EC TO GIVE SERIOUS CONSIDERATION
TO THE DEMAND TO REPLACE KESHKAMAT

Election Commissioner Mr. B.B. Tandon today (March 23) assured that serious
consideration would be given to the demand to replace the current Collector
and Returning Officer for the North Goa Parliamentary Constituency Mr. S.S.
Keshkamat with a free and fair officer. The assurance was given to a
10-member delegation of concerned citizens led by former student leader Adv.
Aires Rodrigues when they met the Election Commissioner at Panaji today.

Adv. Rodrigues submitted a memorandum to the Election Commissioner seeking
removal of Mr. Keshkamat as free and fair elections could be ensured only if
the credentials of officers responsible for conducting elections is
absolutely above board. The memorandum complained that Mr. Keshkamat, who
was due to retire in September 2003 on attaining superanuation, was granted
a one-year extension at the behest of some senior BJP leaders including
current North Goa BJP candidate Mr. Sripad Naik, who had very strongly
lobbied for Mr. Keshkamat's extension apparently in view of the impending
Lok Sabha elections. Rodrigues also told the Election Commissioner that Mr.
Keshkamat was bound to be biased in favour of the ruling BJP in gratitude
for the extension in service granted to him and Mr. Keshkamat would even go
out of the way to favour the Ruling BJP hoping for yet another extension.
