WOMEN STAGE DEMO: Bailancho Ekvott yesterday stage a 'Rasta Roko' for around
45 minutes at Baradi Velim in protest against the rape and murder of a
ten-year-old at Tarivaddo, Betul. Auda Viegas, president of the women's
group informed that her sole purpose of the protest was to focus on the
growing crime rate against women in Goa and also to mark the International
Women's Day. More than 200 people backed the women's group. (GT)

24-HOUR HELPLINE FOR WOMEN IN DISTRESS DEMANDED: Expressing grave concern
over the rise in crime against women in Goa, ladies once again reiterated
their long-held demands for a 24-hour helpline for women in distress, a
full-fledged women police station, short stay homes for women with special
needs and other welfare measures, at a public meeting organised on March 9
by Bailancho Saad on the occasion of International Women's Day. (NT)

MOVE TO 'MODIFY' KA STALLED: A proposal to 'modify' the structure at the
Kala Academy complex to accommodate the International Film festival has been
shelved, information Secretary, Jayashree Raghuraman, told Herald. Instead,
a semi-permanent structure complete with air-conditioned hangers and one
40-seater section for the competition films jury, is to be built on the area
west of the KA complex. This dismantable structure will serve as the main
auditorium for the festival, Raghuraman said. (H)

SPELL OUT STAND ON HELMETS, CANDIDATES TOLD: The Motorcycle Action group has
urged two-wheeler riders to demand that the candidates contesting the
forthcoming Lok Sabha elections make their stand clear on the helmet issue.
It has also demanded that the Goa government should immediately clarify its
stand on the helmet rule in view of the fact that the traffic authorities
are not implementing the rule as reportedly instructions have been given not
to enforce the helmet rule till the Lok Sabha elections apparently to avoid
any backlash from two-wheeler riders. MAG spokesman Adv Aires Rodrigues said
that the enforcing authorities should not be given any unofficial
instructions on implementation of the rule to differentiate any particular
section of two-wheeler riders. (H)

71 SENSITIVE POLLING BOOTHS IN NORTH GOA: The Collectorate North Goa
yesterday declared 71 out of the total 448 polling booths in North Goa
parliamentary constituency, as sensitive, for the forthcoming Lok Sabha
polls, after receiving the related information from the superintendent of
police (North). (NT)

TENDER FOR IFFI WORKS ALLOTTED: In a bid to speed up construction works
simultaneously to be ready in time for hosting the International Film
festival of India Goa 2004, several tenders have been finalized by the
Infrastructure and Core Committees last week. (GT)

REPTILE IN SOFT DRINK BOTTLE: A dead infant of a reptile (4.5 inch in length
and 3 mm in diameter) was found in a soft drink bottle at Chhotta Bazaar,
Baina-Vasco. A 400-strong crowd gathered to have a look at the reptile in
the bottle. One Pandu Shivaji Chavvan (30) of Baina, approached the
Chandrabhan Milk Dairy and Restaurant, for a soft drink. While having the
drink, he was shocked to find the reptile in the bottle. The gravity of the
shock was such that he fainted on the spot. (NT)

PUBLIC HEARING ON MINING ACTIVITIES: A mining concession along the River
Kushavati was being operated even whilst the lessee, allegedly a foreign
national, had expired and there was no provision for continuation. This
allegation was leveled by villagers of Mushcaverem at the public hearing at
the South Goa Collectors' office, Margao, to hear various parties on the
proposed expansion of mining activities in the village and some other areas
of Sanguem. (GT)

RECORD FISH PRODUCE: Goa has registered its highest fish produce this
financial year, to the tune of 91,000 metric tonne, a rise by 21,000 mt as
compared to the previous year. The Director of the department of Fisheries,
Mr SC Verenkar, speaking to The Navhind Times said that the rise may not be
attributed to any particular reason, however, strict enforcement of the ban
on fishing activities during monsoon period, may be partly responsible for
the growth. Mr Verenkar also observed that the total exports of marine fish
and fish products form Goa and its surrounding coastal areas like Karwar,
during the year 2001, was 7,714 metric tonne, earning an amount of Rs.30.07
crore, while that during the year 2002 it was 15,594 mt, fetching Rs.56.20
crore. (NT)

BARDEZ TO GET RESTRICTED WATER SUPPLY: Due to sudden breakdown on 700 mm CI
conveying main (Assonora-Mapusa) at Tivim, there will be restricted water
supply to Bardez taluka on March 9. (H)

