It was only on the intervention of an NGO that the mother reluctantly agreed to lodge a First Information Report. (GT) ANOTHER LEOPARD TRAPPED IN CHINCHINIM: The whole of New Durga in Chinchinim was in a celebratory mood on November 16 morning after a second leopard (5-year-old), this time a female, was trapped just 100 metres away from where a male was netted exactly a week ago. The trap was set behind Emilia Pereira's house at Sand Modi. Emilia had lost her pet dog and several pigs to the wild cat, while Mafaldina Sequeira said that the animal took away 14 of her pigs and one cat.Once again, it was the soft-spoken Sainath Shirodkar, animal attendant from the Campal Range Forest Office, who did the animal in with his experience of setting traps. (GT) UNFAZED KANTH: Unfazed by the happenings during his absence in Goa, Director General of Police Amod Kanth, on November 16, attended office and presided over a crime review meeting of the entire top brass, including officers in-charge of police stations.In the fortnight that he was away, the Manohar Parrikar-led cabinet in Goa passed a decision to hold the post of GDP Goa "in abeyance" and wrote to the Centre to down-grade the post of the Goa police chief to the rank of Inspector General of Police. A serious view is being taken of this issue following two fatal accidents in the last two days wherein the police have found that the driver of the ill-fated bus in the Colvale accident was over-burdened with work. (H) STOP THE KILLING ON ROADS: NCP: The Nationalist Congress Party has called for the government's intervention to arrest road mishaps in the State before Goan roads are termed as "killer roads" like Goa's "killer beaches". NCP spokesman Surendra Furtado said that Sunday's devastating tragedy in which two Pune-based families were killed in an accident at Colvale, ought to galvanise the authorities into action, vis-à-vis safety on roads. The Salcete BDO has intimated the Director of Panchayats about the need to fill the vacant post. (H) SPECIAL FERRIES, TRAINS DURING EXPOSITION: In order to avoid congestion of traffic on the Panaji-Old Goa road during the Exposition of the sacred relics of St Francis Xavier, the government will introduce launches, ferries from Panaji jetty to Old Goa and vice versa. From 5 am to 3 pm, the ferries will leave from Panaji every hour. The Konkan Railway Corporation will also run added rail service during the Exposition period. A DMU service will leave Karwar at 6 am and arrive at Margao at 7.10 am. (GT) CATHOLIC ENQUIRY CENTRE: Archbishop Felipe Neri Ferrao inaugurated the Catholic Enquiry Centre and Exposition Office at Old Goa, on November 16. Both offices are located in the Bom Jesus Basilica's campus and housed in the same building. (H) PLIGHT OF BAINA DISPLACED: Karnataka Industries Minister PGR Sindhia along with a delegation of leaders is expected to visit Goa again to study the plight of Kannadiga families displaced from the Baina beach in Vasco and to enquire if the Goan government has taken necessary steps to rehabilitate the families. The existing crematorium is at a hillock at Pomburba and as there is no motorable road, it causes problems cremation. (H) COMMERCIAL COMPLEX FOR VASCO: Plans are afoot to construct a commercial complex in the existing municipal market by the Mormugao Municipal Council. (NT) MOLESTATION: A British national has lodged a complaint with the Anjuna police stating that one Baba allegedly molested her by touching her without her consent. The victim is presently staying in a hotel at Vagator. (NT) KRC REMOVES ILL-FATED SKY BUS COACH: Nearly 52 days after the unfortunate incident brought all trials of the Sky Bus to a halt, the Konkan Railway Corporation detached the ill-fated coach from the test rail track on November 16 and lifted it away to the coach manufacturing unit at Pilerne. The move indicates that the KRC is planning to place a steel coach on the test track, before deciding to undertake further testing of the indigenous technology. (H) LIVE TELECAST ON EXPOSITION: The opening ceremony of the Exposition of the sacred relics of St Francis Xavier on November 21 will be telecast live by Doordarshan. DD will beam the entire inaugural ceremony from morning to noon at all its stations all over the country, on its News channel. (H) ROSARY CONVENT IS 50: Our Lady of Rosary Covent and School, Dona Paula, is all set to celebrate the golden jubilee of its establishment in Goa. A grand celebration will be held on 20 and 21 December 2004. (GT) HIKE TO TUDOV WATERFALL: The Goa Hiking Association will organise a one-day hike to Tudov Waterfall in Netravali, Sanguem, on 21 November. The Tudov Waterfall is surrounded by rolling green hills. It's fall is from a height of 50 mtrs. The 6-km track through the boulders provides a exhilarating panoramic view. (GT) NAVELIM CHURCH: Passers-by on the national highway are impressed by this imposing laterite, white-washed edifice, a tribute erected by its numerous devotees down the centuries to its patroness, the Blessed Virgin Mother of the Rosary. The magnificent edifice is located about 2 km south of Margao city. The Marathas in April 1717 and in January 1739 ransacked the church, reportedly built on the remains of a temple, according to historical records. (GT) ARE WE READY: Lakhs of tourists will descend on Goa either with religious fervour in their hearts for the Exposition or to watch the stars during IFFI. But the big question is "are we ready?" .Already foreigners have started descending on to Goa. We can see them roaming the streets, half naked and zooming around the roads without care for the ordinary man. What are the police doing? Why are they allowing them to ride on the roads sans helmets? Are they so special that they cannot abide by the law of the land?
