to defend its defeat in the Lok Sabha polls held in Goa recently, said Chief
Minister Manohar Parrikar yesterday. (GT)

NO TAKERS FOR IFFI INFO: CM: "None of the NGOs which shouted hoarse over
non-transparency of the government over International Film festival of India
came forward to seek information from Goa State Infrastructure Development
Corporation during the past one week when all files had been kept open for
their perusal," charged Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar yesterday. (GT)

CANDIDATES GET TO SEAL EVMS ROOM: Perhaps for the first time in recent
times, the contesting candidates for the South Goa parliamentary
constituency will now be allowed to put their independent seals on the outer

May 1, four days after all the 555 EVMs (electronic voting machines) from
all the constituencies were locked and sealed inside the strong room. (H)

NEXUS-RAN RACKET IN ILLEGAL CONSTRUCTIONS: In Mapusa, where nearly a third

INEFFICIENCY FORCED REVAMP OF INFO DEPT: CM: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar
stated that the personal clashes by former Director of Information Shivaji
Prabhugaonkar with the department staff and later his medically unfit
condition had compelled the government to appoint an Officer on special Duty
in his place. Stating that the department had become defunct and
non-performing during the past three years, Parrikar also justified the
transfer of Joint Director of Information Menino Peres from the department,
and appointment of Dilip Deshpande as director on deputation. The Chief

PEACOCK: INSPIRATION FOR THE GOAN SOCIETY: When the peacock dances in the
rains, the women transform this dance form into a 'Morulo' and watching this
gives one an illusion that the peacock itself has come down to play the
traditional dance of 'Fugadi'..The peacock has immense importance in the
life of the Goan people and various phrases, idioms and sayings are based on
it in the local language. (Rajendra Kerkar in GT)

GOA: POST-LOK SABHA POLL MUSINGS: It's time for our politicians to cool
their heels after having braved harsh summer and hostile foes at the
hustings. It's also time for introspection and stocktaking. Has Goanness
been stirred violently for the sake of poll gains? Are we regrouping
ourselves on caste and community basis there by resurrecting the pre-1980
scenario and, also the post 1980 situation, wherein personal ambitions and
communal activism got better of reason and common welfare? Is obscurantism
gaining currency again in Goa? Have we vandalized places of worship to
support party politics? And, are we at all growing out of prejudices, inborn
or otherwise? These are some of the questions that not only politicians and
their henchmen but also the common voters would have to ask themselves so
that by the time the EVMs are downloaded on 13th May only to reveal the fate
of the 16 candidates in the f ray, there could be readymade plans to adopt
follow-up matters. (Edit in GT)
