GIDC POURS DOWN 4.43 CR IN LOSSES ON WATER TO UNITS: Goa Industrial
development Corporation sustained a heavy loss of Rs.4.34 crore on
distribution of water to industrial units during 1999-2003 while no efforts
were initiated to curb the drain of funds. The various acts of omission and
commission have been set out in detail in the latest report of Comptroller
and Auditor General of India for the year ended 31 March 2003. The report
was presented in the Goa Assembly on January 14. (GT)

CORRUPTION, LAWLESSNESS, GROSS INDISCIPLINE: If one were to go by the number
of Departmental Enquiries ordered against its personnel, as stated by the
Home Department in the recently concluded Assembly session, the State Police
Department's lack of credibility seems justifiable. The documents provided
in the Assembly tell a sordid tale of corruption, lawlessness and gross
indiscipline that shows the state's law enforcement authority in poor light.

AIDS CONTROL SOCIETY FAILED: From coastal zones to hinterland, the rate of
growth of AIDS in Goa has gone up by 12 per cent in Goa in comparison to
2003. But the Goa State AIDS Control Society has not succeeded in
implementing "Inter-Sectoral Collaboration', a programme for sharing in work
of creating awareness, advocacy by various sectors of the society. The
report of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, underlined that out
of the five key components of the programme, the GSACS has not implemented
"Inter-Sectoral Collaboration". (NT)

FARM SECTOR PRODUCE DECLINING: Despite persistent rebuttals from official
quarters, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India has confirmed that
production of paddy, raggi, pulses, oilseeds, sugarcane, cashew, coconut and
vegetables "significantly declined" during 2000-03. (H)

MGP TO MEET JAMIR: Days after its lone legislator, Ramkrishna (Sudhin)
Dhavlikar, supported the controversial amendment to the Goa Members of
Legislative Assembly (Removal of Disqualification) Act, the Maharashtrawadi
Gomantak Party, on Sunday said it would request the Governor, SC Jamir, not
grant it his assent. (H)

'BEST STATE OF THE STATES': The pavilion displayed by the department of
Science, Technology and Environment, Government of Goa at the 92nd session
of the Indian Science Congress held at Nirma University, Ahmedabad, Gujarat,
from 3rd to 7th January 2005, has won the prestigious "Best State of the
states" award. The State of Goa had participated in the "Pride of India"
Science Expo along with other states under the theme 'Health Technologies as
the Fulcrum for Development of the Nation'. The Goa pavilion attracted a
large number of enthusiasts comprising of scientists, doctors, students,
teachers and the general public. This is the second consecutive year for Goa
to win an award at the ISC. (GT)

BLOWS TRADED AT AUCTION: While an auction for the usufructuary right of
cashew plantation was being held in the premises of Kalika Devasthan in
Kansarpal, a mob of around 250 persons arrived on the scene and went on a
rampage, attacking some persons and ransacking the place. (GT)

SCARCE WATER IN PORVORIM: The residents of Porvorim have been facing an
acute water shortage and the Porvorim residents Welfare Association have
threatened to approach the High Court with a Public Interest Petition in
case there was no improvement in the situation. (H)

DELIBERATION ON LITERATURE: "Culture, tradition, health, portray the
mentality of human beings. Against this background, literature needs to be
read since it enriches the reader about the various aspects of a human being
's existence," said Prof Madhu Jamkar on January 16 - the penultimate day of
the Samarasata Sahitya Sammelan held at the Kala Academy. (GT)

COPS RECOVER BODY: Colva police have recovered the body of one Ivan Robert,
a resident of Mumbai. The body was found lying in a hut near a restaurant at
Benaulim. (GT)

MINISTER WARN PHIL CORPN: Labour Minister Dr Suresh Amonkar warned that the
government would initiate stringent action under the provision of the
Industrial Disputes Act, 1946, if they tried to take recourse to illegal
retrenchment. Dr Amonkar was replying to a calling attention notice in the
Assembly on January 13. (GT)

"RIVER PRINCESS": Tourism Minister Matanhy Saldanha on Friday denied any
illegal activities of cutting and breaking of grounded river Princess at
Sinquerim and said that the government had appointed private security
personnel on the vessel. He was replying to an urgent important matter
raiser by Calangute MLA Agnelo Fernandes in the Legislative Assembly. (GT)

THOUSANDS THRONG SANCOALE: Thousands of devotees from different parts of Goa
thronged at Sancoale on January 16 for the annual feast of the Patron Saint
of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman, Blessed Joseph Vaz. The day also marked
the 294th death anniversary of the 18th century Goan missionary who died in

KONKANI TELEFILM: Panjim Doordarshan is producing anew Konkani telefilm
titled "Sukacho Sod", written by Prof Milind Mhadgut and sponsored by
Vighnesh Productions, Ponda. The best actress award winner in the lat State
film festival, Ms Amita Salatry, and Prof Milind Mhadgut are the main cast

BSNL TO INCREASE PHONE USAGE: Soon after setting up high speed broad-band
connectivity that would soon envelop the country. Bharat Sanchar Nigam
Limited is now eyeing a subscriber base of 250 million for its telephones
which would translate into an expenditure of Rs.25,000 crore. (GT)

PANJIM CARNIVAL: Panjim Festival and Carnival Committee will organize the
Carnival from February 5 to 8. The King Momo's parade will be held on
February 5. There will be six categories of floats namely: sponsored
club/institutions, traditional, family, fun junk car, clowns/jokers.There
will also be mini Carnival which will be held from February 6 to 8 at the

VCD SHOCKING: The executive committee of the Catholics Association of Goa
has said that the VCD on Goa's freedom struggle was shocking. The CAG feels
that the conversions as depicted in the VCD had nothing to do with the
liberation movement of Goa, says a press note. (H)

EXHIBITION OF PAINTINGS: 'The Apostle of Art', an exhibition of painting
works by the internationally acclaimed Goan artist late Vishwanath
Nageshkar, will be inaugurated at the Kala Academy on January 17. The
exhibition organized jointly by the Nageshkar family and Kala Academy, will
be inaugurated by distinguished artist, Prafulla Dahanukar.

FREEDOM FIGHTER DEAD: Freedom fighter Narendra Hegde Dessai of Quepem died
following a heart attack at his resident on January 14. He was 75.

PHD FOR FILIPE: Mr Filipe Rodrigues e Melo, head of the Commerce Department,
Rosary College, Navelim, has been awarded PhD by the Karnataka University,
Dharwad, on the topic "Tourism Development in Goa with Special reference to
Goa Tourism Development Corporation". (H)

'BEST SCIENTIFIC PAPER': Dr Ryan Alberto has been conferred the best
'Scientific Paper' award at the 19th Federation of Operative Dentistry and
12th Indian Endodontic Society Conference held in Bangalore between 7th and
9th January 2005. The paper titled "management of traumatic Injuries to
teeth: A Conservative Approach", highlighted various traumatic dental
injuries and their management to restore back the patients aesthetics in a
short period of time. Dr Ryan is the son of Dr Vasco and Lisette Alberto of
