DUBAI: Vanxim-Divar and ABC Benaulim entered the
quarter-finals of the Pehla Cup all Goa inter-village
football tournament organised by All Star
Entertainment in association with United Goans at the
Irani Club Dubai.
In their last league encounters Vanxim-Divar trounced
Siolim United 4-0 while 10-man Benaulim beat Morjim
3-0.
Anthony Fernandes, Russel Rodrigues (2) and Randall
Pereira scored for Vanxim-Divar.
Roy Das, Orlando Viegas and captain Jerry Travasso
netted for ABC Benaulim.
Needing an outright victory to advance Benaulim made
their intentions clear from kick-off, attacking Morjim
goal with some good moves.
Benaulim took the lead in the 17th minute when Das
netted the first goal after missing sitters earlier.
Franky Almeida missed an open chance to restore parity
for Morjim when his shot hit the right post with
Benaulim 'keeper Jose at his mercy.
Benaulim suffered an early setback when Idal Fernandes
was cautioned by referee Majid for dissent. Having
received an yellow earlier Idal was ejected for an
early bath.
Crossing over, one expected Morjim to take advantage
of having an 'extra man' but it was Benaulim who
dominated. Orlando Viegas buttressed the lead when his
low shot beat the Morjim 'keeper to his right. Jerry
Travasso added an insurance goal seconds before Majid
blew the final hooter.
Nicholas Fernandes of Morjim was declared the man of
the match.
Benaulim join Loutolim in the final eight and will now
meet the Group D winners to be decided when Raia take
on FC Siolim.
Vanxim-Divar, who were held to a goalless draw by
Chinchinim in their last match, outplayed Siolim
United. Anthony Fernandes chested a Colin floater to
put Vanxim-Divar ahead.
Russel Rodrigues added two more before Randall Pereira
rounded off the rout in injury time. Rodrigues won the
Citizen man of the match award.
The second team from Group A will be decided on Monday
when Chinchinim meet Santo Estevam in their last
match.
Monday's matches: St Anthony Pernem vs Loutolim at
3.45 pm; Fischer St Estevam vs Chinchinim at 4.45 pm.
Both matches at Irani Club Dubai.
