GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 13 Sep 2003 ACCUSED IN ANMOD MURDER CASE CONVICTED: District and Sessions Court in Margao convicted two of the three accused in the Vinit Bindal murder case at Anmod Ghat in 1998. According to the prosecution, on 29 March 1998, accused Suresh Nayar (Karnataka), Wilson Agnel Fernandes and Videsh Malwankar (both from Nerul), brutally assaulted Vinit Bindal and his driver Maruti Laxman Jadhav and fled from the scene presuming them to be dead. But Jadhav survived the assault to recount the tale. Judge Nelson Britto yesterday convicted Suresh and Wilson while acquitting Videsh. (GT)

The police arrested Vasant Khyani and Mohammad Ali Sheikh when they were accepting matka bets in a room behind Wellgroom haircutting salon in Panjim. (H) 'PITRA PAKSH' SEASON BEGINS: The most inauspicious period in the Hindu calendar has commenced. Popularly known as the "Shraddh" season or the "Pitra Paksh" which follows Ganesh Chaturthi, began this year on 11 September and will end on 26 September. The Hindu community is accustomed to feeding the dead among their close relatives once a year in accordance with the Saka (Hindu calendar) as a mark of respect to the departed soul. This custom is generally referred to as the "Shraddh". (GT) TREAT ENTIRE PARRA AS RURAL: Saligao MLA Dr Wilfred D'Souza said that Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd has classified a certain portion of Parra village as urban area, while other areas in the village have been classified as rural. Residents of the urban area of Parra are being charged monthly telephone rentals of Rs.250, while residents of those areas of Parra classified as rural are paying monthly rentals of Rs.110, observed Dr Willy. "Hence to remove this disparity in monthly rentals, BSNL authorities should classify the entire Parra village as rural area," Dr Willy added.
