REHABILITATION PACKAGE FOR SEX WORKERS: A rehabilitation package for 247 commercial sex workers from Baina who have opted to turn a new leaf in their life, has been offered by the State government in the form of food, clothing, shelter, health, educational and vocational training facilities at Ribandar. The shifting of these women, young and old, and some along with their families, is scheduled to be done next week at the Old Bal Niketan premises at Ribandar, which bears a new painted and clean look. In all 247 women, of which 25 are aged 'gharwallis' and the rest in their twenties, have voluntarily accepted to begin a new life by moving from away from the red light area to the state government's rehabilitation site, said Chief Secretary DS Negi. (GT) SHIFTING BAINA SEX WORKERS TEMPORARY: CM: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, told a delegation of Ribandar residents accompanied by St Cruz MLA, Ms Victoria Fernandes, and CCP councilor, Mr Doningos Pinto, that the government would shift sex workers from Baina to old Bal Niketan building at Kadamba Plateau for a few months as a part of rehabilitation package. (NT) RIBANDAR RESIDENTS OPPOSE SEX WORKERS: A delegation of Ribandar residents yesterday called on Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and submitted a memorandum registering their strong protest against the Goa government's decision to rehabilitate the Baina based sex workers at Ribandar.Adv Aires Rodrigues has wondered as to how the inmates of the red light area who were a taboo in Baina and bad for the residents of that locality, would be any good for Ribandar and warned that the government would not be allowed to create another Baina at Ribandar. (H) INTEREST-FREE LOANS TO STUDENTS: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, yesterday said the government is currently working out a system on the lines of interest-free loans for the professional college students, wherein the poor and the needy students of the non-professional colleges would also receive the same benefit. (NT) HEAVY RAINS LASH STATE: Heavy rains, which lashed the State for most part of the day, caused uprooting of trees all over the State but luckily no loss of life has been reported though some property was damaged. (GT) ONE KILLED: A 28-year-old person, Kalidas Gaonkar, died yesterday evening after a heap of plywood sheets fell on him at Shri Ashapur Wood Industry, at Costavaddo, Siolim. Gaonkar was a rickshaw driver. (NT) RAINS DELAY ARRIVAL OFF IFFI TEAM: Review of the International Film Festival of India sites in Panjim could not be taken by the three-member Information and Broadcasting ministry team on Thursday as the flight reached late due to heavy rains. (H) BUFFALOES ELECTROCUTED: A total of five buffaloes died on the spot on June 10, due to electrocution at Mangan-Kindlem in Canacona. All the buffaloes had come in contact with live electric wire. (GT) KHAREBAND EMBANKMENT FALLS: A day after a temporary road diversion a cross Rawanfond was washed away, a collapse of an embankment near the steel bridge at Khareband (Margao) hit panic buttons among the road users and nearby residents. (H) AL-QAEDA VICTIM'S BODY: The mortal remains of the Goan Joe John Fernandes, who fell to the bullets of dreaded terrorist outfit Al-Qaeda on May 30, will arrive in Goa today. The body will be laid to rest on June 12 at Cuncolim, after the funeral service at Our Lady of Piety chapel at Panzorconi. (GT) DRINKING WATER: Growth of population with inadequate water supply service, seeping of sewage into the ground water table and dumping of untreated sewage into water bodies, mostly the sea, uncontrolled use of chemical fertilizer in agriculture largely increased the risk of water contamination, said Ion Exchange India Limited Managing Director Rajesh Sharma. In his opinion the next world war would well be fought for 'water'. (GT) SALINE WATER FLOODS SHIRODA FIELDS: A breach in the bund at Shiroda has reportedly left large tracts of paddy fields inundated with saline water. Around 50 farmers, who have been affected by the situation, have made a representation to the Ponda Mamlatdar demanding an inquiry and to ensure maintenance and repair of the bundh. (H) AREAS IN MUNGUL INUNDATED: Large tracts of low-lying fields around Mungul-Seraulim belt along the banks of river Sal lay inundated since June 10 morning. So it would seem natural that the government does not want to kill the goose that lays the proverbial golden egg.
