(GT) DOCUMENTARY NOT COMMUNAL: GOVT: The State government has said that the documentary was meant to make the younger generation aware of the sacrifices made during the Liberation struggle and that it was produced "after consulting duly constituted committees and based on facts." (H) 'ALLOW NON-RESIDENT GOAN CHARTER TOURISTS TO STAY BEYOND 4 WEEKS': Nationalist Congress Party's Goa unit president, Dr Wilfred de Souza, has petitioned the Union Civil Aviation Minister, Praful Patel, to intervene and modify the rules to allow non-resident Indians of Goan origin taking "charter flights" to Goa to stay on beyond the four weeks period currently allowed. (H) GOANETTERS GATHER IN PANJIM: Goanetters from various parts of the world had a friendly get-together at Clube Vasco da Gama in Panjim today (December 21) afternoon. Over 20 goanetters exchanged pleasantries, some reminisced about the past, meeting as they did after a long time, others for the first time saw what some of the goanet members looked like. Fred Noronha, Cecil Pinto, Vivian D'Souza (Socorro), Marina and Tony Correia Afonso (Benaulim), Silviano Barbosa (Toronto), Vincent D'Souza (Mangalore), Ana Maria Goswami, Heta Pandit, Vivek Menezes (Divar), Mario Fernandes (Divar), Melinda Coutinho Powell (Davorlim), Desmond Nazareth, Ramnath Pai Raikar (NT), Carlos D'Silva (UK), Mario Dias Fernandes (Calgary), Margaret Mascarenhas, Brian Pinto (Sydney), Floriano Lobo (Moira), Christina Pinto (Sydney), Eugene Correia (Toronto), Daniel D'Souza (Vasco), Joel, Constantino Xavier (Lisbon), Roland Martins and Miguel Braganza were among those who met for a chat. A well brought out and interesting novel, "The Sixth Night" written by Silviano C Barbosa, was released on the occasion at the hands of Margaret Mascarenhas. Valentino Fernandes' book "How to be an Instant Goan" (with cartoons by Alexyz) was also released informally by Tony Correia Afonso. (GoaNOW) 2ND WEEKLY FLIGHT FROM DUBAI TO GOA: The Union Civil Aviation ministry has okayed a second direct flight in a week from Dubai to Goa and it will become operational within a week. This was announced on December 20 at a press conference by the state president of the Nationalist Congress Party, Dr Wilfred de Souza, who returned from New Delhi, after meeting several Union ministers including the Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Mr Praful Patel. (NT) RIFT BETWEEN CM, BABUSH WIDENS: For the Town and Country Planning Minister Atanasio alias Babush Monseratte, political life appears poised for a different turn as the rift between him and the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar seems to have widened. Monserrate, who celebrated his birthday on Monday (Dec 20), is seething with anger but is unclear about his next move, sources close to him said.It is not very clear as to why Monserrate and Parrikar who had a close-knit relationship, are distancing themselves from each other. (H) CONTRACTUAL KILLING: TWO HELD: Mormugao police has taken into custody two persons in connection with an attempted contractual killing case. According to reports, one Anthony had contracted a supari killer, a Bihari who was residing in a rented room at Sada-Vasco, to kill, a man from Panjim, in connection with a love affair. (H) WAITER MURDERED IN MARGAO BAR: A twenty-eight year-old waiter - Sahil Khan - from Hyderabad was strangulated to death in a bar and restaurant near Rajendra Prasad stadium in Margao, on December 19 at 8 am. (H) KICKED FROM JAIL TO JAIL: Of all the inmates who have taken up cudgels against the State prisons' administration few have been as vocal as Richard Rodrigues, a resident of Ponda, who has been shuffled around prisons across the State while still under trial. Apalled at his experiences and armed with valuable inside information, Rodrigues filed a criminal writ petition before the Bombay High Court at Goa, through his lawyer Advocate Shanti Maria Fonseca, pleading for respite. (GT) LLOYD'S FINANCE TO SHUT SHOP IN GOA: Lloyd's Finance, a national-based investment and finance company, is all set to close their lone office in Margao. According to a public notice issued recently the company said, "With a view to minimizing and reducing the expenses of Lloyd's Finance Ltd and after examining all relevant factors in the interest of all concerned it is decided that the branch office of the company in Goa will be closed from December 27, 2004." (H) CORTALIM SARPANCH: A petition seeking disqualification of Cortalim Sarpanch Rosalina Miranda and action against panchayat Secretary Pedro Carmo Jacques for 'misconduct' was filed in the court of the Additional Director of Panchayats, recently. (H) HELD 'HOSTAGE' IN KARNATAKA: GT Chief Reporter Paul Fernandes decided to cross over to Karnataka to look at the mining activity across the border that could lead to heavy siltation and ecological damage to river Mandovi. He, however, bumped into a group of irate villagers who literally held him and his team for close to five hours (on Liberation Day). Reason: He was traveling with a committed environmentalist who kept watch over felling of trees and other illegal forest activities. (GT) ALL GOA MANDO FESTIVAL: Minister for water resources Filipe Neri Rodrigues appealed to the youth to evince keen interest in culture along with academic field so as to preserve the right cultural heritage of Goa. Speaking as chief guest at the All Goa Mando Festival organized by the Lion Club of AVC at a function held at the Fatima Convent hall Margao recently. Rodrigues said the government has already initiated steps to assist cultural events like Mando Festival. (GT) YET TO 'LIBERATED' FROM DARKNESS: It seems that Cotigao (in Canacona) is a step-child of the Electricity department as villages like Keri, Nadkem, Avali, Butpal and Yendrem are still not electrified. Way back in 1982-83, a defective transformer was installed in the village. It functioned for only six months. (GT) LIQUOR RUINS HOMES: Lamgao is a village steeped in history. A green village now ravaged by mining, it is still peaceful. The ancient caves were a place for mediation for the Buddhist sages. Pandavas settled here during their period of 'Aggyadvara'. But in spite of so many blessings on the village, the place is ravaged by the problem of alcoholism. A number of youth have taken to the bottle, causing much agony in the village. (GT) CAROL SINGING: Carols, which were penned centuries ago, have been ringing even today heralding the start of the Christmas season in the State. Presently, the choirs are echoing in the streets, city circles and houses bringing to the common man the message of the birth of Jesus Christ and Bethlehem. Carol groups have been spreading the X'Mas messages.
