I find the discussion on this topic interesting and informative. I read somewhere that a Nair youth from medieval Kerala, who had revolted against the suffocating caste system there, joined hands with the Portuguese to marry a low-caste girl with whom he had fallen in love. The ruling class put the girl to death and passed a death sentence on him in absentia. The Captain of a Portuguese ship took him to Portugal, where he rose to be an Admiral in the Portuguese Navy.
Could someone confirm this incident? Maybe Dr Teotonia can throw some light on it.
