Making a strong case for the immediate withdrawal of the controversial VCD, which seeks to 'distort history', he said the government should tender an apology to freedom fighters for the objectionable film. "It's a third-rate, pathetic film and I don't want to watch it again. Such a film shouldn't be shown in Goa." (NT) PRISON REPORT SUBMITTED: A report on the state of prisons in Goa, compiled by a four-member commission, was submitted to the Bombay High Court of Goa on Wednesday. The commission was appointed in the wake of a petition filed by undertrial Richard D'Souza who questioned several alleged wrongs on the part of the State prisons' administration. (GT) GOODS DESTROYED AT VASCO: Goods worth around Rs.50,000 were destroyed in a fire at the home of an elderly man, Custodio Menezes from Colaco Arcade on the main Vasco-Baina road. While ironing his clothes at around 3.30 pm, it was reported that the elderly man got drowsy and fell asleep. The fire started and slowly spread across the whole room. (H) THOUSANDS PAY TRIBUTES TO FR OLAVO: Thousands of people paid their last tributes to the director of the Diocesan Centre for Social Communications Media of Archdiocese of Goa, Fr Olavo Velho Pereira, as his body was laid to rest at Benaulim on December 23. In his speech, the Archbishop, Rev Filipe Neri Ferrao said that the Archdiocese had lost a talented priest who had contributed much for the growth of the society through his various talents. "As a pilgrim, Fr Pereira gave his entire life for his flock and crushed himself till the end of his journey in order to attain eternal life," he added. MMC chairperson Kamilini Painguinkar speaking to the press stated that the protest was uncalled for as immediate action was initiated and the assailant was arrested.
