SHOCKING SUNDAY FOR JAMIR: Governor SC Jamir, who took time off to visit the villagers of Cazur, Corla and Mangal in Quepem taluka, was shocked at the dismal pace of progress in these remote villages. In a grueling seven-hour tour often on foot and up the slopes and necessitating climbing of the slope, the governor head a litany of long pending grievances of villagers relating to lack of adequate water supply, electricity, health facilities, roads, transport and other basic infrastructure. (GT) FAR FROM DEVELOPED: Stating that Goa was not a developed State, Governor SC Jamir said that many rural areas were yet to be provided with the basic necessities of water, education, roads and health. On Sunday, during his tour around the wards of Nanegotton, Korlamoddi, Korla, Cazur, Devrem in Pirla in Quepem and Mangal in Sanguem and after an interaction with the poor villagers residing in the villages, Mr Jamir remarked, "We shall be fooling ourselves, if we term these villages to be developed when the villagers residing here lack all the basic necessities." (H) GOA ASSEMBLY SESSION STARTS TODAY: A five-day winter session of Goa Assembly which starts at 2.30 pm on 10 January is likely to be stormy as the opposition parties have geared up to grill the government on issues pertaining to the withdrawal of the controversial VCD on Goa Freedom Struggle and the amount spent on 35th International Film Festival of India held in Goa. (GT) CRZ VIOLATIONS: The increase in illegal constructions near the coastal belt in violation of the Coastal Regulation Zone has become a major problem in the State. Information available from office of the Mormugao mamlatdar shows that in the coastal belts of Cavelossim, Velsao, Cansaulim, Arossim, Palem, Bogmalo, Khariavaddo and Baina around 41 illegal constructions have come up, violating the CRZ guidelines in the Mormugao taluka alone. STRIX Television shows, Survivor, has taken over a Baga beachside restaurant - Drop Anchor - and has flown down 12 participants and several crew in this Rs.9-crore venture that spans over 12 weeks. "The purpose of the show is for the participants to run the restaurant, make it a commercial hit and make guests happy." (GT) MARATHI FILM TO BE LAUNCHED: A full-length Marathi feature film, Rahile Door Ghar Maaze, will be launched in Panaji, on January 10. The film produced under the banner Shree Vaishnavi Films by Mr Sharmila Mayekar, will feature Ajinkya Deo, Alka Kubal, Aathley and Varsha Usgaonkar in the lead roles. The shooting of the film will be completed in a non-stop 18-day schedule. (NT) COMET MACHOLZ SEEN IN GOA: Comet Machholz is seen in the late evenings through a low powered reflector telescope. (GT) LAND REVENUE REFORMS: The need for reforms in the Goa Land Revenue Laws was expressed by senior advocate and former advocate general for the state of Goa, MS Usgaoncar. (H) BABY TURTLES RELEASED: Around180 baby turtles were released off the Galgibag coastline last week, according to information provide by Canacona Range Forest Officer Paresh Parab. In October last year, four nests at Galgibaga were located and protected, out of which eggs in two of the nests hatched. Apart from Galgibag, such nests are also located at Agonda. Unlike in the past when locals used to feast on these eggs, awareness about the conversation of these species seems to have dawned on them, thanks to the efforts of these officials. (GT) LONE TALATHI: The absence of a full-fledged talathi at Chinchinim villages panchayat has severely hampered work here and has put the villagers to tremendous inconvenience. Although Xaverito Rodrigues holds the charge presently, he is also burdened with additional duty as he also officiates as the Talathi or Navelim and Assolna village panchayats. Hence he is forced to allot only two days per panchayat.
