BIOTECH POLICY FOR GOA: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on December 12 said
that the government would release its Biotechnology Policy before the next
Budget, while asserting that Goa has large biotech potential. He was
speaking at the valedictory function of the two-day seminar on the
Opportunities in Biotech Industry for SSI sector, at Hotel Got Marriott,
Miramar. (GT)

FOUR-LANING OF PERNEM HIGHWAY: The State government has decided in principle
to undertake the four-laning of the road (105 km). Chief Minister Manohar
Parrikar said on December 12 that the State government would complete the
four-laning work of the road in 18 months from the time the work order is
given. How the State government plans to four-lane stretches of NH-17 which
are running through residential areas is still not known. (H)

CT SCAN ON JUNIOR'S BODY: The Cristiano de Lima Junior saga took another
intriguing turn when the FIFA Medical Commission ordered for a CT scan to be
done on the body of the Brazilian striker. (H)

DELIMITATION PANEL COMING TODAY: The Delimitation Commission headed by
Justice Kuldip Singh is arriving in Goa on December 13 to hold public
hearings to the draft proposals for the delimitation of 40 Assembly and two
Parliamentary constituencies in Goa. (GT)

POWER CUTS IN PORVORIM: The Porvorim Residents Welfare Association is up in
arms against the government for imposing frequent power shut-downs for
almost eight to ten hours each day since the beginning of IFFI 'due to
diversion of power to Panaji'. (GT)

ADDL RS.30 CR FOR HEALTH: The Health Minister, Dr Suresh Amonkar,
inaugurated the workshop on "Health Police in Goa", organized by the NRI Goa
Facilitation Centre at Miramar Residency, Miramar. The workshop held
discussion on topics like tertiary health care, health tourism and trauma
including public and private participation. Dr Amonkar said that Goa is the
only State to increase the financial allotment of health policy by Rs.30
crore. He also congratulated the NRI Centre for holding the workshop. (NT)

STRUCK OFF FROM MEDICLAIM LIST: The recognition granted to D Balabhai
Nanavati Hospital, Mumbai for the purpose of availing super specialized
treatment which are not available in the Goa Medical College and Hospital,
Bambolim, is withdrawn with immediate effect, states a press note issued by
the Department of Information. (GT)

CM NOT AVAILABLE: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar will not be available to
the public today (December 13). Those who wish to send birthday greeting to
the Chief Minister may do so by sending donations to the Chief Minister's
relief Fund through crossed cheques, a DI press note stated. (GT)

ANTARCTICA EXPEDITION LAUNCHED: There is a critical need to study and
understand the cryosphere of Antarctica for any meaningful prognostication
of the future global climate change, said Dr Satish Shetye, Director,
National Institute of Oceanography, recently, while delivering the keynote
address at the launching of the XXIV Indian Scientific Expedition to
Antarctica. (GT)

RESIDENTS OPPOSE: The Pernem residents' meeting convened by Pernem Nagrik
Kriti Samiti, in a resolution unanimously protested against the reserving
Pernem as reserved constituency for scheduled caste arguing that the SC
population is less compared to Mapusa constituency. (NT)

FATALLY KNOCKED DOWN: Marcus Caitan Fernandes, a 60-year-old man from
Carrascovaddo, Mapusa, was killed on December 12 morning, after he was
knocked down by a car on the National Highway, near Peddem. Marcus was
proceeding to church to attend the mass at around 6.30 am when he was
knocked down. (H)

MISSING MAN'S BODY FOUND: The body of Luciano Menezes (58), Sucaldem,
Chinchinim, who had been missing since December 10, was found floating in
the pond, in which he had gone for fishing. Margao Fire Brigade personnel
had unsuccessfully searched the entire stretch of the pond. (GT)

TIATR FRATERNITY SHOCKED: The sudden demise of saxophonist Joe (Juju)
Fernandes on December 9, following a heart attach while he was performing at
a restaurant in Raia, has stunned the tiatr fraternity and the tiatr lovers,
who have paid rich tributes to the departed soul. (H)

DR JORGE LOBO'S DEATH CONDOLED: The Rotary Club of Panaji condoled the death
of its former president and Rotary District Governor of, Dr Jorge Ataide
Lobo who passed away at Oeiras, Portugal, on 3 December. He was 84. (GT)

FATE OF "RIVER PRINCESS": The countdown to tow away the grounded "MV River
Princess", by early January 2005, is fast approaching.If Chief Minister
Parrikar could stage the IFFI in six months, one fails to understand the
reason for the prolonged delay of four years in re-floating and towing the

FLUTE CONCERT: The Performing Arts Club, Government College, Sanquelim, will
organize an Indian classical flute concert of renowned artiste Ronu
Majumdar, at the college premises on 16 December at 4.30 pm.

SANGEET SAMRAAT AWARD: The Samraat Sangeet Academy will present its
triennial 'Sangeet Samraat' award to the sitar maestro, Pt Ravi Shankar, on
December 19, on the concluding day of the Silver jubilee Samraat Sangeet
Sammelan at Kavlem, Ponda. The award consists of Rs.2 lakh and a memento.

EXHIBITION OF PAINTINGS: "Golden Goa", an exhibition of paintings of A Hamid
and Shareka Farooqi is being held at the Alliance Francaise gallery at
Miramar, from 9 am to 1 pm and from 3 to 5.30 pm. The expo will be on till
31 December.

SECOND MOST ATTRACTIVE INVESTMENT DESTINATION: Observing that India was on
the verge of becoming an economic superpower, Japanese Ambassador in India
Yasukuni Enoki said the country is the second most attractive destination
after China for Japanese businessmen interested in long term investment.
