A 'MILK RIDE': The Porvorim residents Welfare Association has criticised the Goa Government Dairy for creating an artificial milk shortage. Juino de Souza, secretary of PRWA, in a press note stated that milk supply at official milk booths is hardly available from 6 am to 6.30 am as supply is exhausted within half-an-hour, whereas the same milk bags are freely available in the surrounding grocery and provision shops after 6.30 am which consumers are forced to buy at higher rates. (GT) SLUM AREA IN VASCO: A joint meeting of the urban poverty eradication cell, slum monitoring and development advisory committee was held under the chairmanship of chief officer of Mormugao Municipal Council, Mr Elvis Gomes, who is also the project officer of UPE. (NT) TREE FELLING IN CANACONA: After a brief lull in tree felling and poaching activities in the Canacona taluka, the illegal activities are going on with full gusto, right in front of the personnel of the Forest department and not in the wild forest region of the taluka. (H) DENGUE FEVER UNDER CONTROL: The Health Minister, Dr Suresh Amonkar, said that the dengue fever, which was observed in certain parts of the State, has been brought under control. He also refuted the allegation that the disease was spreading in other parts of the State. (NT) BROWN SUGAR: The Anti-Narcotics police yesterday arrested Bhagwat Chotu Singh, 28, a native of Himachal Pradesh, and seized 110 grammes of brown sugar from his possession at the Colva beach. The value of the seized narcotics is estimated at Rs.1.66 lakh. (GT) AMBAULIM LOCAL KILLED: A 45-year-old man from Bamnabhat-Ambaulim died on the spot when a truck ran over him at Ambaulim on Monday evening. Quepem police said Avelino Pedro Fernandes was in an intoxicated condition and was sleeping by the roadside. (H) TO ENCOURAGE VEGETABLE GROWING: Hoping to encourage citizens to grow their own vegetables at home and to curb dependence on commercial vegetables, the Directorate of Agriculture yesterday released a booklet titled "Kitchen Garden Manual". (H) THE NUMBER OF CHRISTIANS IN POLICE FORCE: The National Commission for Minorities will shortly be meeting the government to ascertain the percentage of Christians recruited in the recent round of recruitment in the Goa police force. In the second case, Diago Furtado complained that unknown miscreants entered his residence at Fatorda and made good their escape with gold ornaments, mobiles and cash. (GT) YOUTH KONKANI MEET: Goa Konkani Academy will organise the sixth Yuva Konkani Sahitya Sammelan on December 8 and 9 at St Xavier's College, Mapusa. To inculcate the reading and writing habit among students, the Goa Konkani Academy started the series of Konkani literary conferences back in 1998 at the Quepem Government College. Organisers say it has led to a boost for read ing and writing in Konkani among college and higher secondary students. (GT) HERITAGE STATUS FOR SECRETARIAT: Palacio de Idalcao or Secretariat, as it is called now, will cease to be an administrative set-up after over 240 years. It will soon be declared as a protected monument. With the shifting of the Secretariat to the new complex at Porvorim next year, the government has constituted a 13-member committee comprising heritage experts, architects and others to prepare a plan for its conservation.Originally, it was a palace probably built in 1472 by the Bijapur kings. It served as an abode and a stronghold to prevent the enemy's entry into Old Goa in tandem with the small fort of Reis Magos. The Konkani Kala Sahitya Kendra, Curchorem, has been presenting this award for the last five years. (H) 'PAI' AWARD FOR SHIVDAS: The noted Konkani writer, N Shivdas, was presented with Dr TMA Pai Literary Award for his book "Maharukh" on October 18 at a glittering function held at the MG Memorial College's Gitanjali Hall, Udupi-Manipal, at the hands of Mr KK Pai, former chairman of the Syndicate Bank and the president of Dr TMA Pai Foundation. The award carries Rs,5,000, a sandalwood memento and a appreciation certificate. "Maharukh" is a collection of short stories and was earlier awarded the Janaganga Literary Award in 2002. (NT) ROMI KONKNNI: To say that Roman-script Konknni journalism did not make a mark would be a fallacy. However, that it did not maintain and live up to the challenges of modern day journalism is a fact that caused its very decline. The total number of Konknni-speaking people spread in India (Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Kerala) and scattered across smaller pockets across the world, is five million. This population of Konknni-speaking people is further divided between people who write the language and read it in four different scripts: Devnagri, Roman, Kannada, and the Malayalam script. Among the four scripts, the population that understands or follows Roman script Konknni would be around 300,000 to 400,000 approximately. However, going by facts and figures of Konknni journalism on the whole, we could definitely put Roman script Konknni journalism as the fore runner.
