee instructor`s
report, it was decided to ask the AIFF to make available the unedited
video tapes of the match at the earliest. A letter has been sent to
the AIFF accordingly, he added.

As the unedited video tapes would show the position of each player at
the time the match was restarted by referee Saji Kouriyan, they would
be vital evidence when the AMFA brings the matter before the appeals
committee, he stated.

It may be mentioned that the referee allowed Goa to restart the game
even as most of the Manipur players were celebrating W Tomba`s
brilliant goal in the 88th minute and an equalizer was scored by Goa`s
Climax Laurence even before the applause for Tomba`s goal subsided.

Manipur needed a win to qualify for the semifinals, as Goa had a
better goal average.

The lack of clarity in the telecast of the match by Zee Sports
regarding the incident has only heightened the resentment felt by the
public, Roy observed. In order to bring down the public discontent,
Zee Sports should make available the unedited video clippings to the
concerned authorities without any bias.

With regard to the AMFA decision to boycott the forthcoming under-19
and under-14 football tournaments to be organised by the AIFF, the
AMFA secretary said that though the AIFF has asked the state body to
reconsider its decision, there was no point in discussing the AIFF
request as yet. The AMFA has decided at today`s executive meeting that
the matter should only be taken up after the confusion felt by the
public over the present controversy is cleared up, he said.
