GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 16 February 2004 GOVT URGED TO PROVIDE AID TO KONKANI FILMS: The 24th session of the All India Konkani Parishad, which concluded at Calicut in Kerala yesterday, demanded that the Goa government should provide financial assistance to produce films in Konkani in view of Goa being selected as a permanent venue for holding the International Film Festival in India. The 3-day conference held under the presidentship of Mr Basti Vaman Shenoi ended this evening by adopting several resolutions in an open session. Many delegates from several states expressed their happiness over Goa being selected as the permanent venue for the IFFI and expressed the need for producing quality films in Konkani. The Parishad also demanded that the Goa government should strictly implement the Goa Official Language Act in the state administration. (NT)
CM BARES RS 50 CRORE IFFI PLAN: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar unveiled a Rs 50-crore plan that seeks to virtually change the face of the city's riverfront, ahead of International Film Festival of India (IFFI) December deadline. The plan, primarily aimed at four-laning and aesthetically beautifying the D B Bandodkar road from the KTC bus-stand to Dona Paula jetty, involves extending the road by upto 14 metres into the river for a 350-metre stretch, Mr Parrikar said. It will be done by building another approximately 350 metre long 'Patto' bridge alongside the existing one and does not involve any reclamation, he said. Local architects have been selected to provided sketches and the plans to develop the promenade along the sea/river-front, he added. He said, architect Rita Mody Joshi has been allotted the stretch between Hotel Mandovi and the Pergola, while Architect Raya Shankwalker will conceptualise the promenade for the stretch between the Pergola right up to Kala Academy. Noted architect, Dean D'Cruz, will prepare the plans and oversee the works pertaining to the stretch from Kala Academy to Miramar circle and Architect Arminio Ribeiro has been entrusted the task for the stretch from Miramar circle upto the NIO circle. (H) BUDGET SESSION: A week-long budget session of the state legislative assembly begins today with the Governor, Mr Kidar Nath Sahani addressing the House at 2.30 p.m. The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, who is also the Finance Minister, will present the state budget 2004-2005 on February 18 before the House. The government has given notice for introducing nine bills, which includes Goa Mundkars' (Protection from Eviction) (Amendment) Bill, 2004 and Goa Medical Practitioners' Bill during the 5-day session. Members have submitted their questions and also resolutions. Mr Parrikar had recently said that his government would take a vote on account and pass the budget during the monsoon session in view of the parliamentary elections. The other bills includes Goa Co-operative Societies (Amendment) Bill, City of Panaji Corporation (Amendment) Bill, Goa Educational Development Corporation (Amendment) Bill, Goa Labour Welfare Fund Bill, Goa Civil Code (Amendment) Bill and other. The Opposition Congress has given a notice of no-confidence motion against the Speaker last week. (NT) IVAR REFUTES CHARGES: Mr Ivar Fjeld, member of the press club in the Norwegian parliament, said that the case filed against him was false and baseless and aimed at harassing him to withdraw his complaint against Mr Aires Rodrigues. In a statement he said Mr Feliciano D'Souza filed the case against him in the Juridical Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Panaji as Mr Aires Rodrigues was his lawyer. (NT) MAN COMMITS SUICIDE: A 37-year-old person committed suicide by hanging himself to a tree right in front of his house with the help of a shawl when the inmates of the house were fast asleep. The incident occurred yesterday night at Mestawada-Curti, Ponda. The police further informed that, Mr Manoj Kumar Shukla, hailing from Uttar Pradesh was employed with Mayur Transport Company located at Ponda. The deceased had locked the door of the house before taking the extreme step. (NT) WIFE GETS JUDICIAL CUSTODY FOR HUSBAND'S MURDER: Angela Diniz, arrested by Quepem police in connection with the alleged murder of her husband, was produced yesterday before Judicial