GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 09 Dec 2003 'EXPRESS THOUGHTS IN MARATHI AND KONKANI': The sixth Youth Konkani literary meet opened in Mapusa on December 8 with the presidential address of renowned Konkani writer-poet Sanjiv Verenkar. He urged upon the audience to express their thoughts freely in both Marathi and Konkani while keeping intact their commitment to the Konkani language. Fr Kyriel D'Souza opined that each one has the freedom to speak any language but stressed that the language must emerge from the heart and not from the mind. Noted Konkani writer Pundalik Naik said that the youth should inculcate the habit of reading. The college Principal, Newman Fernandes, welcomed the audience while Satish Bute summarized the activities of the meet held a year ago. (GT)
FILM DATES LIKELY TO BE RESCHEDULED: The State government is likely to reschedule the dates of the International Film festival of India-Goa between 3-12 December 2004 on a suggestion from the Central government. The change is sought in view of the earlier dates of holding the IFFI 2004 after 15 December 2004 were thought to be inconvenient as the Kerala Film festival is also scheduled during the same period. (GT) FEAST OF PANAJI CHURCH: The feast of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception was celebrated yesterday with love and devotion in the parishes of Panaji, Calangute, Moira and Margao. The Archbishop Patriarch Reverend Raul Gonsalves celebrated the High Mass at the Panaji Church at 10 am. In his homily, the Archbishop elaborated on the theme of the feast "Our Lady of Immaculate Conception will be our model and help in implementing the directions of the Pastoral Synod". (NT) EXPANSION OF MINING IN BICHOLIM OPPOSED: Though the continuance of existing leases in Maina, Mayem, Pissurlem, Bicholim, Sanquelim and other places were not opposed per se, various groups from these areas strongly protested the proposed expansion of mining activities on environmental grounds. The marathon hearing which started at 10.30 am and went on till 5 pm at Sanqueli m, was held to hear the views on expansion of mining with regard to half-a-dozen leases in an area of around 500 hectares. The freedom fighters strongly criticised the government's decision to honour the new FFS without proper scrutiny of their papers to establish their credentials. (GT) SPANISH PLAY 'BLOOD FLOWER' AT KA: Juan Monsalve and Brenda Polo, both of Colombia, South America, have come down to India with a Spanish play "Blood Flower" to be staged at the Black Box of the Kala Academy today at 12 noon. The play is a form of dance theatre based on the Popol Vuh, a sacred text of the Maya Indians. The essence of the play is the destruction of the bad and the triumph of the good.
