This is the first case booked under the provisions of the Goa Coaching Class (Regulations) Act, 2001, and under Rules of the Goa School Regulation Act, 1986. The department has now asked the management of the Dempo Higher Secondary School, Miramar, to initiate disciplinary proceedings against physics teacher Sebastian Marcelo and Mathematics teacher Shriram Athayle by placing them under suspension with immediate effect and to report compliance within five days. (GT) GOA A BASE FOR ULTRAS, SAYS RAW: In a startling revelation, Goa has become a base for at least 30 ultras of the Laskar-e-Toiba and the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen. According to sources at the Research and Analysis Wing of the Government of India and the Intelligence Bureau, both at Delhi and Goa, the ultras of the Laskar-e-Toi and the Mujahideen have made Goa, in particular, North Goa, their home. (H) GOVERNOR CAN SANCTION MINISTER'S PROSECUTION: Sending a clear warning to politicians in power, the Supreme Court, on November 5, ruled that a governor of a state can accord sanction for prosecution of a minister for an illegal act even after the Council of Ministers had refused such permission. This ruling of far-reaching impact against those taking refuge behind government's decision not to accord sanction for their prosecution was given by a five-judge bench comprising Mr Justice N Santosh Hegde, Mr Justice SN Variava, Mr Justice BP Singh, Mr Justice HK Sema and Mr Justice SB Sinha. (PTI report in NT) ILLEGAL SHACKS DEMOLISHED: The Tourism Department demolished four illegal shacks along the Northern coastal belt on November 4. This is part of a continuing drive against illegally erected shacks. (GT) ZANTYE AWAITS RELEASE OF LOAN: "Theatre tycoon", Mr Harish Zantye, told The Navhind Times that the Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, had promised him a loan of Rs.3 crore to refurbish his theatres to host some of the films during the 11-day-long international event, but the promised help is yet to come. He said that the new multiplex, which has four screens, will adversely affect his business interest and if no help comes from the government immediately than the livelihood of 200 workers, who are employed by him, was at stake. (NT) STRIKE HALTS SBI OPERATIONS: Banking operations at all the 54 branches of State Bank of India were drastically affected on Friday as 2800 employees went on a day's strike as part of the call given by the union at the national level. There was no banking clearance as the clearing houses at Mapusa, Margao, Panjim, Vasco and Ponda remained closed. (H) TOURISM DELEGATION LEAVES FOR WTM: A state tourism delegation led by Tourism Minister Matanhy Saldanha will leave November 6 for London, to attend the World Travel Mart scheduled to be held from November 8 to 11. The delegation comprises Tourism secretary R Raghuraman, Deputy Director Pamela Mascarenhas and an information assistant. (GT) CALANGUTE COPS NAB PROSTITUTES: Three prostitutes from Mumbai, who had made Baga their camping grounds, were nabbed by the Calangute police on November 4 evening.Sources disclosed that Baga, Calangute and Candolim have become hunting grounds for call girls from Mumbai, who are ousting the Russian hookers from Calangute. (H) CM RULES OUT KORGAO GARBAGE PLANT OPERATION: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has assured that the State government would not carry out the proposed Garbage Management and Disposal Plant at Korgao. (H) CONTRACT FARMING: The limitation of tenancy laws have multiplied litigations in the State creating a fright in the minds of farmers and land owners, and the government is looking into these laws to introduce changes that will facilitate contract farming, stated Chief Secretary DS Negi while speaking at the opening session of the one-day conference on Contract Farming and Amendment of APMC on November 5. (H) CENTRE TO OPEN IFFI OFFICE: The Directorate of Film Festival, Government of India, will start its office at Old GMC complex on November 16 for the International Film Festival of India scheduled to begin month-end. (H) HUT CATCHES FIRE AT MAJORDA: A hut belonging to one Thomas Pereira at Calata-Majorda, accidentally caught fire late on November 5 evening causing a loss of Rs.60,000. Property worth Rs.90,000 was salvaged. (H) DRIVING TURTLES AWAY: The forest department is worried that the unabated trawling activities at Galgibaga and sprawling shacks at Morjim and Agonda may not only delay the arrival of Live Ridleys for the current nesting season, but also drive away the turtles from the three nesting sites. Even as the nesting season is supposed to have begun on September 10, no nestings have been reported at Agonda and Morjim till date. At Galgibaga, only on nesting has been reported on October 23. (H) ART TALK: Kerkar Art Complex, Calangute, will host a talk-cum-presentation