Magistrate First Class and 14-day remand was taken. The deceased's son, who was arrested in connection with the case has been sent to Apna Ghar, said police. Police said that Floriano Diniz was murdered by his wife. Second post-mortem report received by police conducted by a team of three doctors has indicated 56 internal injuries on the body of deceased Floriano Diniz, while earlier post-mortem conducted on December 17 had indicated 22 injuries. (NT) SERULA GAUNKARS TO TACKLE MENACE OF ENCROACHMENTS: Large number of encroachments on prime tracts of land belonging to Serula Comunidade has been decried by the Serula Comunidade Gaunkars Association, which will shortly convene a meeting to decide the plan of action in tackling the menace. (GT) HOUSEWIFE MISSING: A 30-year old housewife from Carmona has been reported missing from her residence since February 10. According to the Colva police the lady was wearing brown coloured pants and a white blouse. Her husband has lodged a missing report giving detailed description. The police have flashed wireless messages across the state and are yet to trace her whereabouts. (NT) LATE JOAO FERNANDES WILL BE GIVEN RECOGNITION: "Late Joao Agostinho Fernandes will be given due recognition by the government of Goa" stated Mr Manohar Parrikar, Chief Minister of Goa, while addressing a houseful audience during the inaugural function of Kala Mogi's Tiatr Festival yesterday, at Kala Academy, Panaji. The Chief Minister was reacting to the suggestion put forth by Mr Tomazinho Cardozo, President of Kala Mogi, Candolim, in his welcome speech, that the Tiatr being the most popular dramatic form of Goa, late Joao Agostinho Fernandes, known as the "Father of Tiatr" due to his invaluable contribution to the tiatr stage 100 years back, should be remembered by posterity by naming the Open Air Theatre of Kala Academy as Joao Agostinho Fernandes Open Air Theatre. Mr Parrikar informed that many Ravindra Bhavans are being constructed by the government and hinted that a Ravindra Bhavan, instead of Kala Academy's Open Air Theatre, will be named after Late Joao Agostinho Fernandes, the "Father of Tiatr". (NT) BEGGING DOWN BY 25 %: With the implementation of Goa Prevention of Begging Act by the south Goa police, activities of organised gangs engaged in forcing begging in public places has reduced considerably. The police claim that during the last three years cases under the Beggars Acts has come down by 25 per cent and beggars started vanishing from Margao and other parts of south Goa. In the year 2003, in all 106 beggars were booked under prevention of Begging Act 1972 in Margao, the police informed. A survey conducted by the police has revealed that begging in the city has been brought under control however, begging continues on occasion such as zatras and other festivals held in villages. (NT) HOUSEWIFE HELD FOR THEFT OF GOLD ORNAMENTS: The Margao police have arrested a woman in connection with a theft case reported at Fatorda. The Margao police inspector, Mr Prabodh Shirvoiker said that an offence under Section 380 of IPC and 504 and 506 (II) has been registered and a housewife named Nisha involved in the offence has been arrested. Police said that as per the complainant, last year some gold ornaments were missing from the house of Ms Vishranti Raiker of Fatorda. It reported that the firm "is exploring the idea of a management contract or a partnership deal for its plans of a hotel foray in Goa" and added the company feels "that with tourism and charter demands showing an upswing, the time is now right for such a venture". Ashwini Kakkar, CEO and managing director, Thomas Cook (India), was quoted as telling 'Financial Express' that the company was interested in setting up a medium-sized hotel in Goa and was exploring the idea. Some 20 persons have already closed shop while others have increased the price of pao from one rupee to Rs 2. (H) BODY FISHED OUT FROM CHAPORA RIVER: The body of a 35-year-old youth from Morjim was fished out from the Chapora river at Kanaikwada-Morjim on Sunday evening. According to reports, Rajan Yeshwant Phadte (35) resident of Morjim, was missing since from Saturday night. On Sunday afternoon, some of the villagers identified his body floating on the banks of Chapora river. Pernem police have registered a case of unnatural death.
