GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 23 February 2004 MARGAO COMES ALIVE AT CARNIVAL PARADE: Margao city, the hub of commercial activities of the State, for a while was agog on Feb 22 evening as the Carnival parade wended its way through the roads, beginning from Holy Spirit Church and culminating at the Margao Municipal square, even as a sea of humanity lustily cheered the floats which were accompanied by lively music. Around 58 floats participated in the competition. The traditional floats projected Goa's culture and lifestyle. However, the parade which was scheduled to start at 3.30 pm, got going at around 5.20 pm-nearly a two-hour delay. (H)
VASCO TO CELEBRATE CARNIVAL TODAY: The Vasco Carnival committee in collaboration with the department of tourism has organised a grand float parade in the port town of Vasco. The parade will start from Thakkar House at 4 pm. (NT) GIRL INJURED: Jade Fernandes, a six-year-old girl, was seriously injured when a stone thrown by an unknown person hit her on the head. Just as King Momo was nearing the dais, some miscreant threw a stone at the crowed that had gathered to watch the Carnival float parade in Margao on February 22. (GT) INDIAN TOURIST AMONG TOP SPENDTHRIFTS: A delegation of Singapore Tourism Board members is visiting India to devise strategies on how to tap potential in India, a country which is proving to be a growing market, that has been generating a high rate of tourists visiting Singapore over the years. Co-chairman of the Marketing Advisory Council for Tourism (India) Council and chairman of Kuoni Travel Group, Ranjit Malkani, claimed that India is one of Singapore's top 10 visitor generating markets. "In terms of money spent in Singapore, Indian tourists are ranked fourth. Singapore hosted more than 375,000 visitors from India in 2002," he claims. (H) PEDESTRIANS HURT IN ROAD MISHAP: Two pedestrian were seriously injured this morning in a road mishap which took place at Harvalem near Cortalim Cross. According to the Verna police the victims, Ms Rosalina Vaz and Ms Martina Gama (26), were walking by the side of the road at 9.15 am and were hit from behind by a Matiz car. (GT) BJP WILL WIN BOTH SEATS: Union Minister of State for Finance Shripad Naik asserted the need to vote for the Bharatiya Janata Party under the leadership of Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and make India a super power in the world. (GT) FLORICULTURE PROJECT: 'Orchid', a floriculture project launched by Vivek Naik, nature lover, will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar at Sal, Bicholim, today. Naik runs a nursery which has a tie-up with Goa Agro Farms and employs 25 people throughout the year. Calling upon the youth to start a similar venture for which he volunteered to provide all the know-how, Naik pointed out to the prerequisite of a plot of land for a guaranteed success. (GT) PHD FOR SHARDA: Sharda W Khade was awarded the PhD in Botany at the 16th annual convocation of Goa University held at the Kala Academy recently. Sharda carried out work on "Arbucular mycorrhizal status of Carica papaya in agro-based ecosystem of Goa" for her doctoral thesis. While carrying out her research on doctoral thesis, she also worked on Planning Commission project entitled "Plant and Fungus Biodiversity Inventory Conservation and Utilization effort for Western Ghat Region of Goa State" co-ordinated by Prof DJ Bhat, Dean of Life Sciences and BOD of Botany, Goa University. (GT) REMO'S CARIBBEAN TOUR: 2004 seems to have brought in a few foreign shows, starting on a 'foreign' note! I'm collaborating with a British composer, William Hall Jr, on a new track titled "Spectrum". In April and May I am scheduled to tour the Caribbean with a film crew led by a researcher from India, Dr Tejaswini Niranjana, who will document the whole 'adventure' on film. There I will jam up, record and perform with some of the top reggae artists in Jamaica and Calypso artistes in Trinidad. I am very excited about it, as you can imagine.
