STAGE SET FOR KONKANI MUSIC FEST: The 11th All India Konkani Music Festival beginning today (February 7) evening promises to bring out the legacy of Konkani music in full glory and splendour. The stage is all set for the two-day event. After the inaugural ceremony, Bondo, Goa's ace percussionist will present "Drums of Goa", this will be followed by a tribute to Chris Perry, Alfred Rose and Pt Jitendra Abisheki. (H) DRIVER KILLED IN MISHAP: A loaded naphtha tanker and truck collided with each other on February 6 at Malpem Pernem. The truck driver Anappa Bilani of Karnataka was killed on the spot, while four others were seriously hurt. (H) ONLOOKER DIES: An onlooker, Anand Desai, watching the removal of the naphtha tanker collapsed and died of a heart attack. Dessai, who was riding a scooter, stopped to watch the operations to remove the tanker. (H) AWARD FOR ALFRED ROSE: Eminent artiste of Konkani stage, late Alfred Rose, will be presented Goa's State Cultural award posthumously by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar in the presence of Art and Culture Minister Ramrao Dessai and eminent musicologist Bhaskar Chandavarkar during the inaugural function of the second all-India Konkani Sangeet Sammelan which starts at the Alfred Rose Nagar, EDC grounds, Patto-Panaji, at 6 pm today, 7 February. (GT) BHANDARIS DEMAND OBC STATUS: The Gomantak Bhandari Samaj yesterday presented a strong claim before the National Commission for Other Backward castes for the inclusion of the Bhandari-Naik community in the Central list of other backward castes. Ranjit Satardekar, who presented the case of the GBS, claimed before the Commission that the 3-lakh strong community in Goa was being 'ostracised' and marginalized by the upper castes. A section claiming to represent the Christian toddy-tapping community also placed a demand that they too be extended the same benefit of being listed as an OBC on par with the Hindu Bhandari-Naik community. (H) CODE OF CONDUCT FOR JOURNALISTS: The chairman of Press Council of India, Mr Justice (retd) Jayachandra Reddy, said the journalists should evolve a code of conduct for themselves. "The most powerful weapon that a journalist can possess is the freedom of the press and hence the unions of journalists, without entirely depending on the PCI, should unite together and fight, if their independence is affected or they face problems related to their jobs," he added. Mr Reddy was interacting with the local pressmen. (NT) BJP SQUEEZED EXCHEQUER TO 'FEEL GOOD': The Congress Party in Goa has strongly decried what it charged was the squandering of the country's exchequer by the NDA-BJP alliance to "create" a feel-good factor in the country and the State through the printed and electronic medium. President of the Goa Pradesh Congress Party, Luizinho Faleiro charged, "The BJP government is spending Rs.600 crore from the exchequer for self-aggrandisement and is hogging the credit for things they don't deserve." (H) USGAO BRIDGE CRUMBLING! Usgao bridge has become the epitome of a crumbling infrastructure in Ponda taluka. Constructed in 1963 soon after the liberation of Goa, the bridge has faced a relentless onslaught of trucks plying in this mining belt and is now crumbling under the unbearable load of these vehicles. Yet, it still stands in place notwithstanding the absence of efforts by the concerned authorities in overhauling it. (GT) WHAT WE CAN DO FOR OUR SCHOOLS: Fortunately, in Goa, the situation is largely different from those of the metro cities, where parents have to queue up-and face meaningless, if not humiliating, interviews-even for admission of the nursery and primary-age children. Maybe interviews and donations are creeping here too, specially in the urban areas among so-called elite schools. But there are still options. At least here, there are a large number of schools, which our kids can get admission to.But there are other issues. There is a migration of students from the rural to the urban areas, and the consequent further decline of our rural schools. (Edit in Herald) CONTAIN "PAO" PRICE: The United Goans Democratic Party has urged the government to take corrective measures to control the price of "pao" (bread), terming the recent hike as unfair and exploitative. Party Secretary General, Anacleto Viegas, said the increase in price of 50 gm bread by more than 75 per cent by increasing the size by 20 gms, is unfair and unjustified. (H) IT CONFERENCE: As part of its brand building exercise for Goa as a preferred IT destination in the country, the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry is organizing a two-day conference on the theme --The Goa Agenda-Emerging Markets in IT" at Cidade de Goa, Dona Paula, on February 20-21. (H) KALARANG 2004: Governor Kidar Nath Sahani will inaugurate the fourth Kalarang 2004, a festival of dance, music and theatre on 12 February at 6 pm at Gomant Vidya Niketan, Margao. The festival will be held for five days from 12 to 16 February. (GT) BOOK ON BIRDS RELEASED: The Goa Foundation has released its latest book "Birds of Goa" written by Heinz Lainer, which is intended to be a reference work for serious bird watchers and ornithologists. The Foundation has published and released this book as part of its contribution to the promotion of eco-tourism in the State. Written by a German, "Birds of Goa" attempts to provide information on the habitat, population, distribution, migration, breeding status and any locally relevant data on 420 bird species that have been reliably recorded in Goa. (H) LEADING POULTRY FARMER DEAD: Pioneer of poultry industry and a leading poultry farmer in Goa, Joao Agnelo Valadares, passed away of a cardiac attack on February 6. He was 64. A gold medalist in poultry industry in Pune, Mr Valadares was a former chairman of the All Goa Poultry Farmers Association and a former president of the Nagoa Comunidade. (H) CO'S TRANSFER IRKS VASCO CITIZENS: Efficiency and transparency in the administration has claimed a victim in Vasco this time the Chief Officer of the Mormugao Municipal Council Elvis Gomes. Vasco residents are left fuming over the arbitrary action of the State government in transferring Gomes, a no-nonsense bureaucrat who was widely perceived to have ushered in a corruption-free environment now prevailing at the MMC.
