THE SHOW GOES ON: "International Film Festival of India 2004 was a success
and we will start preparation for IFFI-2005 from Monday (December 13), said
Neelam Kapur, director IFFI, at a press conference on December 10. Neelam
Kapur denied rumours that the IFFI 2004 was a flop as it failed to attract
good films. (GT)

CM'S PROMISE: Riding on the wave of success at the just concluded
International Film Festival of India, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar is
beaming with confidence of making it a bigger success at the 36th IFFI,
which will be staged in Goa once again. A new festival theatre is also on
the cards and a four-lane road between Pollem and Patradevi would be
constructed within 18 months, he stated while addressing journalists in
Panjim on December 10. (GT)

KITE CARNIVAL: The Third International Goa Kite Carnival was inaugurated by
the Tourism Minister, Mr Matanhy Saldanha, at Miramar beach yesterday. The
Kite Carnival will continue from morning to dusk till December 12 and would
be accompanied by music. The kite carnival is based on the theme "One Sky
One World" and is a part of the recently concluded International Film
Festival of India. The event is conceptualized and organised by Nomad
Travels and the Nomad Heritage Trust. Around 40 kite fliers, including stunt
kite fliers and power kiting teams from USA, UK, France, Holland, Germany,
Australia, Austria, Belgium and Singapore are participating in the event,
besides fliers from Mangalore, Mumbai and Jaipur. Nicolas Grez and Sylvain
Grez the twins from France, Mr Frank Coenraets and Ms Ka Van Looken, a
couple from Belgium, are among the international kite fliers. Babu Khan, a
veteran kite-maker from Jaipur, known for flying 200 kites on a single line,
will be an attraction at the kite carnival. (NT)

REPEAL OF ELECTRICITY ACT DEMANDED: The Electricity Employees Union on
Friday held a gate meeting at Power House, Aquem-Margao, and demanded the
immediate repealing of the Electricity Act. (H)

NARCOTICS STILL IN DEMAND: Even though the prices of narcotic drugs have
gone up, the demand still seems to be picking up. Incidentally, this year
the number of tourists visiting Goa has also shot up and likewise the demand
for drugs too. Foreigners holidaying in Goa are a major market for the drug
lords. (H)

MORE SHACKS LIKELY: During an informal chat with the reporters, Tourism
Minister Matanhy Saldanha said that so far 45 applications had been received
by the tourism department to set up more shacks on beaches and that they
would be permitted only if adequate space was available. (GT)

AGENT PROMISES FLORY ALL HELP: Fearing possible action, the agent who
allegedly obtained a fake ECNR stamp on the passport of 24-year-old Flory
Nevidita D'Souza, visited her at Fortavaddo in Betim on Friday, with an
assurance of all assistance to the victim. The agent had arranged a job for
Flory to work as a housemaid in Kuwait. However, she was mercilessly beaten
by her boss when she refused to be drawn into prostitution. (H)

MARGAO POLICE CRACK WHIP ON "GODGODDO": Margao police finally stepped in at
Old Market to stop "godgoddo" and other gambling activities at the annual
3-day fair held on the occasion of the local feast. (H)

MIRACULOUS ESCAPE: Dr Vijyan and his wife Dr Bharati, both retired and
residents of Porvorim, had a miraculous escape as their car turned turtle on
the Porvorim highway between Porvorim and Guirim opposite Ticlo Petrol pump

TEENAGER RAPES 9-YEAR-OLD: The Margao police on a complaint of the
grandmother of a nine-year-old girl has registered an offence against a
minor boy aged 16 for allegedly raping her grand daughter. Both the accused
and the victim belong to the labour class. (GT)

PLASTIC RECYCLING MACHINERY: The Rotary Club of Porvorim recently presented
a plastic re-cycling machinery to the needy women, residents of 20-Point
Colony of Socorro panchayat. (NT)

