COSMETIC CHANGES, SAYS CHURCHILL: Churchill Alemao, former member of
parliament and Congress party candidate for the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls
yesterday (Mar 11) termed the BJP's claim of development of the State as
justice cosmetic changes. Addressing a press conference, he said that
installing fountains and renovating traffic islands does not amount to
beautification or development of the State. With increase in water and
electricity taxes, survival of common man has become difficult, he said.

BJP WILL CLINCH SOUTH GOA: Power Minister Digamber Kamat, who has been
declared the chairman of the South Goa campaign committee for the
forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, said that the BJP party will win the seat
by more than 25,000 votes. He said that he is confident of polling more than

campaign will be on the positive note. (GT)

MANGROVES DYING A SLOW DEATH: An infestation in the estuary of River Mandovi
is slowly wiping out mangrove plantations along the Panjim-Ribandar-Ponda
national highway. While 80 per cent of the plantations have already been
affected, a total destruction of the plantations along this stretch is now
feared. The reason behind the mortality of the mangroves is the infestation
of the barnacle, 'a shrimp like animal' which has vigorously attacked the
plantations during the last two years. (H)

CHILD KILLED IN ROAD MISHAP: Shilpa Lakhani (8) was killed on the spot when
an autorickshaw dashed against her as she was crossing the road at

GOA'S MANY ELECTRICITY WOES: Goa claims to be having a surplus in electric
power, which it is selling to other states at a good margin of profit. Yet
people in the state face poor quality of electric service, in the form of
frequent power outages, inadequate load/voltage handling capacity for even
simple household items such as the TV and the refrigerator. (Brian Antao in
Herald)

BEHIND THE FIGURES: Would you believe that, on an average, a resident of Goa
has nearly Rs.80,000 as deposits in the bank? That's true. Official figures
tell us the per capita bank deposit for every man, woman and child in Goa is
79,333. Averages tend to be misleading, but figures sometimes help us to
comprehend the reality. Finally, the government is now conceding the role
played by the State's expatriate population. As official quarters recently
put it: "An important characteristic of deposits in Goa is the significant
contribution from the Non-Resident Emigrants (NREs) which account for about
30 per cent of the deposits". (Edit in Herald)
