PARRIKAR STRIPS BABUSH: In a major development, Chief Minister Manohar
Parrikar on January 27 stripped Atanasio alias Babush Monserrate of the
highly prized Town and Country Planning portfolio while undertaking a minor
cabinet reshuffle. (H)

BABUSH QUITS CABINET: While Parrikar has clearly drawn the first blood,
Monserrate quit from the Cabinet by relinquishing his portfolios of Science
and Technology (in lieu of TCPD), Environment and Provedoria, though he
continues to be a BJP MLA. "If I am not fit to hold one portfolio, then how
can I be fit to hold the others," he asked. "It is a challenge for me to
carry out my work by being an MLA," he said when contacted for his comment.

MICKY PACHECO JOINS BJP: In a dramatic political development, the one-member
United Goans Democratic Party (Micky) established by Benaulim MLA, Mr
Francisco Xavier Pacheco today merged with the ruling BJP, thereby
increasing the BJP's strength to 21 in the 40-member Goa House. (NT)

RESHUFFLE WAS TO INJECT EFFICIENCY: CM: Justifying his decision of
reshuffling portfolios, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said that the
exercise has been done "to make the government more people-friendly, curb
corruption in the administration and inject efficiency in various

LUIZINHO UNFAZED: Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president, Luizinho Faleiro
has said he is not at all surprised over the latest political development
and reiterated his demand for the dismissal of the Parrikar government. (H)

OPPN SLAMS PACECHO: The state president of Nationalist Congress Party, Dr
Wilfred de Souza, when asked for his reaction to Mr Francisco Xavier Pacheco
joining the BJP, said: "Best of luck of him. He has killed himself." (NT)

SPORTING CLUBE PLAYERS INJURED IN ACCIDENT: Five Sporting Clube de Goa
players were seriously injured and several others escaped with bruises when
the bus they were traveling in - from the team hotel to the airport -
overturned in Kolkata on January 27 evening. Sporting Clube de Goa were in
Kolkata for their National Football League fixture against Mohun Baan, which
they lost by a solitary goal. The Goans were on their way to the airport -
from Presidency Inn - en route to Mumbai, where they were slated to take on
Mahindra United. Peter Pereira was seriously injured. The lanky midfielder
has multiple injuries and is currently being kept in the ICU, at Suraksha
Hospital in Kolkata. Others on the seriously injured list include Sandeep
Colaco (collar-bone), John Barreto (would on the forehead), Joe Pereira
(dislocated shoulder) and Ajay Diwadkar (head injury). (H)

AUSTRALIAN KILLED IN ROAD ACCIDENT: An Australian national and a driver died
on the spot when the Maruti van in which they were traveling collided
against a truck coming in the opposite direction at Farmagudi (Ponda) late
night on 26 January. A Maruti van driven by one Ramnath Naik (55) and
carrying two passengers Australian nationals Dolhan David William and
Kowallick David John was in the process of overtaking another vehicle at
Farmagudi when it collided head on with the truck. William and Naik were
killed on the spot while John fractured his leg. The injured, John, has been
admitted to the GMC, Bambolim, while the body of deceased William has been
sent for post-mortem. (GT)

PADMASHREE TO M BOYER: The news of legendary tiatrist Manuel Santana Aguiar
popularly known as M Boyer being awarded the prestigious Padmashree award
was a happy occasion not only for him, his family and friends but also to
all tiatr lovers who thronged to witness this original Goan Konkani
dramatist. "Accept my heartiest congratulations," a personal telegram from
Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil brought the happy news. Boyer is the first
Tiatrist to win the prestigious award conferred by the President of the
country. Boyer, who is 74, suffered a paralytic attack two years ago, which
brought an end to his 50 years on the Konkani stage. Married to Martha, he
has five sons, two of whom have been following the father's footsteps. (GT)

Wednesday congratulated M Boyer on being conferred civilian award Padmashree

RAVE PARTY DISRUPTS R-DAY CELEBRATIONS: A school (St Michaels Convent High
School, Vagator-Anjuna) and its management, and the students were getting
ready to unfurl the national flag on Republic Day. But blaring Trance music
from the rave party nearly drowned out every other sound. And finally, the
tricolour had to be unfurled to the beat of acid music. Shocking, but true.

14-YEAR-OLD IMITATES BOLLYWOOD FLICK, LOSES LIFE: Re-enacting a scene from
the Bollywood movie "The Legend of Bhagat Singh" proved fatal for a
14-year-old Mushid Anwar Shaikh, a resident of Detervaddo in Vasco, when he
accidentally hung himself to death at his house on Thursday. According to
information available, a young Murshid, taken in by the movie - particularly
the scene of Bhagat Singh being sentenced to death by the gallows - tried to
replicate it in his residence. He called his younger sister for a live demo
at 7.30 pm yesterday night. While he was preparing the noose of the rope,
his sister left the room and on her return was shocked to find Murshid
hanging lifeless from the ceiling. (GT)

UNCLE HELD FOR MOLESTING NIECE: The Panaji police on Wednesday arrested a
maternal uncle of a five-year-old girl on the charge of molesting her at
Caranzalem. (GT)

YOUTH HELD FOR RAPE: A 14-year-old school girl from Pomburpa was allegedly
raped by a youth from Kundaim-Mauzem on January 25 At around 2.30 pm at
Vijay Nagar, Torda, in Porvorim. The accused, Jeetu, has been arrested. (NT)

HOLD CHILDREN'S COURT DAILY: LAWYERS: Hardly a month into the year, and
there are already four cases of rape or molestation of minors reported. And
with the increasing number of crime against minors, the general feeling
among the lawyers and activists is that the Children's Court, set up under
the Goa Children's Act 2-04, should be held everyday instead of once a week.

ONE HELD FOR KIDNAPPING: The Panaji police on Jan 27, arrested one Jessy
Paul Fernandes, 37, a resident of Porvorim on the charge of kidnapping one
Shankar Prasad of Vasco and forcibly taking his signatures on a document.

MAN DROWNS AT VASCO: A 42-year-old man, Shiva Sazro Parab, drowned after he
fell into the sea near berth number 10 of Mormugao Port Trust on January 25

RELIGIOUS ARTICLES STOLEN IN CUNCOLIM: Unknown culprits stole away religious
articles, including a statue of Our Lady with a golden crown from the house
of one Bigalds D'Souza, a resident of Cuncolim. The value of the stolen
goods is put at over Rs.10,000. (H)

'MONIS TUM' EXCELS: "Monis Tum", presented by Shri Ganaraj Sangit Sanskritik
Mandal, Quitula-Aldona, bagged the first prize for best performance at the
6th all Goa Tiatr Competition, organised by Vandana Productions, Borim, from
January 18 to January 24 at the Kala Academy. The second and third prizes
were bagged by "Kortubancho Sonvsar" and "Bhaddeacho Kusvo" by Merces Club

EXHIBITION ON 'RURAL MUSINGS': Gallery Geetanjali, Panaji, will host an
