GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 17 Dec 2003 CM ANNOUNCES DEVELOPMENT PLANS: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar stated that the problems faced by the Mapusa town like the disposal of garbage, parking, sewage, etc would be solved in the near future. The government has now decided to dump garbage at mining areas in Bicholim and Pernem talukas, where the composting process would be also undertaken, since the Curca site was found to be inadequate. A proposed 430-bed hospital project planned at Peddem, Mapusa, costing about Rs.48 to Rs.50 crore will be tendered in February next year, Parrikar announced. Asked about the sewage system for Mapusa town, he said that the project will be taken up after the completion of projects in Panaji, Vasco and Margao. The chief minister also promised at least 12-hour water supply daily to Mapusa. A vegetable market will be constructed by the State Urban Development Authority. (GT) CLEAN AND GREEN MARGAO: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on December 16 made two big promises for Margao city. First, a recreation project comprising an artificial lake and secondly, to complete the ambitious but long-delayed Margao sewerage project within the next 18 months. (H) KTC TO REDUCE 'LIFE' OF BUSES: While the Kadamba Transport Corporation seems to have already complied with the government's latest decision to scrap public transport vehicles aged 20 years and above, the Corporation is now moving a step ahead in working towards reducing the average life of vehicles to 4.5 years by 2005. This is being done in a bid to declare KTC transport services as a fuel efficient and a safe mode of transportation. (H) NARVEKAR BLAMES IT ON VINDICTIVENESS: The president of the Goa Cricket Association, Mr Dayanand Narvekar, yesterday blamed "political vindictiveness" of the government and a "biased attitude" of the one-man Pendse Commission for his indictment in the latter's report released by the government. (NT) TO 'RETIRE' AFTER 25: While all public transport vehicles aged 20 and above will be off the roads in Goa from January 1, 2004, the Kadamba Transport Corporation's 23-year-old and premier vehicle, GDX-1, will get a lease of life and have a special role to play for two more years. (H) GOVT READY TO ELEVATE MARGAO INTO CORPORATION: Has the government drawn up plans to upgrade the Margao Municipal Council into a Corporation? When the question was posed to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and his second-in-command and Urban Development Minister, Digambar Kamat, both gave varied answers. "The government is ready to accord the status if the people ask for," remarked the Chief Minister. Digambar Kamat, however, said "for the moment, nothing has been decided". (H) WOMAN COMMITS SUICIDE: Rukhsana Shaikh, 21, a resident of Chimbel committed suicide by hanging at her residence on Monday. Rukhsana was married about for years ago and has a three-year-old son. The reason why she took the drastic step is not yet known. (GT) FOREIGN EATERIES LEAVE BITTER AFTER-TASTE: Stung by the slump in their business, local persons running restaurants along the Anjuna-Vagator-Chapora belt in Bardez, are taking up cudgels against eateries run by foreigners. For the first time, the local restauranteurs in the belt have come together to form the Association of Anjuna, Vagator and Chapora, Restaurant, Bar and Shacks. (H) DUTCHMAN HELD WITH NARCOTICS: The Anti-Narcotic Police arrested frank Robert Nehl, a Dutch national, and recovered six grammes of charas from his possession, at a starred hotel at Miramar. (GT) KONKANI STORY IN BENGALI: A Konkan short story is among 13 selected nationally by the All India for conversion into plays in Bengali, according to writer Dr Olivinho Gomes. Prof Gomes' short story is entitled "Sort" (English version "The lottery ticket"). (H) DRUGS SEIZED: The Directorate of Food and Drugs Administration, in a drive to check the unauthorized sale of drugs, conducted raids in the beach areas in North Goa. During the raid, a huge cache of drugs like Ketamine injections, Silddenafil citrate, Valium-10 and Codeine tablets was found at the residence of a drug dealer in Anjuna. The cache was valued at Rs.68,000. (H) NOTICES TO THREE HOTELIERS: Bombay High Court at Goa has issued contempt notices to three hoteliers in the Arpora-Calangute coastal belt for violation of the noise pollution rules. (GT) 12,000 GOA JOBS LOST: Over 12,000 workers lost their jobs in the past three-and-a-half years as several industrial units have downed their shutters in Goa, some without paying the legal dues to their workmen, according to the All India Trade Union Congress general secretary Christopher Fonseca. He said the working class is adversely hit by the wide-spread closures, retrenchments and VRS in the last 3-4 years. (H) PROPERTY DESTROYED IN FIRE: A residential house caught fire at Saligao early morning on December 16, resulting into destruction of property worth Rs.80,000. At 5.45 am a fire call was received by the police control room, Panaji, from Newton D'Souza, resident from Cruzvaddo, Saligao. The cause of fire was reported to be due to electric short-circuit and LPG gas blast. (NT) OPPOSITION TO PAY PARKING: Margao Seva Association has strongly opposed the Pay Parking Scheme of Margao Municipal Council on the grounds that the same amounts to illegal extortion, is irrational and confusing, and hence have demanded withdrawal of the public notice given in this regard.
