COPS ARREST HARD CORE CRIMINAL: A hardened criminal Carlos Cardozo alias
Packlo of Pomburpa and presently staying at Ucassaim was arrested by the
Mapusa police on the charge of seriously assaulting a bar owner (Manoj
Mhambrey) at Aldona on Monday night. (GT)

12 INDIANS AMONG 44 DEAD IN UAE PLAN CRASH: Forty-four people died and two
survived when an Iranian plane crashed and burst into flames yesterday,
narrowly missing a crowded residential area in the United Arab Emirates. The
dead comprised 19 Iranians, 12 Indians, four Egyptians, two Filipinos, two
Algerians, one Bangladeshi, one Chinese, one Nigerian, one Syrian and one

COMUNIDADE "GHOTALA": Mapusa police have registered two cases of criminal
breach of trust and misappropriation against the former office bearers of
the managing committee of Mapusa Comunidade for collecting money for
allotment of plots and not depositing the amount received from the
applicants in the Comunidade account during the year 1993-1995. (GT)

KONKANI MEET AT CALICUT: Not far from the place where Vasco da Gama landed
and where Goans fleeing their land centuries ago carved out their home, the
Konkani diaspora will meet for three days to discuss about their linguistic
identity and think of better ways to preserve it. Calicut in Kerala is home
to 500 Konkani-speaking Hindu, Catholic and Muslim families and here the
curtain will go up on the 24th session of All India Konkani Parishad on 13
February at Vatsala Manjunath Rao Nagar at 5 pm. (GT)

BODY FOUND: Vasco police on Tuesday recovered a highly decomposed male body
of about 30 years at Chicalim ground. Police has sent the body to the
mortuary at the GMC. (H)

PAY PARKING FOR PANAJI: More than a month after the government's time-frame
to the Corporation of the City of Panaji to commence pay parking in Panaji
expired, the CCP is still grappling with the issue. (NT)

KONKANI ACADEMY TO REVIVE FOLKLORE: The legacy of Konkani music in all its
splendour was witnessed at the 2nd Akhil Bharatiya Sangeet Sammelan over the
weekend in Panjim but it seems it was the beginning of a new chapter for the
organizers-the Konkan Sangeet ani Natak Academy. Having brought together
different facets of Konkani music from the Konkani-speaking region, the
Academy is now gearing up to take up various activities for enrichment of
Konkani music and theatre besides some research work. (H)

BRITON CARRYING CHARAS: Forty-year-old British National John Donohoe, who
was arrested by Anjuna police on charges of possessing 18.5 kilos of charas,
was on Tuesday (Feb 10) remanded to police custody by Mapusa Judicial
Magistrate First Class. (H)

JAPANESE STEEL INDUSTRY TEAM: Mr Kunito Akita, senior vice-president, Raw
Materials and Machinery Purchasing and Mr Hiroshi Daimon, staff manager, raw
materials department of Messrs JFE Steel Corporation, Japan, were received
on arrival at the Dabolim airport by managing director, Mr Vijay V Chowgule,
and other senior officers of Chowgule and Company Ltd. (NT)

WILD BOAR FLESH IN TEMPLE PREMISES: When thousands of devotees attended the
zatra of Shree Santeri Shantadurga Devasthan at Xeldem-Quepem from January
30 till February 10, they kept alive a practice unparalled in the state. The
celebration of the Zatra after very 12 years, the hunting of a wild boar and
the cooking of the flesh in the temple premises are all unique traditions of
the Xeldem zatra. The Xeldem zatra traces its origin to the inhabitants of
Xeldem, most of whom are Gauns Dessais, who were originally from Bicholim,
Amona and Shendrem. Well in advance of the zatra festival, the mahajans go
hunting for 12 days. They are expected to hunt a wild boar, else they cannot
celebrate the zatra in that year. (H)

LEOPARD FEAR HAUNTS POINGUINIM: A leopard prowling out at night in search of
livestock and that too, at a residential area, has once again set the alarm
bells ringing at Tirvan and Kalshi in Poinguinim panchayat areas. (H)

COMPUTERS DISTRIBUTED: As many as 45 computers were distributed to students
at the annual social gathering and prize distribution function of Vivekanand

GOA DAY AT NIRMALA INSTITUTE: The Nirmala Institute of Education, Altinho,
will be celebrating its annual feature "Goa Day" on February 11 from 10 am
to 5 pm. The teacher trainees will put up presentations on and off the stage
as a follow-8p of their project work on various aspects of Goan lifestyle. A
tiatr titled "Axea" (Greed) will also be staged on the occasion. (NT)

TIATR FESTIVAL AT KA: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, will
inaugurate the tiatr festival organised by Kala Mogi, Candolim, as part of
its Silver Jubilee celebrations on February 13 at the Kala Academy at 6.30
pm. Kala Mogi will present three prize-winning tiatr, "Ontoskorn ani Kaido"
on February 13, "Mhonvall Vikh", on February 16 and "Orth" on February 18.
The inaugural function will be attended by well-known personalities of the
Konkani stage including Rita Rose and Roseferns. (NT)

CONG CAMPAIGN FROM TOMORROW: The Congress is likely to launch its election
campaign in Goa from tomorrow as AICC general secretary in-charge of Goa
desk, Ramesh Chennithala, will address a meeting of Goa Pradesh Congress
Committee office-bearer at the Institute Menezes Braganza Hall, Panaji, at 3

JP MAY SPLIT SECULAR VOTE: The Goa Su-Raj party has said that the statement
made by Mr Subramaniam Swamy, the National president of the Janata Party
that the JP would align itself with the AIDMK led by Jayalalitha in Tamil
Nadu, would definitely have ramifications in Goa. (H)

CONDOLENCE FOR PROF MAHALE: A meeting will be organised to condole the death
of Prof Kashinath J Mahale on February 11 at 5 pm at the Institute Menezes

PHOTO EXPO AT CALANGUTE: An exhibition of photographs and painting by Dieter
Lechner will be inaugurated on February 13 at 6 pm, at Kerkar Art Complex,
Gauravaddo, Calangute. The exhibition will be opened by Sonja Weder and it
