GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 05 February 2004 PARRIKAR PLEDGES TO IMPLEMENT LANGUAGE ACT: Brushing aside criticism that he is playing a diplomatic game between the Konkani and Marathi camps, the Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar, on February 4 said his government has already created the Official Language Department and added that the Official Language Act would be implemented in right earnest, and in another 2-3 years things will fall in place. CENTRE'S FEEL-GOOD BUG CATCHES STATE: In keeping with the BJP's "feel-good" campaign, the State cabinet on February 4 cleared several important decisions some of which are populist in nature. Voluntary retirement scheme will be re-opened for government employees while college students can hope to get computers. For loanees from the weaker sections of the society and retrenched workers from industrial units, the cabinet has "in principle" decided to waive off interest amount from loans taken. (H) CYBER SCHEME FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS: The government has extended the Cyber Age Student Scheme to college students with immediate effect, announced Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar at a press conference in Panaji on February 4. Students presently studying in first, second and third year of college, besides those enrolled in post graduation courses will be able to avail of the benefit. A slab of payment between Rs.2,000 to Rs.4,000 has been fixed for college students while that for post graduate and engineering students, the slab could be between Rs.8,000 to Rs.10,000, in view of higher end computers. (GT) GOV NOD MUST FOR CLINICS: No doctor will be able to practice medicine or dentistry or set up clinic or hospital in Goa unless he obtains a licence from the government. This is stated in the Goa Medical Practitioners' Bill, 2004, which was approved on February 4 by the cabinet. (H) IT EXHIBITION IN CITY: Every techie's dream came to town with the opening of the first ever Pro Audio and IT.Com exhibition at the Mandovi Riviera, in Panaji, on February 4. The exhibition, which will run till 6 February, features a number of high-profile participants from the IT and audio-visual industries. FEAR OF AVIAN INFLUENZA: Although the State government has declared that Goa is free from the avian influenza or bird flu, as it does not import birds from abroad, sales of chicken have seen a drastic decline with people preferring meat and vegetables. (NT) FIRST ANGIOPLASTY IN GOA: The angiograms and angioplasties in Goa will be performed at the Apollo Victor Hospital, Margao on February 16 by world-renowned interventional cardiologist, Dr Fayaz Shawl. Dr Shawl, currently the director of interventional cardiology at Washington Adventist Hospital, Maryland, USA, will also give a second opinion to the patients, who have already conducted their angiograms or angioplasties. (NT) DOCUMENTATION OF GOAN MUSICIANS (WESTERN): A well-researched Konkani book "Songit, Doulot Goenkaranchi", will be released on February 7, the inaugural day of the Konkani Sangeet Sammelan, in Panjim. The 220-page book in Roman script contains articles by eminent Konkani writers on pioneering musicians Chris Perry and Alfred Rose besides referring to virtually every important Goan musician-past and present. Containing invaluable information and rare photographs of dozens of musicians, the book edited by well-known Konkani novelist Bonaventure D'Pietro and funded partly by Fundacao Oriente-Panjim, covers Goa's western music culture in toto: how Goans came into music, their collaboration with the Parsi musicians, Goans playing for the cine industry during the silent movie era and in the circus arena, for princes and maharajas, for affluent passengers on ocean liners. It also refers to the Goan parochial schools and carries lyrics of some of the ever green hits of Chris and Alfie, to whom D'Pietro, who is also a musician, has dedicated the volume. (GoaNOW) ALL INDIA KONKANI SANGEET SAMMELAN: Renowned musicologist Pandit Bhaskar Chandavarkar will inaugurate the two-day second all-India Konkani Sangeet Sammelan organised by the Goa Konkani Sangeet and Natak Akademi at Alfred Rose Nagar, EDC grounds, Patto, Panaji, at 6 pm on Saturday 7 February. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar will be the chief guest. Akademi president Tomazinho Cardozo said that Bondo, Goa's foremost percussionsit, and his troupe will present the raw tribal energy of Konkani music in a specially composed presentation. A special performance in tribute to the late Aflred Rose and late Chris Perry will reflect on their musical styles. Well-known artistes Lorna, Rita Rose, Alria Rose, H Britton, Anthony San, Rajesh Madgaonkar, Abdonio, Mahesh Sardessai re among those who will perform. The music is arranged by Babush of Mumbai with his ensemble comprising Marshall Rose, Theo Alvares, Alan Moraes, Benny and others. (GT) COP DIES AFTER BEING DENIED 'LEAVE': A pall of gloom descended on the constabulary at the Panjim police station on February 4 after one of their colleagues, Menon Venkatesh Sawant (45) was discovered lying dead in his bed at the barracks. Sawant's colleagues later discovered that his leave application had been rejected by higher-ups. (H) GOAN CONTINGENT FOR TRAVEL EXPO: A big contingent of Goan hoteliers, tour operators and other players from the Tourism sector are participating in the 4-day-long international World Travel India 2004 beginning at the Bandra-Kurla Complex, Mumbai. (NT) KASHINATH MAHALE PASSES AWAY: Renowned educationist, French Scholar and former Vice-Chancellor of Manipur University, Dr Kashinath J Mahale, 79, of Chorao, expired after a brief illness at the GMC on February 4. Dr Mahale was suffering from a viral infection 'Gillian Barys', which affects the nerves. Born on 3 May 1924 at Chorao, Mahale rose to great heights after he had a humble beginning. He was MA in French, LLB and twice PhD in French Literature and Public International Law from Sorbonne, Paris University. He was a fellow in French at Wilson College, Bombay, in 1949 and ended as a Vice-Chancellor of Manipur University after having occupied key teaching positions in several premier educational institutions. He was awarded many a scholarships by Indian and French government and also awarded the knighthood "Chevalier de l'orde des Palmes Academiques" by the Ministry of Education, Government of France, in 1984. (GT) EARLY BOARD EXAMS LIKELY: While the Goa Board of secondary and Higher Secondary Education is conducting examinations for the HSSC and SSC on march 19 and March 24 respectively, the GBSHSE is contemplating on holding Board examination by mid-March from next year.to enable students to prepare and participate in entrance exams conducted for professional courses across the country. (H) VOTERS LIST ON THE DECLINE: Prior to the commencement of the exercise to update the rolls on 17 November 2003, there were in all 9,35,646 voters (4,26,519 in north Goa and 5,09,127 in south Goa). The number of total voters has decreased to 4,21,839 in the North while there is a slight increase-5,09,951 voters in south Goa. The deletion of 28,186 names in both districts is said to be on grounds of the demise of the electors, transfer of some voters due to settling elsewhere for the purpose of employment or marriage or non-residence for long periods of time. (GT) CONVENTION CENTRE: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, said that the proposed convention centre for Goa would become the pride of the State and prove to be an asset during the International Film Festival of Goa besides for other events. In the interim budget, the Finance Minister, Mr Jaswant Singh, made a provision of Rs.1,500 crore for the construction of a ultra-modern convention centre for Goa, along with Rajasthan and Lucknow.
