GOA APPROPRIATION BILL PASSED: The Goa Assembly yesterday passed the Goa Appropriation Bill, 2004, which provides the appropriation of over Rs.365.48 crore out of the Consolidated Fund of Goa to meet the expenditure on certain services granted by the Assembly, for those services.Parrikar said that the financial management of the State was one of the best in the country and that the Finance Commission had recently rated Goa as the best fiscal management State. (GT) MONTE CRUZ EYES SOUTH GOA SEAT: If Kingfisher's "King of Good Times" and Janata Party's leader Vijay Mallya has set his eyes on the two Lok Sabha seats in Goa, "Belo's King" and former Sports Minister, Monte Cruz has finally made up his mind to throw his hat in the ring. "It's only a matter of time before the United Goans Democratic Party declares my candidate," he told Herald on February 17. (H) FOOTBALL FIXING: GFA FAVOURS LIFE BAN: Taking serious view of match-fixing controversy that rocked Goan football on Monday, the Goa Football Association on 16 Feb slapped a one-year suspension on the clubs, team officials and players. Curtorim Gymkhana, Sangolda Lightning, Wilfred Leisure and Dona Paula will now be suspended till the general body decides their fate at the AGM on 18 July. Savio Messias, the secretary of the GFA, told Gomantak Times, that the executive committee acted as per the FIFA guidelines, which stipulate life ban on all those involved in match-fixing. (GT) TEACHERS WARN OF STIR: The All Goa Secondary School Teachers Association on February 17 decided to serve an ultimatum on Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to forthwith settle all pending demands or face an intensified agitation. (H) WAR AGAINST MADKAI PROSTITUTION: Acting on GT story on prostitution at Madkai Industrial estate, the convenor of Parampai Citizens Forum, Sunil Shirodkar, has demanded immediate end to this activity. The GT story had pointed out to the widespread prostitution indulged by women of ill repute from Baina-Vasco at the Madkai Industrial Estate allegedly in connivance with the staff on duty at the industrial premises. According to Shirodkar, they (the women) come on Saturday, spend their weekend at Madkai and return to Baina on Monday. (GT) COST OF GOVT ADVISORS, OSDS: The State government appointed some 17 advisors/ consultants and officers on special duty from 2001 till date, all at handsome salaries and perks. Some of these advisers and OSDs were appointed at staggering salaries ranging between Rs.12,000 to Rs.50,000 per month. CM Parrikar gave this information in a written reply to an unstarred question raised by Ravi Naik in the Goa Assembly on February 17. (H) BED CATCHES FIRE, COUPLE INJURED: A burning mosquito coil proved disastrous for a couple from Nagarcem in Canacona, as the bed on which they were sleeping caught fire on account of the coil. Bimol Vishwas suffered 15 per cent injuries while his wife Renku sustained 65 per cent and is presently the GMC undergoing treatment. (GT) WHERE DOES GOA EARN MONEY FROM? Where does Goa earn its money from? Not mining, long considered the backbone of the local economy. There are no clear figures for tourism, which may be a big employer in certain villages of the coastal belt. This issue is still a mystery, going by figures emerging from the latest economic Survey presented in the Goa Assembly.The large tertiary-or service-sector, offering well over half of the State's recorded income, gives some clue of where the answer might lie. (H) 4,000 GAINED EMPLOYMENT: About 4,000 youth have gained permanent employment since the past three years after having been trained in pre-employment training under various categories by the stated government, said CM Manohar Parrikar in the Goa Assembly on 17 February. (GT) ABOUT "RIVER PRINCESS": The government has decided to invite open tenders within next three days for floating and towing the grounded vessel "River Princess", after three companies carried out inspection of the ship in December 2003 in preparation for bidding. The open tenders will be invited on the basis of International Salvage Agreement "Wreckfixed-99" after taking assistance from the Directorate General of Shipping in finalizing the terms and conditions of bid document. Tourism Minister Francisco Xavier Pacheco stated this in the Assembly on 17 February. (GT) MAG WELCOMED DECISION: The Motorcycle Action Group has welcomed the decision of the Goa government to keep in abeyance the move to enforce the helmet rule. MAG spokesman Adv Aires Rodrigues has, however, expressed the hope that the government decision is not a mere eyewash to appease the voters due to the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. (H) SAPECO TO BE REINSTATED: CM Parrikar yesterday stated that GMC, Bambolim, professor and head of the Department of Forensic Medicine, Dr Silvano Dias Sapeco, presently under suspension, would be reinstated within a fortnight. Parrikar told Saligao MLA, Dr Wilfred de Souza, that Dr Sapeco and a police officer were under suspension since the murder was converted into a suicide incident and it was difficult to find out who was at fault at that time. (GT) COPS WILL HAVE TO BE FIT ENOUGH: Physical fitness and the rate of crime detection will be two additional factors taken into cognizance while awarding promotions in police department in the future. CM Parrikar disclosed this while replying to a starred question tabled by Opposition MLAs. (GT) EXTRA FAST ATTACK CRAFT: The Vice Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshall M McMahon said that India had a rich maritime tradition dating back to several centuries, and befitting this heritage, naval planners had shown a foresight and had done well in supporting an indigenous warship programme for over three decades. He was addressing a gathering during the launching of the fourth Extra Fast Attack Craft, built by Goa Shipyard Ltd, Vasco. (NT) VILLAGE ECONOMY: Retention of jobs in traditional sectors like agriculture to sustain the village economy and arrest migration to urban areas by creating large-scale employment and boosting self-employment is part of the government's Employment Generation strategy. The government intends to pursue a three-pronged approach, in view of the past experience of two yeas, to make traditional sectors more remunerative, provide incentives like venture capital contribution to industries to employ more persons on a sustainable basis and encourage self-employment. (NT) DEMAND FOR ENTRY INTO SANCTUM SANCTORUM: Noted Konkani writer and leader of "Devlen Khuli Kara" (Open the sanctum-sanctorum of temples) movement N Shivdas strongly appealed to Hindu Saraswat Brahmins to allow non-Saraswat Hindus entry into the sanctum sanctorum of temples managed by Saraswat Hindus and including non-Saraswats as Mahajans of these temples. According to N Shivdas, although Mahashivratri is considered to be the most auspicious religious occasion of the Hindus, most Lord Shiva temples in Goa, including Mangeshi, Nageshi, Ramnathi and Saptkoteshwar have been debarring non-Saraswat Hindus from performing "Abhishekh" on the holy "Shivling". (GT) CALICUT GOANS AND THEIR METAL CRAFT: Fonseca, 50, recollects the day when as a young boy he traveled to Calicut on a country craft. It was back in the year 1908 that his father-in-law, LT Fernandes, established a metal business, which he presently runs successfully. Migratory people from Goa, who settled in Calicut (Kozhikode) in Kerala over 100 years back, took up the trade and became very successful. They dealt in copper, brass and jewelry. During the Portuguese regime, Goan people from Candolim, in Kozhikode, had the sole hold in the metal business. Goans from various parts of Bardez are settled in Calicut. The Saraswat Samaj members, who have their roots in Goa, are in the jewelry business in Calicut. Mrs Eleena R D'Souza of St Mary's Convent High School, Mapusa, submitted her research paper project on teaching the basic in Hindi grammar in an innovative way, for which she has been given a national award.
