About Patriotic NRIs A wisecrack by cartoonist Laxman in a national daily recently says, "I admire these non-residents' love for our country, art, culture, intelligence, tradition and literature. If only our own people had been as patriotic, we would have fared far better."
Once a friend of mine said NRI stands for non-required Indians and not non-resident Indians. Come on now, we can't sit on the fence and hop over to a safer place when we feel insecure somewhere -- be it due to weather, discrimination or politics. The foreign exchange contribution is well appreciated but genuine love and involvement is required to call oneself an NRI. How many, particularly second and third generation NRIs know the language, culture and truly like to be an Indian? Be honest. ALIC ALEXANDER, Margao