'TOUCHING THE TOE" RELEASED: Alexandre Moniz Barbosa's excellent novel
"Touching the Toe", a fictional tale surrounding the religious hysteria that
erupted in Goa on the arrival of the body of Saint Francis Xavier, was
released at the hands of Rajya Sabha MP Eduardo Faleiro, at a well-attended
function at Fundacao Oriente in Panjim yesterday evening. While lauding the
effort of the enthusiastic young writer, MP Faleiro said, "Alexandre Moniz
Barbosa deals with the subject in a very mature and sensitive way. While
complimenting him I am paying a tribute to the journalistic fraternity to
which he belongs...Goa is a small place but it is difficult to find a place
like it from where so many books of high quality have been written." Two
passages from the 221-page well-written Goan novel, priced at Rs.150, was
read out during the function by Ms Nizia Carmo Lobo. (GoaNOW)

ANCIENT NAMES OF GOAN VILLAGES AND TOWNS: Vilas Sonu Surlakar will talk on
"Ancient names of Goan Villages and Towns" on 12 March, at Mapusa Residency
[Tourist Hostel] Conference Hall, between 7.30 and 8 P.M. Those residing in
and around Mapusa/Mhapsa/Mapuca and interested in knowing a little bit more
about the names of places, are welcome to join the members of the Rotary
Club of Mapuca for the talk. There are quite a few villages and wards with
the same name, e.g. Badem, Baga, Caranzol, Camurlim, Chicalim, Kerim/Querim,
Sinquerim/ Sinquetim, Maina, Macazana, Nagoa, Naroa/Narva, Nanora/Nanoda,
Navelim, Pirna/Pirni, Sanvordem, Quitol/Quitla, etc in different parts of
Goa. The name is derived from the topography, vegetation, navigation, etc.

HOLLYWOOD COMES TO CAPITAL TOWN: 'The Bourne Supremacy', sequel to the
blockbuster 'The Bourne Identity', is being shot a number of locations in
the State over the next few days. The movie is loosely based on the Robert
Ludlum classic by the same name. Hollywood stars Matt Damon (The Bourne
Identity), Franka Potente (Bourne Identity) and Karl Urban (Lord of the
Rings-Return of the King) are the only three members of the cast who are in
Goa. Other actors include Joan Allen, Julia Styles and Brian Cox. (Reuven

SANITARY CONDITIONS IN HAIR CUTTING SALOONS: The State government, after its
recent cleanliness and hygiene drive concerning eateries and their staff
following the jaundice epidemic witnessed by the city, has now decided to
maintain a strict vigilance over the sanitary conditions existing in the
hair cutting saloons and beauty parlours in the State. (NT)

FOREST DEPT FACES POLICE IRE: The Forest department has been indicted for
lapses resulting in the killing of a leopard at Agassaim on February 20. The
police report, which has been submitted to the department, clearly states
that if the Forest department had to come on time, it would have saved the
leopard from being killed and civilians from being injured, sources said.

GOA'S BIO-DIVERSITY HAILED: Goa state spread over an area of 3702 sq kms is
rich in bio-diversity and that the key to protect it lies in sustainable
development, said Sugeetkumar Dongre of the Centre for Environment
Education, Ahmedabad, while addressing the students on the occasion of
Science Day at Mandrem High School, Mandrem. Explaining the distinct
features of Goa's three regions-coastal, mid-land and Western
Ghat-Sugeetkumar pointed out that all kinds of eco-systems supporting plant
life, animal life and human life co-exist in Goa. (GT)

CASTE, COMMUNITY.: Election time brings out differences based on caste and
community as otherwise seldom happens in our State. Goa may live quite
amicably, or at least quite in tolerance, for the rest of the time. But,
come elections, and the main basis of polarization in India's smallest state
happens along the lines of community or caste. In the heat of the moment,
and the bitterness thus generated, we all tend to forget how we are all the

CHORAO HAS NEW SARPANCH: Shrikrishna Haldankar was unanimously elected
sarpanch of Chorao village panchayat at a meeting held on Monday. Raqueta
Colaco was elected deputy sarpanch. (H)

FREEDOM FIGHTER PASSES AWAY: Veteran freedom fighter Narasinha alias
Bhanudas Rajaram Kavlekar passed away after a brief illness at his Mapusa
residence on 25 February. (GT)

moved into the next round with a hard-fought 3-1 win over Pilerne Sports
