GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 29 Dec 2003 CATAMARAN SERVICE RESUMES: The Catamaran service between Goa and Mumbai commenced after about six year with 35 passengers arriving here yesterday (December 28) evening on a vessel of Samudra Link Ferry Shipping and Cruise Services Pvt Ltd. The vessel will depart for Mumbai at 11 am after the inaugural ceremony scheduled to be held at the jetty of the Navigation Department at 8.30 am today. Of the 35 who arrived yesterday, 10 were foreigners, who visited the State for the first time. Mohammed Isaac Kamkar was the captain on board. Till January 2004 end the service will be available from Mumbai at 9 am every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, while from Goa at 9 am every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. The travel time is expected to be reduced to eight hours. (GT) YEAR OF POLITICAL STABILITY: Goa witnessed a political stability during 2003 with the BJP-led coalition government countering all the moves of the Opposition-Congress, who failed to give a united fight. (GT) TREES CRUCIFIED IN PANAJI: The Corporation of the City of Panaji in its enthusiasm of illuminating the waterfront parts of the city, seems to have given a free licence to the contractors to use three inch long iron nails for attaching the decorative strips of electric bulbs. These iron nails would permanently damage the trees. This act of killing the trees, by slow death, was brought to the notice of the mayor. (Nandkumar Kamat in GT) ASILO DOC IN THE DOCK: What appears to be an attempt to mislead the government, a senior doctor at Asilo's has allegedly altered his date of birth, at the time of joining service. (H) TOURIST KIDS SAVED: Pele Fernandes, John Mendes, Mario Fernandes and Thomas Fernandes swam into the rough waters of the Arabian Sea and rescued the children from the boat anchored off the coast they were playing in. The four children (3 girls and 1 boy) in the age group of 13 and 14 from France, have been staying in Benaulim for the last two weeks. They swam up to a boat anchored deep in the sea. After playing on the boat used for dolphin trips for more than 45 minutes, they tried to swim back. However, they found the under-currents pulling them out to sea so they returned to the boat and had to be rescued. (GT) DREAMS, CLASHES FOR FOURTH ESTATE: It was a year of media dreams and clashes. In 2003, the year going by, Goa saw the relaunch of the state's lone Devanagari Konkani daily "Sunaparant", a new weekly, and a surprisingly bitter row between the state's media savvy chief minister and four of the most prominent newspapers. (H) PELICAN SIGNALS: The government is presently toying with the idea of investing Rs.1.42 crore to install sophisticated "Pelican" signals at some of the accident prone zones on a trial basis. (GT) VASCO YOUTH KILLED IN MISHAP: Motorcycle rider, Naguesh Rama Borkar (27), was returning to his residence in New Vaddem, Vasco, on his Pulsar motorcycle . While trying to overtake a bus at Agassaim, he dashed a passenger rickshaw coming from the opposite direction and succumbed to the injuries sustained. (NT) GROWING PORVORIM: The satellite town of Porvorim and adjoining areas have developed at a rapid pace during the last 10 years. The phenomenal growth in population has overloaded the existing infrastructure in many ways, leading to road accidents, pressure on sewage system and disposal of garbage, as well as demand for more power supply and water supply. (H) TOURISM: LURE OF EASY MONEY: There is a boom in the tourism industry this year. Officially, the industry generates a domestic revenue of Rs.850 crore and foreign exchange of Rs.1500 crore in an average year. Unofficially, the figures are substantially higher, taking into account the Rs.300 crore worth of illicit trade in narcotics and psychoactive drugs. In lodging, boarding, catering and gypsy type flea market enterprises, now there are several new players. The old equations are changing very fast. The old partnerships have collapsed. There is a 'make me right quick' syndrome in this business and the stakes are very high in the coastal tourist belt. (Nandkumar Kamat in Glimpses-NT) 'VISION 2004': Industries Minister Ramrao Dessai inaugurated 'Vision 2004', a national vendor development programme-cum-exhibition at the Kala Academy complex, Campal-Panaji, on Friday (December 26).
