TRAFFIC RESTORED ON KONKAN RAILWAY: Rail traffic on the Konkan Railway route
was restored yesterday to normal with four trains crossing the accident-hit
Veer-Karanjadi section near Mahad following track clearance, railway sources
said. (GT)

TWO SMALL BOULDERS.They were two small boulders, each one less than a meter
in diameter. It seemed unbelievable that they could cause the death of 14
persons. If only the iron netting covering the face of the hill along the
track had extended to these boulders, a few metres further, all the
passengers would have been alive and reached their destination happily.
(Reuven Proenca in GT)

SAFETY NET ON ALL ROCKS: As part of its multi-pronged safety measures,
Konkan Railway has decided to provide safety net on all rock slopes more
than five metres high, impose restriction of 75 km per hour on all the
trains, and deploy 600 patrolmen at all the vulnerable sections on the
760-km on round the clock basis. (NT)

DSS BENEFICIARIES: Seventy-one percent of the beneficiaries under the
Dayanand Social Security Scheme are genuine, while the rest are either
doubtful, bogus, expired, not found on the given address, or have migrated.
Of the total 40818 beneficiaries, only 28,979 fulfill all the criteria laid
down under the Rules. Since the commencement of the scheme in January 2002,
in all 56,871 beneficiaries have been paid Rs.45,60,91,660 under this
scheme. (GT)

GOA REVOLUTION DAY: Governor Kidar Nath Sahani has conveyed his greetings
and best wishes to the people of Goa on the occasion of Goa Revolution Day
today. (GT)

STATE TO HONOUR 58 FREEDOM FIGHTERS: June 18 has great importance in the
history of Goa's freedom struggle. It was on this day in 1946, Dr Ram
Manohar Lohia gave a call to the people of Goa to unite and fight against
the colonial regime. The clarion call given on this day from the city square
in Margao known as Lohia Maidan, gave fresh inspiration to the nationalist
and like-minded people to fight the colonial rule. The historic event on
June 18, 1946, was the beginning of a revolution, a revolution that
strengthened the freedom movement and gave a definite direction to Goa's
freedom struggle. June 18 is celebrated every year as Goa Revolution Day.
This year the State government will be honouring 58 freedom fighters on the
Goa Revolution Day at the hands of Governor Kidar Nath Sahani and Chief
Minister Manohar Parrikar. (H)

COUNCILLORS GET PAY HIKE: The State government has brought into effect a 50
per cent hike in the emoluments awarded to heads of municipal councils and
councilors in the State. Confirmed reports indicate that a chairperson/mayor
in the 'A' class municipal councils/ corporation will now receive an
emolument of Rs.4,500 as against the earlier amount of Rs.3,000 per month.
The heads of the councils in the 'B' and 'C' class will receive emoluments
to the tune of Rs.3,500 and Rs.3,000 respectively. (H)

VISHAL GOMANTAK: Ramdas Athavle, Lok Sabha MP and president of the
republican Party of India (RPI-Athavle), has decided to pursue the proposal
of Vishal Gomantak (Greater Goa), to merge some parts of the neighbouring
states into Goa. He said he would take the initiative to hold talks with
political parties in Goa as well as the State government. He said Belgaum
should also be divided into two based on the language spoken. (H)

CANCONKARS BLOW FUSE: Matters came to a boil yesterday as residents of
Canacona poured on to the streets and blocked the National Highway at
Nagarcem and Bhatpal protesting against the erratic power supply plaguing
the whole taluka for the last fifteen days. (GT)

LONG POWER CUTS: Trees falling on electricity lines due to gusty winds of
strong magnitude and technical difficulties faced on 400 KVA lines and
insulator failures have been the main reasons for the long duration of
breakdowns in power supply in several parts of the state in the last four
days. (H)

INCOME CEILING FOR OBCS RAISED: The State government has changed the
criteria for defining the 'creamy layer' of Other Backward Class by
increasing the annual income ceiling from Rs. One lakh presently to Rs.2.5
lakh. (GT)

MESQUITA GETS TRAPPED IN LIFT: Former MLA, Dr Wilfred Mesquita, had a tough
time at the office of the inspector of land and survey records at SGPDA,
Margao, when he and three others were trapped in the lift due to a power
failure. Luckily, the power was restored after 15 minutes, putting an end to
his woes. (NT)

LABOURER ELECTROCUTED: Devidas Rama Kunkolienkar, a 32-year-old labourer
from Cuncoliem-Mardol, died of electrocution at a factory in the Kundaim
Industrial Estate at about 1.30 pm on June 17. (H)

NOBBLING DUO NABBED: This young couple had conceived a unique plan to rob
people of their mobile sets. They would fake urgency, request pedestrians in
villages to lend them their mobile phones to make 'urgent' calls and then
hook off with the phones. Karen Pinto (23) and Cannary Soni (22) would
travel on a motorbike KA-19-9568.Now they are cooling their heels in policy
custody. (GT)

TREKS TO COTIGAO AND BONDLA: Monsoon is the right time to explore the
greener side of nature. Keeping in mind, the Goa Hiking Association of
India, Margao Unit, have organised treks to Bondla and Cotigao wildlife
sanctuaries. Contact Vishwas Kadam Tel 3120922. (GT)

DALGADO KONKANI AKADEMI'S MEET: The Dalgado Konkani Akademi will be having
their general body meeting of all the members and well-wishers on June 19 at
3.30 pm at TB Cunha Hall, Panjim. Besides routine agenda, an ad hoc
committee will be elected, which was necessitated due to Fr Freddy D'Costa's
death last month.

TWO NEW POLICE STATIONS IN VASCO: Two new police stations in the port town
of Vasco are to be inaugurated by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on June 18
at 3.45 pm. While the new police station has been constructed after the
demolition of the old one near the Indian Oil Corporation storage tanks, the
Harbour Police station has been shifted to new premises at Sada and
henceforth would be called the Sada Police Station. (H)

FISH DETECTION SONAR: A new SS395 navigation and fish detection sonar model
was launched in Goa by Elcome Marine Services Private Limited and Wesman,
USA, at a function held a Hotel Marriott, Miramar, on June 16.The fish can
be located in all seasons, day and night, 365 days a year (where there is no
ban during monsoon) using sonar technology. (GT)

WHAT 18 JUNE COULD MEAN: The 18th of June is also not a date on the Goan
calendar. Certainly, it's not the name of a path in Panaji, because that
high street - exclusive to the greed of the rich man on the fast lane - has
little to do today with the ideas enshrined in "18 June". Like other sacred
days - 19 December (Liberation Day), 16 January (Opinion Poll Day), 4
February (Official Language Day) and 30 May (Statehood Day) - the day 18
June is closely associated with the sacrifice of the shaheeds who sang
"Vande Mataram" on the gallows; the struggle for justice; the dream of
freedom, and above all democracy and peace. But every year, we need to have
a closer look at what these words mean and how they relate to our lives.
(Edit in GT)

FREEDOM FIGHTER DEAD: Renowned freedom fighter Muralidhar Rane expired on
June 17 at his residence in Nagarcem, Canacona, and was cremated the same
day. He was 73. He was the working president of the All India Freedom
Fighters Association and had been felicitated by the former Prime Minister
Atal Behari Vajpayee in New Delhi last year. Hailing from Karwar, Rane had
settled in Nagarcem, Canacona, for the last 40 years. (GT)
