RE: Goan Voices on "Bomb Threat Reported at IFFI Venue ..." of Nov 25

On Tuesday night a mysterious call to the police about a "bomb" in an IFFI
venue. A thorough check reveals nothing threatening. Government officials
deny that this was a scare tactic but a police drill instead.

On Wednesday the Police Chief is relieved of his duties by the CM.

Today's paper says the reason was that he had refused to comply with the
CM's order for a blanket ban on traffic on DB Marg for the ten day duration
of IFFI. Instead he had advised restrictions only during specified hours to
minimise inconvenience to the public.

>From the above it seems there has a been a role reversal of sorts. The CM
seems to have adopted the perspective of a Police Chief while the DGP has
adopted the perspective of a politician concerned about the people!

Thus the CM seems to be thinking "car bombs, drive by shootings, abductions
etc etc". Was the hoax call meant, perhaps, to magnify the threat of
terrorism in the public mind in order to justify the subsequent sacking of
the Police Chief? Some food for thought there, methinks.

Furthermore, what was the point of disrupting traffic for several months on
DB Marg while it was presumably being upgraded on a wholesale basis only to
block the road during IFFI? This is the most ridiculous notion I have heard
in a long time. The government could have saved a lot of money by planning
the blockade in advance and doing some minimal upgrades on DB Marg instead!
