14 DIE IN KRC TRAGEDY REPEAT: In the second major accident on the Konkan
railway in less than a year, 14 people were killed and about 62 injured when
a speeding Mumbai-bound Matsyagandha Express from Mangalore derailed after
hitting boulders on the tracks over a bridge at 6.08 am on June 17, between
Karanjadi and Veer near Roha in Raighad district of Maharashtra, about 200
km from Mumbai. Seventeen of the injured had boarded the train at stations
in Goa. (GT)

TWO GOANS IN INJURED LIST: Konkan Railway Corporation has said that two
persons - Ramesh Bandi (22) and Umaar (38) - who reportedly hailed from Goa,
were amongst the list of injured passengers in the Matsyagandha train
tragedy. KRC Managing Director, Baba Ghagte, however, said there's no news
till late this evening whether any Goan was killed in Wednesday's rail
accident. (H)

SAFETY MEASURES A BIG LET DOWN: Despite the much-publicised claim of the
Konkan Railway of investing Rs.60 crore in safety works in the first phase
of its project, over 60 passengers have lost their lives in the last two
years following major mishaps on the 760-km long Konkan route. (GT)

"GROUND REALITIES NEGLECTED": Recurring cases of landslides on the tracks of
Konkan Railway are the result of insufficient information about the
topography and a shallow geological survey, hence there is a possibility
that these accidents and loss of human life will continue unless the Konkan
Railway Corporation rectifies that. According to two engineering geologists,
Dr RB Gupte and Dr BM Karmarkar, who have specialized on Deccan Trap and
contributed to the landslide control in Borghat and Mumbai-based expressway.

BUSES MAKE A FAST BUCK: Rail traffic on the Konkan Railway route was
disrupted on Wednesday as the authorities cancelled several trains and
diverted a number of long-distance trains in the wake of the train tragedy.
Stranded passengers had to depend on road transport and reports said some
Mumbai bus operators made hay by selling tickets at a premium in view of the
heavy rush of passengers. (H)

CAR STEREO THIEVES: A gang of thieves stole as many as 15 car stereos in a
single night from vehicles parked in Miramar's Beach Nest apartments, Lake
View areas, besides the Martins Enclave in Caranzalem and near the
Government Quarters at St Inez-Tonca. Interestingly among the many victims
also figures the name of a former Goa police chief - DA Prabhudesai. (H)

DIESEL, PETROL PRICES UP: Consequent upon the hike in retail prices of motor
spirit (petrol) and high-speed diesel, the new rates announced for these
products in the State are: petrol will cost Rs.35.61 per litre instead of
Rs.33.62. High speed diesel will now be sold at Rs.23.73 per litre in Panaji
in place of the existing rate of Rs.22.68. (GT)

UNCLAIMED HIV+ BODIES: The number of bodies of HIV positive persons lying
unclaimed at the morgue are mounting in number, some dating back to February
of this year. However, the GMC cannot dispose of them without police
authorization, which the Goa State AIDS Control Society washes its hands off
this problem. (H)

CORTALIM LOCAL KILLED IN MISHAP: One John Paul Coutinho, a resident of
Cortalim, was killed in a road accident at Sancoale on June 16. Coutinho
(32) was traveling in his Maruti van when a Qualis jeep dashed against his
vehicle. (H)

Socorro panchayat, defeating her opponent Anand Manjrekar by a margin of
three votes. The post of sarpanch fell vacant due to the resignation of
ex-sarpanch Sarvesh Naik. (H)

JOSEPHINA BARBOSA (50) from Raia-Manora met with a tragic death as a coconut
tree fell on her while she was working in the paddy fields. (H)

CYCLIST KILLED: Heavy rains and strong winds claimed the life of Uday
Gaonkar on Monday when a larger tree got uprooted and came crashing down the
28-year-old cyclist. (H)

