Interesting debate. It would be difficult to pinpoint one or two symbols that embody the diverse nature of the Goan ethos.
Let me think aloud. Coconut tree, abolem, mogarem, waves, canji, cashtti, candles at a wayside shrine, tiled roofs, two men: one in western suit, other in coat & pudvo, rocks & waves....that's it: Rocks and waves. A small icon showing rocks and waves lashing. A small tower on the edge of the rocks. The tower is vague, could be a lighthouse/church/temple. Implying hinterland alongside the coast.Land reclaimed. Grand structures built by succeeding conquerors. The spray of the water hints of rain. Seems Donapaulish with romantic legend. The sun is there, the surf, the promise of fun. And also the brooding romance of ruined monuments of a time long gone. A land that is fraught with fun and mystery. Zoom into the icon. There's a fisherwoman moving down the rocks. She waves to the bikini-clad swimmer in the surf. A solitary sexton tolls the bell in the spire. Incense wafts from the deepstambha. In the woods behind the spire, the spirit of the gaunkar, ganvpurush, denvchar moves silently. A sentinel of a haunting land that brought many a ship crashing on those rocks. The bells chime for a feast, the speedboats churn up foam, boys and girls grow old in love. So Old a Place......said a chronicler, Diogo de Couto. The rocks are old, but the waves that lash are always bringing change. ---- Jose Lourenco --- "Teotonio R. de Souza" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > > I am tjhankful for two serious suggestions: cashew > (-nut?) and abolim.
