SOLEMNITY AND GAIETY MARK EASTER IN THE STATE: Easter was celebrated with
traditional gaiety and solemnity in the State, with mid-night mass in
churches and chapel on Saturday night. Easter commemorates the most
important event in the Christian calendar-the rising of Lord Jesus from the
dead. Midnight service started with the Pascal reading followed by blessing
of the new fire, which is used to light the Pascal candle. In saying that
"Easter challenges people to be agents of peace, understanding and
fellowship", Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao's Easter message echoed the
sentiments expressed by Pope John Paul II in Rome. Governor Kidar Nath
Sahani and his wife Vimla attended midnight mass at the chapel in the Raj
Bhavan. (GT)

CONGRESS ASSAILS SHOOTING PRICES: Congress party leaders decried the steep
hike in prices of basic commodities like water, electricity, LPG, and also
taxes during the BJP-led NDA rule in the last five years, at the Navelim
public meeting in support of their candidate, Churchill Alemao, for the
ensuing parliamentary election. Most of the Congress leaders in a show of
strength and unity who attended the public meeting blamed the central
government under PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee for alleged disruption of the
Public Distribution System. The South Goa candidate also ridiculed the
Parrikar-led government in the State for generating revenue through unjust
means and for pursing shifting of the civilian airport from Dabolim to Mopa.

the BJP candidate for the North Goa parliamentary seat, Mr Shripad Naik,

ROMI DAILIES-A LOST CAUSE? So far, almost a hundred Romi Konkani papers or
periodicals have been published at different points of time since the year
1889. "Udentechem Sallok" by Eduardo Bruno de Souza was the first Romi
Konkani periodical that started in 1889.The Church in Goa has a network of
about 160 parishes, including ten major parishes able to subscribe to a
thousand copies each. For the remaining 150 parishes to buy even 100 to 500
copies is not far fetched. A paper run by the Church could easily fetch over
25,000 subscribers without much effort, a figure that could grow given a
proper strategy and promotion. (Peter Raposo, SFX, in Herald)
