DGP Amod Kanth and other senior police officials visited the mishap site once again on Friday morning. Governor SC Jamir also visited the Professed House to apprise himself of the situation. (H) CAUSE OF FIRE LOSSES NOT YET KNOWN: The authorities investigating into the issue of the blazing fire at the Professed House of the Basilica of Bom Jesus have not yet been able to pinpoint the causative factor while the total losses have not been toted up. While the investigation has covered some ground, the cause of the fire is veering towards an electrical short circuit. PWD officials are studying the damage to the structure, the walls, flooring and the ceiling to assess the losses caused in the fire which gutted the roof and the second floor and partly the first floor of the building which also served as an administrative wing of the Basilica. (GT) VALUABLE BOOKS, STATUES SAVED: The Director of the Centre for Social Communications and Media, Fr Olavo Velho Pereira, confirmed that while many books of Fr Moreno D'Souza printed for the forthcoming Exposition were gutted in the fire, many valuable books, statues of saints and old vestments were saved. He said the installation of fire-safety equipment for the building was being discussed.At the instance of the police department, the Basilica of Bom Jesus remained closed on October 22 for the second day running. Tourists were seen peering at the Basilica from the main road. (NT) FIRES IN 16TH AND 17TH CENTURY TOO: While the raging fire in the Professed House on Thursday morning caused shock waves, it has come to light that fires have ravaged this monument in the 16th and 17th centuries earlier. According to a reputed Goan historian, such fires were common in the 16th and 17th centuries and had plagued the Basilica as well. Famous Jesuit chronicler Francisco de Souza, who left a history of Jesuits in Asia "O Oriente Conquistado" died in one such fire at the Basilica residence in the late 17th century. (GT) COPS GOOF UP: Special Judge, NDPS Court, Nutan Sardessai, gave the benefit of doubt to Hilal Ahmed Dar, 24, a native of Kashmir and residing at Calangute on the ground that the prosecution case was riddled with doubts. The Calangute police had chargesheeted the accused for being found in illegal possession of 7 kg of charas, 500 grams of hash and 200 gms of opium totally worth Rs.4.15 lakh after a raid between 7 am to 8.30 am at Umtavaddo, Calangute, on 14 December 2000. (GT) JAPS TO FUND WATER AND SANITATION WORKS IN GOA: In an important development in the infrastructure sector, water supply and sanitation projects are being planned in Goa under a Japanese aid programme. A memorandum of understanding has been signed between Japan International Co-operation Agency, the urban development ministry of the government of India and the Goa government recently in Delhi, for preparing a master plan for water and sewerage in Goa. (H) KTCL STRIVING HARD: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on October 22 said that the Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited is striving hard to achieve the goal set by it to give better and comfortable transport services to the commuters and make the KTC one of the model transport corporations in the country. He was speaking as a chief guest at the 24th anniversary celebrations of the KTC at the Panaji Bus Terminus. (NT) 452 ASPIRANTS FOR LONE LDC POST: Strange it may seem, a total of 452 candidates have applied for a lone post of lower divisional clerk in the Margao Municipal Council. What's more is the fact that two LLB graduates and many candidates with post graduate qualifications in MSc, MCom and MA have also applied for the post as against the minimum SSC qualifications prescribed for the post. The demand from the reserved category for the post of LDC is equally strong. (H) SAMPARK KRANTI EXPRESS: Goa Sampark Kranti Express, a super fast train between Hazrat Nizamuddin and Madgaon, will be introduced from October 23. The weekly train No.2449 Up will run on the Konkan Railway route every Thursday commencing from 26 October while on the reverse direction it will be plying one very Saturday. (GT) ALLEGED MURDERER REMANDED TO CUSTODY: Alex D'Costa, accused in the sensational murder case of Regina Fernandes, a housewife from Loutulim, was remanded to 14 days judicial custody. The crime had been committed on August 5 while the accused was arrested on August 12. (NT) PLAN NEEDED TO SAVE OLD GOA CHURCHES: That the inferno should cause devastation on the eve of the 43-day Exposition of the Relics (which could even be the last one) when innumerable devotees and tourists are expected to visit the shrine beginning 21 November is, indeed, puzzling. While no motive could be attributed to the unhappy incident until the police probe report is available, it is certainly a matter of concern to all those, who tend to believe that the authorities entrusted with the upkeep of such monuments are guilty of negligence. (NT) ANTI-PLASTIC DRIVE LAUNCHED IN MERCES: A cleanliness drive was undertaken in Merces village especially to educate the people to prevent plastic from being dumped into roadside gutters. This drive was held to observe the 4th death anniversary of late FX D'Souza, the eminent football referee. The week-long programme was undertaken jointly by the FX Memorial Trust, Merces, in association with Rotary Club of Panaji. (NT) GOMANT VIDHYA NIKETAN: It was on 19th March 1912 that nine like-minded persons gathered and formed the Saraswat Brahman Samaj with a certain plan in mind. Their aim was to establish a library, help the physically handicapped and promote cultural programmes. Awarding scholarships to the needy was also one of the tenets of the Samaj. However, in course of time, the preceding committee realized the need to change the name of the institution so that it would not be branded to belong to a certain class of citizens. Keeping this in mind the institution was renamed Gomant Vidya Niketan on 29 November 1962. According to official documents, Vaz, who accounted for 164,265 pounds in the year ending in April this year, put his 22,409 pounds in combined postage and stationery costs.
