Addressing the BJP rally at Azad Maidan, Mahajan said the party had performed creditably at the local as well at the national level and assured a still better performance during the next few years. NO MID-TERM POLL IN GOA: Pramod Mahajan, BJP National General Secretary, stated yesterday that Goa would not have a mid-term poll. "No assembly elections will take place in Goa till 2007," Mahajan assured reporters. (GT) UGDP(S) MICKKY IS HERE TO STAY? With Mickky Pacheco doing an eleventh hour turnaround, the UGDP (Secular-Mickky) has now come to stay, (at least for the moment). There would be two representations of the UGDP in the House, one represented by Mathany Saldanha, belonging to the original party and the other by the Tourism Minster, Mickky Pacheco, heading the splinter group. (H) MAHAJAN THREATENS TO 'HIJACK' CM: BJP general secretary Pramod Mahajn almost 'threatened' to hijack Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to the central government, considering the rate of development in the State. Mr Mahajan, however, paused before assuring the crowd at Azad Maidan that such a recourse would be adopted only after 2007. (H) PARRIKAR TENDERS APOLOGY TO HC: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Tuesday tendered an apology to the High Court and expressed "sincere regrets" for the statement made by him allegedly casting aspersions on the judiciary, if it was found objectionable, and maintained that his remarks had not been correctly reproduced by the press. (H) PICKLE BAN LIFTED: Goans in many parts of the globe can now savour the famed Goan pickle with their meals. Air passengers taking Goan pickles to their near and dear ones to distant places should no longer have any problem at the airports across the country in view of the partial modification of the circular issued by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, which has struck off 'pickles' from its list of banned items in hand baggage. (GT) TWO DIE IN FATAL MISHAP: Two persons died (N Ravikumar and his mother-in-law Kurpamana) died in a fatal accident near Bogmalo church at around 1 pm yesterday. Ravikumar lost control of the scooter on the Bogmalo slope and dashed against a road-side tree. His two sons aged 9 and 7, who were also traveling on the scooter, sustained minor injuries. (GT) MAN COMMITS SUICIDE: One Piedade Agnel D'Souza (40), from Karmaliwada-Kakoda, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the shaft of the roof of his house. (GT) LABOURER FOUND DEAD: Laxman Chalwadi (45), a labourer who was reported missing since Saturday, was found dead in a stone quarry at St Pedro, Ribandar. (GT) GOVT TEACHERS UNDER FIRE: Teachers of government schools in the State have come under heavy fire for poor results obtained in the SSC examinations with memos being issued and explanations sought by the Department of Education for the same. (H) WHITE ELEPHANTS: In many remote parts of Sanguem taluka, primary education has become a builder's dream and a student's nightmare. For, a large number of buildings constructed by the government to run primary schools in Sanguem constituency since the 1990s are either lying unused, in a dilapidated condition or are on the verge of collapse. META STRIPS RAINWATER HARVESTING: In a good example of modern rainwater harvesting technique, Meta Strips Ltd, the copper-allow manufacturing facility on the Sancoale-Cortalim plateau, saves upto 7 crore litres of rainwater in two specially built tanks on its grounds. "We not only use the rainwater in our manufacturing process, we keep recycling it over and over again," says Mr Magan Bandodkar, from the Meta Strips' Environment Department. So much so that all residents of Goa would be able to secure instantly, on demand, papers relating to the presumed ownership or title of a land or piece of real estate. Apparently the certificates, which the sub-registrar and the collectorates issue so readily through the information kiosks, which include not only texts but relevant maps, have no legal value.
