GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS Nov 20, 2004 LATEST FIRE FIGHTING SYSTEMS AT EXPOSITION: While the wounds of the 21 October blaze at the Professed House are healing, the accident seems to have woken up the authorities to take preventive measures and work towards installing advanced fire-fighting systems for the upcoming Exposition. The high mist water system to detect and suppress fires of any intensity will be installed for the first time in the State, at the Basilica of Bom Jesus and Se Cathedral next week. (GT) CAMPAL-PANJIM IS A BETTER CHOICE: Campal-Panjim is a much better venue compared to Siri Fort, Delhi, for hosting the International Film Festival of India as the infrastructural facilities are within walking distance, the Director of IFFI Neelam Kapur said in Panjim. (H) MIRAMAR BEACH TO HOST IFFI EXTRAVANGZA: Miramar beach will be the center of attraction during the course of the International Film Festival of India with a weeklong festival of movies and entertainment, which will be open to the public and organized by the Entertainment Society of Goa. (GT) "ALEXANDER" TO BRING DOWN CURTAINS: Directed by Mr Oliver Stone, "Alexander" will feature in the 35th International Film festival of India. The Hollywood film, Alexander, which will be released in the US this month end, will be featured on the concluding day of the IFFI. (NT) ENTERTAINMENT TAX SUBSIDY: The government has announced the implementation of the Goa Entertainment Tax based subsidy for cinema houses (theatres) scheme to help the ailing entertainment industry in the State, by way of incentives and concessions. The scheme will become effective for a period of five years from November 22, 2004. (GT) PSI KNOCKS DOWN TRUCK CLEANER: A 35-year-old truck cleaner from Karnataka, Yallapa Kolar, died on November 18 night after he was struck by the car driven by Pernem police station incharge PSI Udai Parab near the Dhargal RTO checkpost along the national highway. As he was crossing the road to show the vehicle's documents to the RTO officer, Yallapa was knocked down by a Maruti car driven by P SI Parab, who was proceeding from Mapusa to Pernem. (H) CALANGUTE MLA THREATENS: Calangute MLA Agnelo Fernandes on Friday threatened to stage dharnas in front of IFFI delegates staying in starred hotels in Sinquerim from 29 November if the government fails to grant more licences to set up shacks on the beaches. The protestors will also draw the delegates' attention to the non-removal of "River Princess". (NT) TORONTO NAVELKARS TO CELEBRATE: As the Navelim festivities come to an end in Goa, the feast of Our Lady of Rosary will be celebrated in Toronto, Canada, today (November 20). And for the 300 Navelkars staying there, it will be an emotional get-together like always. Says Navelim parish priest, Fr Jose da Costa, "When I visited the place in August, it was like a second homecoming for me. You surely can take Goans out of Goa, but can't get Goa out of Goans." Last week, the more than 300 Navelkars living in London celebrated the feast with gusto.The Dr Francisco Luis Gomes Memorial Complex Ground in Navelim will come alive today with music from Bands Purple Rain and Sensation. (GT) FILM ON GOA'S PATRON SAINT: The first ever full length digitally shot and mastered feature film on the life and times of St Francis Xavier titled "Grace, Guts and Glory", will be released by the Archbishop-Patriarch Filipe Neri Ferrao at the Pilar Seminary on November 20 at 11.30 am. The film is produced by Shamir Deniz and directed by Kavita Deniz. Noted playwright Isabel Santa Rita Vas is the casting director and Francisco Martins is the Art Director. The film features Karan Jaime Bodade in the lead role of St Francis Xavier and Jaret de Silva as Ignatius of Loyola. The music for the film is composed and arranged by Fr Dominic Alvares and recorded at Angel AV. (H) INGO'S SATURDAY NITE BAZAAR: Ingo's Saturday Nite Bazaar", the mother of all Goa nite markets, will be opening on November 20 at Arpora. The Saturday Nite Bazaar is a relatively new concept and is largely a rendezvous for those who love to listen to music. Generally upmarket tourists gravitate around the Saturday Nite Bazaar organised by Ingo Grill at Arpora. Stalls by foreign as well as local vendors make the scene at the famous bazaar. Musicians, dancers, magicians, painter and all sorts of talented folk, from all over the word, jam up and mingle with the locals and provide fabulous entertainment to tourists. (H) MUSEUM OF CHRISTIAN ART: India's first Museum of Christian Art, reputed to be one of its kind, will now be open between 9 am and 6 pm for the convenience of the two million visitors expected to come to Old Goa for the Exposition and the Sacred relics of St Francis Xavier. The most popular singer, called the "Voice of Europe", was in Goa as part of the Wedding Photographer's Group to promote Goa as a Tourist destination. Thomas Cook-Neckermann, Belgium, one of the biggest tour operators, organised the trip and Radisson White Sands Resort in Varca played the perfect host to the still evergreen 72-year-old artist and his wife from 10 to 17 November. Wally tried to explain that his music is universal and can never be grouped into pop, rock and jazz categories.
