FISHING NETS GUTTED IN CANDOLIM FIRE: In a major fire mishap at
Shimer-Candolim, six rolls of nylon fishing nets and other material worth
Rs.60 lakh were reduced to ashes, after the godown storing the nets caught
fire in the wee hours of December 20. James Fernandes, the owner of the
fishing net, had his right leg burnt while trying to put off the blaze. (H)

GOVT SHOULD SUPPORT I T SECTOR: The Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry
urged the government to be more aggressive in carving out infrastructure in
the Information Technology sector as the lack of it was proving a setback
for potential industries. GCCI chairman Nitin Kunkalienkar told presspersons
that a few IT majors are interested in setting up shop here, but the
operational costs are high and manpower in inadequate. (WE-GT)

RELIEF TO MUNDKARS: The president of the State unit of BJP, Mr Rajendra
Arlekar, informed that the State BJP government would take adequate steps to
give relief to the Mundkars affected by the recent judgement of the Panaji
Bench of the Bombay High Court. (NT)

PROMOTING FILM, CREATIVE ARTS AS INDUSTRY: In view of Goa being the
permanent destination for the International Film Festival India from 2004,
the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry is proposing to promote film and
creative arts as an industry in the State, disclosed GCCI president Nitin
Kunkolienkar. Gurudas M Kamat, member of the Indian Documentary Producers
Association has been appointed as Chairman of the GCCI committee on 'Film
and Creative Industry Investment and Promotion'.  (H)

CAREER INFORMATION FAIR: A 2-day Career Information Fair 2003, organised by
the Rotary Club of Vasco da Gama, was inaugurated at the Kala Academy
Complex by the vice-chancellor of Goa University, Prof PS Zacharias, on
December 20. The main objective of the fair is to disseminate relevant
information about various vocations, courses, fees, etc and explain the
future prospects to the students visiting the event. (NT) One of the
prominent participants in the Fair is Goa's Institute of Maritime Studies, a
self-financing, non-profit making Institute which imparts quality training
since 1997 to young aspiring marine engineers, who are well received by the

INDIA'S FOREIGN EXCHANGE RESERVES: Have crossed the $100-million mark,
setting the stage for bolder economic reforms and higher economic growth,
Finance Minister, Mr Jaswant Singh, said on December 19. (PTI report in NT)

"PARAT EKDAM" BAGS FIRST PRIZE: The Konkani drama "Parat Ekdam" by Antruj
Lalitak (Bandora-Ponda) has bagged the first prize in the second Maghashyam
Keshav Naik all-Goa Konkani drama contest, organised by Sankalp Theatre at

'NARVEKAR MUST STEP DOWN': The president of the Goa Unit of Bharatiya Janata
Party, Rajendra Arlekar, has demanded the resignation of Dayanand Narvekar
from the presidentship of the Goa Cricket Association as well as from the
post of Deputy Leader of Opposition. Arlekar said, "If cricket is to thrive
in Goa then the Pendse Commission report should be implemented in toto and
those responsible for the cricket ODI debacle should step down immediately."

TWO DIE IN ROAD MISHAP: Two persons, Hirappa Naik (35) and Vithal Pujari
(35) resident of Peeda-Benaulim, died in a fatal accident, near
Mungul-Margao on December 19 night, involving a  scooter and pick-up van.

WOMAN RUN OVER BY TRAIN: One Carmine D'Silva was run over by a train at
Utorda on December 20. The 55-year-old woman was crossing the railways

BODY RECOVERED: The body of a 42-year-old security guard, Karna Bhahadur
Khakde, who went missing in the sea at Miramar on December 19, was found off
the Caranzalem shore on December 20. (NT)

X'MAS DESTINATION FOR MANY, FEAR FOR SOME: When it comes to an ideal
destination for Christmas and New Year, many Indians seem to have a
three-letter world in mind-Goa. Most travel agencies add that though they
are still getting inquiries for Goa, they were unable to meet the demand
because accommodation in Goa is packed. (H)

NEPAL'S 'NEW YEAR' DESTINATION: The Kantipur Online website in Kathmandu has
reported that the Restaurant and Bar Association Nepal, Pokhara, has
organised the 5th 5-day Street Festival, aimed at promoting Pokhara as a New
Year tourist destination. Bishnu Bahadur Gurung, Coordinator of the
festival, stated that many tourists visiting the country go to Indian
destinations, particularly to Goa, on the eve of the New Year. "Our aim is
to prove that Pokhara is an alternative to Goa to celebrate the great
occasion of the New Year." (H)

MURDER SUSPECTED: The death of Floriano Diniz of Molkarnem-Quepem, who
allegedly died after banging his head against a tree on December 18, took a
new turn on December 20. His wife, Angela Diniz, has been arrested by the
police in this connection. (H)

ACTIONAID INDIA, an organisation that works for the upliftment of the poor
communities, launched its 'Karm Mitra' fund raising programme in Goa on
December 19. The fundraising director of Actionaid India, Mr Jeronimo
Almeida, says that Karm Mitra is an exclusive donor membership programme
aimed at bringing together socially responsible citizens, who believe in
philanthropy for social justice and who want to invest in a better world for
the exploited and the marginalized. (NT)

TUEM RESIDENT APPEALS FOR HELP: Sonia Fernandes, a 20-year-old resident of
Tuem in Pernem, who is suffering from a serious heart ailment with VSD
aortic override, has been asked to undergo an operation at KLES Hospital in
Belgaum. The surgery will cost around Rs.2 lakh approximately. Those
interested in helping her could direct their donations to her Savings Bank
Account No.25783 at Central Bank of India, Mapusa Branch. (H)

DAMAN FISHERMEN IN PORTUGAL: Goa, Daman and Diu may have been freed of
Portuguese rule 42 years ago, but fishermen from the two Union Territories
are now turning to their former colonial rulers for a different
catch-brighter prospects. About 3,000 fishermen from Daman are reported to
have moved to Portugal, while others have shifted to other parts of Europe,
states a report in the "Times of India". (H)

IN LOVE WITH ACTING: He started as a child artiste in Marathi plays, hopped
as a villain into Konkani tiatr, graduated to theatre directing, moved up to
film acting and is now set to direct his first Konkani film. His long
theatrical journey is embellished with awards in all categories. Sandeep
Kalangutkar, the light-eyed, bearded, strapping six-footer from Sangolda,
seated under the big mango tree in front of his quaint cottage, spoke of his

PALLAVI CHALLENGES MALE BASTION: The rise of Goan women power was aptly
demonstrated by Pallavi Naik at the 3rd international 420 class all-India
national sailing championship at H20 water sports complex, Girgaum, Mumbai,
where she teamed up with Rohini Rau of Tamil Nadu to finish the runners-up.
She was rewarded for her performance with a berth in the Indian team for the