FOOD, CULTURAL FESTIVAL: The annual food and cultural festival organised by
the Goa Tourism Department will be held from January 20 to 23 next and makes
a comeback to its second venue - National Institute of Watersports ground in
Caranzalem. (H)

ARPORA ZATRA: The Shree Chauranginath Devasthan at Arpora will celebrate its
annual zatra on December 11. The religious ceremonies will be performed in
the morning, followed by cultural programmes, which include "palkhi"
procession and "deeputsov" (lights festival) in the evening. (H)

DRUG PEDDLER HELD: The Margao police arrested on Shivkumar Kamlakar Mishra,
42, from Bihar, for possessing 1.61 kg ganja worth Rs.20,000. Mishra, who is
married to a girl from Colem, has been residing in Goa. (GT)

STATE ASSEMBLY SESSION: Goa Governor SC in an order issued on December 9 has
summoned on January 10, 2005, the State legislative assembly at the assembly
hall at 2.30 pm. (H)

MANI RATNAM IN HOSPITAL: Film Director, Mani Ratnam, who was admitted to
Apollo Victor Hospital, Balbhat, in Margao, on December 9 evening, after he
complained of chest pain, continues to be admitted in the hospital. (GT)

ANKITA TOPS: Ankita Dattaprasad Bhat, a student of Bhatikar Model English
High School, Margao, secured first rank in Goa in Hindi Examination (Subodh)
conducted by the Rashtrabhasha Maharashtra Pune Vidyapit in September. (GT)

BRITON WANTS TO CONTINUE WITH AMBEDKAR'S WORK: Alex Kennedy alias
Dharmachari Subhuti of England who embraced Buddhism nearly 35 years ago is
the senior most member of the Trilokya Buddha Mahasanga (Western Buddhist
Order) and has been visiting different parts of the country and delivering
talks on late Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar and world peace. He will deliver a talk
at the Institute Menezes Braganza Hall, Panaji, at 10.30 am on 11 December.

MAN GOES MISSING: Alleluia Menezes, wife of Luciano, informed the fire
personnel that her husband might have ventured into a pond at Sucaldem in
Chinchinim to catch fish, and suspects that he may have drowned. Luciano's
net was found lying on the periphery of the pond. The personnel of the Fire
Brigade, however, searched the body till the afternoon, but could not find

ENGLISH DRAMA AT BENAULIM: Reality Outreach India will present an English
drama "Heaven's Gates and Hell's Flames" from December 11 to 12 at Trinity
College Hall, Benaulim, from 6 pm onwards. (H)

KERALA KRAFTS FEST: Tourism Minister Matanhy Saldanha inaugurated the Kerala
Krafts Fest 2004 organised by the Kairali Arts and Crafts of Kerala at the
Institute Menezes Braganza Hall, Panaji. According to Kairali manager, Manoj
Benjamin, the main features of the 10-day exhibition was carvings sculpted
from rosewood, sandal and cedar wood, brass lamps and other utilities,
traditional Kerala handlooms, banana fibre gabs,  purses, coconut shell
articles, Kerala spices, etc. (GT)

NAVAL BAND'S MUSIC: A grand show of Naval Central Band of the Indian Navy
will be held with the collaboration of Kala Academy on 15 December at 6.30
pm, at the Dinanath Mangueshkar Kala Mandir. The Naval Central Band, the
premier band of the Indian Navy, was commissioned in 1945. (GT)

CRISTIANO DIED OF CARDIAC ARREST: REPORT: Shedding light on the death of
Dempo's Brazillian football Cristiano de Lima Junior, the City Police
Commissioner quoting the post mortem report, on December 10, said the
footballer's death was caused by a cardiac arrest.With the final post mortem
report clearly indicating the cause of the death, the police might not
pursue the complaint lodged by Dempo coach Armando Colaco accusing Paul
(Mohun Bagan custodian) of deliberately committing foul on Cristiano, who
had scored five goals for Dempo in the championship. (GT)