on art by Goa-based artist Shireen Mody on November 7 from 4 pm to 6 pm. Meanwhile, the Kerkar Art Complex in collaboration with IFFI will hold an art exhibition on Miramar beach which will have on display painting, drawings, sculptures and installations of various Goa-based artists. (H) EXCELLENCE AWARD FOR MANDOVI FISHERMEN SOCIETY: National Co-operative Development Corporation has selected Mandovi Fishermen Marketing Co-operative Society from Goa for Co-operative Excellence Award 2004. The Society chairman Victor Gonsalves said this is the first time a fisheries society in Goa is receiving the award while it is the second time a co-operative venture in the state is being honoured with this award. The Society with turnover of Rs.20.60 crore extends all facilities to the boat owners. Malim jetty where it operates from, is one of the biggest jetties with a fleet of 250 trawlers. (GT) PARENTS HAND OVER DAUGHTER TO COPS: The parents of a 15-year-old girl, worried that she was involved in "indecent activities", found a unique solution to their problem: They handed their daughter over to the Women's police station hoping that the cops would be able to reform her. The girl's mother told officers that her daughter was of "wayward character" and suspected that she was involved in the flesh trade. (GT) PLEA ON GOPINATH TEMPLE: Bombay High Court at Goa admitted a petition filed by Goa Heritage Action Group in the matter of the remains of Shri Gopinath Temple, Neturlim, and protection of other ancient monuments in Goa. The temple was demolished on 7 August, 2004, despite the appeals by the petitioners to look into the temple's historicity and antiquity. (GT) MATANHY'S STAND: Tourism Minister Matanhy Saldanha had said that the scheme of giving land to the landless was irrelevant as there are hardly any houseless families after the passing of the Mundkar Act. Speaking as a leader of Gomant Lok Pokx some years back, he had alleged that the scheme was being pushed to create a vote bank of migrant labourer. On Friday, he urged the government to review all housing schemes to find out whether it has benefited persons or whether it has been manipulated by vested interests for commercial purpose. (GT) CHARTER PLANE HAS WING COLLISION: Over 340 passengers and crew - including 255 British tourists on a holiday to Goa - had a miraculous escape on November 4 when two planes collided with each other while taxiing to take off on a runway at the Manchester airport in UK. A British budget airline, BMI Baby Boeing 737, clipped the wing of chartered Excel Airways flight XLAS 340, traveling from Gatwick airport to Goa (H) EXTENDED STAY IN GOA: A one-day holiday was accidentally added to the vacation of 168 charter tourists in Goa, when their Excel Airways 767 flight was cancelled at the Dabolim International Airport on November 5 morning. (H) ECO-FRIENDLY DISPOSAL OF GARBAGE: Green Goa Works chairman and fashion designer Wendell Rodricks on Tuesday (November 2) introduced the company's two new products for eco-friendly disposal of garbage and solid waste by converting them into valuable and profitable resources. The first of these environmentally benign technologies is called Effective Micro-Organisms, which is a microbial solution based on benign microorganisms. And the second is vermicomposting units, which process garbage through earthworms and produce high quality manure for plants. (GT) RELIGIOUS CONVENTION AT NUVEM: The first National Konkani Catholic Charismatic Convention will be held in Goa from November 11 to 14 at Carmel College grounds, Nuvem. (GT) RADISSON TO HOST WORLD'S LONGEST DANCE PARTY: Radisson White Sands Resort Goa announced that it would host 'The World's Longest Dance Party. Starting December 29, 2004, the party will go on well over 65 hours non-stop. The event will also coincide with the New Year celebrations. The party plans to break the previous Guinness record for the longest dance party, which lasted for 53 hours. Approximately 50 dancers will be selected for the competition. The party will be held at Radisson's Gravity Pool with world class DJs. Around 5000 guests form all over the world are expected. (GT) GERMAN UNIVERSITY PHD FOR GOAN STUDENT: Dr Ravi Xavier Fernandes, a resident of Tollecanto in Velim, was the first Goan student pursuing MSc in Chemistry from the Goa University to be awarded a PhD degree from the University of Karlsruhe in Germany. He was awarded this prestigious degree as Doctor of Philosophy in Natural Sciences. Published in Germany, Dr Fernandes' thesis is titled "Shock tube investigations of the reaction kinetics of small unsaturated hydrocarbon species" by Cuvillier Verlag (Publishers), Goettingen. The thesis has been recognised as a very significant contribution to the field of combustion kinetics. (GT) CATAO WAS VASCO SC'S LOYAL SOLDIER: Catao was a popular footballer in the seventies.