WOMAN HANGS TO DEATH: Gulabi Anand Dhond, a 50-year-old woman from
Talpan-Shiroda, committed suicide by hanging herself to the roof of her
house. Gulabi had lost her husband two months ago. (H)

INCESSANT RAINS coupled with cyclonic winds during the last 24 hours caused
uprooting of trees, destruction to property and disruption of power supply
and traffic in many parts of the State. (H)

JOSHI ESCAPES UNHURT: Mr Prashant Joshi, an industrialist from Vasco, had a
miraculous escape when a huge Ashoka tree fell on his car near the UTI Bank
on Swatantra Path on June 16 afternoon. Mr Joshi had left the car seconds
before the incident. The car was badly damaged in the accident. (NT)

POWER BREAKDOWNS has become a common feature for the hapless residents of
Majorda this monsoon. The situation is learnt to have come to such a pass
that one cannot guarantee restoration of power supply immediately, plunging
many a homes in darkness. (H)

LESS WATER: Due to frequent power interruption at Pococem and Assonora water
treatment plants, there will be restricted water supply to entire Bardez and
Bicholim talukas till power improves. (H)

ARCHITECTURE EXPO: An exhibition of projects of the winners of the Architect
of the Year Awards for 2001-02 will be held on June 18-19 at the Clube Vasco
da Gama, Panjim. The exhibition is jointly organised by the Goa Chapter of
the IIA, the Goa College of Architecture and the AYA. Sarto Almeida, who was
one of the jurors for these awards, will explain in brief the highlights of
the winning entries on June 18 at 6.30 pm. (H)

BAINA RESIDENTS FILE COMPENSATION CLAIMS: Day three after the historic
demolition in the red-light area at Baina saw displaced residents collecting
their leftovers, even as the office of the Mamlatdar has been flooded with
applications for compensation. Mormugao Mamlatdar on Wednesday evening said
that his office received 211 applications on the first day itself. (H)

FEAR OF RETURN OF SEX WORKERS: Though the State administration has cracked
down upon the red-light area at Baina and demolished the sex workers'
cubicles, there is a doubt whether this has actually eliminated the flesh
trade plaguing Vasco. The local people now fear that the sex workers may
disperse throughout the State. (NT)

STAY AWAY FROM AERATED DRINKS': Stating that Goa has the highest per capita
consumption of soft drinks in the country, Rajiv Dixit of Azadi Bachav
Andolan has appealed to the people to boycott these drinks. Alumni of IIT
Kanpur, Dixit who is a scientist, stated yesterday that aerated soft drinks
are injurious to health."Why has the Indian farmer to pay tax and cost on
water when giant multinationals like Pepsi and Coke are given tax-free and
cost-free water to manufacture soft drinks?" he questioned. He stated that
in 18 states in India, Coke and Pepsi were sold tax free while sales tax is
levied on milk, butter, bread and biscuits. (GT)

NOISE POLLUTION CONTROL: The Government will frame a new scheme to ensure
observance of the Noise Rules within a month - a tacit admission that the
present scheme of controlling noise pollution through complaints lodged at
the respective police stations is a failure. (H)

EXPOSITION: SPECIAL FERRIES LIKELY: Inland waterway transport from various
ferry points crossing to Old Goa would be introduced to ferry pilgrims
during the period of the 16th Exposition of the sacred relics of St Francis
Xavier scheduled to be held in Goa from November 21 to January 2, 2005.
Meanwhile the subcommittee constituted to look into arrangements for
accommodation to meet demands of low income pilgrims, has identified several
schools and sites for setting up camps to accommodate about 10,000 pilgrims
in Old Goa and the neighbouring villages. (H)

"GIVE US OUR DAILY LIGHT": Considered a land of sunshine, beaches and
beauty, Goa is living under dark clouds. And that fallacy is the pathetic
electricity supply that the citizens of Goa have to endure. What is even
more shocking is that while the government talks of holding international
festivals in Goa and making a permanent site for such festivals, residents
of certain villages do not receive electricity for days on end. (Edit in
Herald)
