UKvisas supporting the Prime Minister's Initiative for International Education. (19/04/06)

International education provides the UK with a dynamic, high-skill and sustainable export industry that has been estimated to be worth more than £10bn. But it also enriches our society in many ways. The relationships that we develop often provide the potential for greater educational, cultural and scientific exchange, as well as greater trade, investment, and political dialogue.

The first Prime Minister's Initiative on International Students (PMI), launched in 1999, was highly successful and achieved its targets of attracting more international students to the UK. But we recognise that this was the beginning of a much longer road and that a new strategic direction is now needed – one which addresses a wider internationalisation agenda.

The PMI for International Education is a new 5 year strategy which will build on the success of the first PMI to secure the UK’s position as a leader in international education and sustain the managed growth of UK international education delivered both in the UK and overseas.

The strategy sets out four interconnected strands designed to build on the success of the first PMI:

UK positioning: marketing and communications strategies to position the UK as a leader in international education and to increase the number of international students engaged in UK education
Ensuring the quality of the student experience
Building strategic partnerships and alliances
Priority countries: diversification and consolidation
UKvisas is committed to supporting PMI. We want to use the visa service to encourage and welcome more genuine students to come to UK. Working closely with PMI partners we will actively participate in all four areas of PMI including communication and marketing in priority countries, forming part of the end-to-end quality experience for students, and supporting strategic partnerships.
