CITY MORCHA TURNS VIOLENT: A police constable was injured while 15 traders
from the city market were arrested by the Panaji police when a morcha by the
vendors took a violent turn outside the Corporation of the City of Panaji
building on April 2 afternoon.Nearly 150 vendors took out a morcha from the
Panaji market to the Corporation office holding placards and shouting
slogans. They were demanding that space for them in the new Corporation
market building be reserved in advance. (GT)

CHURCHILL FILES PAPERS FOR S GOA SEAT: Churchill Alemao was the first
contestant to file his candidature before the South Goa Election Returning
Officer, collector JP Singh on April 2. (GT)

NO CONVICTION: Congress candidate for South Goa Parliamentary constituency,
Churchill Alemao, has stated that he hasn't been convicted for any offence
and consequently has not been sentenced to imprisonment for a year or more.
In the affidavit attached with his nomination paper submitted to the
Returning Officer, he, however, stated that he has been accused in a case of
rioting and unlawful assembly in connection with the Konkani agitation. The
case has not yet been disposed off, he stated. (H)

PARRIKAR RELIES ON SILENT CAMPAIGN: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar unveiled
the BJP election campaign strategies on April 2 and described them as the
"silent and effective" method of reaching out to the masses. Mr Parrikar
addressing the press said, "We are not interested in demonstrating our show
of strength by holding large public meetings but shall be focusing attention
on voters by meeting them personally through our network of workers at the
village and booth level." He disclosed that 91 per cent of booth-wise
campaigning had already been completed and that by April 5 a total of 960
booths will be covered. (H)

WILLY RIDICULES BJP: Nationalist Congress Party's Goa unit Chief, Dr Wilfred
de Souza, said at a press conference, "Before the star (Hema Malini) begins
to tell Goans what the BJP intends to do for them, it would be better if
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and Union Minister of State, Shripad Naik,
take her to the Candolim beach to show her the "River Princess" that lies
rusting in the sea." (H)

COMMON MANIFESTO FOR CONG-NCP: Nationalist Congress Party state president
and North Goa candidate Dr Wilfred de Souza yesterday stated both the state
units of the NCP and Congress Party will soon release a common minimum
programme highlighting the local issues for the coming Lok Sabha elections.

CPI'S FONSECA FILES NOMINATION: Communist Party of India, Goa Unit
secretary, Christopher Fonseca, filed his nomination papers, for the Panjim
Parliamentary Constituency (North Goa) before the Returning Officer in
Panjim on April 2. (H)

OFFICIALS TO BE SWAPPED: For the first time since Goa's liberation, 50 per
cent of the presiding offices from South Goa will be posted in the North Goa
district and the same percentage of presiding officers from North Goa will
be deputed in South Goa in view of directives from the Central Election
Commission. (GT)

TAX HOLIDAY CRUCIAL FOR GOAN INDUSTRY: With the income-tax holiday that
industries in Goa enjoyed over the years coming to an end on March 31,
industry circles fear that if the industrial units in the state are not
given further tax exemptions and sops then the 'number one' state may soon
start losing out industries to other states. (NT)

DOG OWNERS WARNED: If your dog has turned dangerous or unruly, causing
nuisance to the neighbourhood, ensure it is tamed immediately or else run
the risk of the canine being taken away by the authorities. In an
unprecedented order, the Sub-divisional Magistrate, Margao, Dipak Dessai,
has ordered a resident of Belloi-Nuvem to hand over his "unruly" dogs to the
Animal Husbandry department or the Goa Animal Welfare Trust or simply remove
the dogs from the locality by any other means within 7 days. (H)

ONLY TWO PLAN ON IFFI WEBSITE: While the work of dredging River Mandovi on
the city side and construction of new Patto bridge commenced apace, citizens
and NGOs said there were no plans available for the public. The IFFI folder
inaugurated by Information Secretary Jayashree Raghuraman on Thursday is a
mere gimmick meant to fool the public that the government is transparent and
information is available on the website, People's Movement for Civic Action

GOAN YOUTH AVERS TO JOINING DEFENCE SERVICES: Goa is a maritime State and
had maritime traditions from time immemorial. But there is hardly any Goan
recruitment in the Indian Navy as against a sizeable population from the
non-maritime States. Our boys opt for merchant Navy openings as butlers,
stewards and ratings. May be a handful, qualified and career-oriented,
prefer better quality jobs on the ship. There is a welcome trend. The
Shipbuilding Institute at Vasco da Gama is a good springboard for those who

MICHAEL IS SARPANCH OF BETALBATIM: Michael Pereira was unanimously elected
sarpanch of Betalbatim at a special meeting held on April 1. (GT)

TIATR NEEDS FURTHER IMPROVEMENT: The president of the Goa Konkani Akademi,
Mr Pundalik Naik, while addressing the participants of one-day workshop on
'Tiatr Script Writing' said that while tiatr is the most popular dramatic
form of Goa and has developed tremendously in its 112-year history, it still
needs to improve to come on par with other stages of the country. "In order
to achieve this, the tiatr artistes have to first improve the standard of
tiatr scripts, "Mr Naik said. According to a press note, the "Tiatr Script
Writing" workshop was organised by Kala Mogi of Candolim, as part of its
Silver Jubilee celebrations in collaboration with Kala Academy, recently.

"DOWN TO EARTH JAZZ FESTIVAL": To commemorate World Earth Day, at three-day
"Down to Earth Jazz Festival", with an intriguing mix of food, art and
opinion thrown in, is to take place from April 22 to 24 at Campal, Panjim.
Think Geek brings Jazz music to Goa and the event is being co-ordinated by

GU STUDENTS FOR GERMANY: Cedric Araujo, Luther D'Silva and Deborah Pacheco
from the Department of Management Studies, Goa University, have been
selected to undertake a semester in business studies at the Facchhochshule
Ingolstadt (University of applied science), Germany. During their 5-month
stay, they will pursue courses such as international finance, international
contract negotiation and inter-cultural business communication. (H)

GOAN WINS NATIONAL PRIZE: It was a proud moment for Menino Francisco Ferrao,
when he won a consolation prize for photography at the prestigious 16th
National Photo Contest organised by the Photo Division, Ministry of
Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, recently. Ferrao, who
hails from Divar, won the prize and a trophy for his black and white
photograph of Zuari Bridge in the 'India on the move' section. A total of
948 photographs were received for the contest. (GT)
