(H) CONTEST FOR RENAMING MULTIPLEXES: The Entertainment Society of Goa, Panaji, will shortly hold a contest for renaming the four multiplexes constructed at old GMC, Panjim. Announcing this, Chief Minister Parrikar told reporters that the best entry would be awarded prizes. The Directorate of Information and Publicity, Panaji, has extended the date to submit the concept campaign designing for advertisement entry on the theme "Goa International Film Festival of India" to 29 October this year. (GT) TWO INJURED IN PARRA MISHAP: In an accident involving a Hero Honda motorcycle and a Tata Indica car at Birttovaddo, Parra, at about 5 pm on October 19, motorcycle rider, Mr Agnelo D'Souza and pillion rider Ms Ayesha D'Costa were injured. Both have fractured their legs. (NT) CYBERAGE SCHEME TO BE FINE-TUNED: Fine tuning of the Cyberage Scheme is in the offing as it enters the third year of implementation during the ongoing academic year, officials said. While as many as 13,437 students have availed the benefits under the scheme during the last two years, as many as 12,000 students are expected to be covered under the scheme for the year 2004-05. (GT) HELD FOR BUYING STOLEN GOODS: Ponda police arrested Girish Bholu Naik of Madkai and Philip Fernandes of Mobor-Cavelossin for allegedly purchasing stolen computers. Earlier Omkar Mishra, a native of Uttar Pradesh, had been arrested in connection with the charges of theft of computers from two different schools at Marcaim. (H) TANKER ERUPTS IN FLAMES: In a freak accident, a tanker carrying gas cylinders erupted in flames near Karmal Ghat on the South Goa border, on October 19, afternoon. However, there were no casualties. (GT) GUIRDOLIM OPPOSES SPONGE IRON PLANT: The village Panchayat of Guirdolim has resolved to oppose the setting up of a the Sponge Iron plant close to its border in neighbouring Curtorim village. (NT) RIGHTS OF DISABLED: The Goa Legislators' forum has invited Jeff Rosen, a Senior Member of the National Council on Disability of the United States, to deliver a talk on "Integration of the Rights of the Disabled into Law and State Policy - A World Perspective" and interact with the Members of the Forum especially the present MLAs including the Ministers in order to widen the horizons of the subject. (GT) BRITISH WARSHIP COMING: Just weeks after a high-powered visit by two ships and a nuclear submarine from the US Navy's Seventh Fleet, a Royal Navy Frigate is scheduled to visit the State on 20 November. The HMS Campbeltown will be on a goodwill visit - the second Royal Navy Vessel to do so this year - that is a part of a larger programme for interaction between the Indian and British armed forces. The destroyers "HMS Gloucester" also visited Goa earlier this year. (Reuven Proenca in GT) GOA'S RICE QUOTA REDUCED: Civil Supplies Minister Babu Ajgaonkar on Tuesday expressed unhappiness over the Central government's decision to reduce Goa's rice quota by 120 metric tones per month. Ajgaonkar told reporters that the Union government was giving step-motherly treatment to the state when nearly 19,000 BPL (below poverty lines) families were availing the rice through the fair price shops. (GT) ST ESTEVAM VILLAGERS OPPOSE MERGER: Villagers of St Estevam are up in arms against the proposed inclusion of the island in the Mayem constituency, which is across the river Mandovi and is not a contiguous part of Tiswadi taluka. At present, St Estevam is part of the Cumbarjua constituency. But under the draft delimitation proposal, it is sought to be included in Mayem segment of Bicholim taluka. A majority of the villagers have opposed the proposal on the ground that the island (now conveniently linked by a bridge) will be marginalized and alienated and suffer adversely in matters of development. (GT) "INITIATIVE ASSAGAO" LAUNCHED: The 'Initiative Assagao' involving the adoption of the village by St Xavier's College, Mapusa, was launched recently. The chief guest at a function at the Assagao Church hall was Fr Heinencio D'Souza, parish priest of Assagao Church. The guest speaker was Defny Lobo, a faculty member of the Goa Foundation, Mapusa. Nalisha Lin Maria Dantas welcomed the gathering, while Pradeep Morajkar, co-ordinator for the 'Initiative' proposed the vote of thanks. (GT) PIETRO WINS KONKANI PUROSKAR: Thomas Stephens Konkani Kendr has chosen the renowned Konkani novelist and writer in Roman script, Bonaventure D'Pietro (alias Bonaventure Peter Fernandes) as the recipient of Antonio Pereira Konkani Puroskar 2004, for his contribution to Konkani literature, stage and music. The award consists of a shawl, memento and a cheques of Rs.25,000 and will be presented by Fr Casmiro D'Mello on 25th October at a public function at TSKK premises. Bonaventure was born in Chinvar, Anjuna on 14 July 1943. (H) FORTUNE FOLLOWS SALIGAO MAN: Washington-based Quentin Coelho (46), who traces his roots to Saligao, had a mix of fortunes after he first learnt that he had stomach cancer and then about winning a one million dollar prizes. Quentin is a father of two and a night-shift worker at the Columbia Home Depot store. After the horrifying news that he had cancer, he was surprised after he called into a radio station contest. Rockville hit music station HOT 99.5/WITH FM informed him that as the 100th caller in its Hurricane Cash contest, he had won $1 million. "The prize couldn't have come at a better time," he says. Referring to his problem, he feels "You wonder what will happen. But this is a little bit of comfort. God is working."
