The meeting is expected to approve some proposals which would be introduced in the ensuing Assembly session. (GT) IFFI MEET: A meeting of all MLAs to elicit their views on the proposed International Film Festival of India was held at Hotel Nova Goa, Panaji, on September 14. Congress MLAs complained that they were not taken into confidence when the decision making process started a couple of months ago and demanded the viability and feasibility report of the project. (GT) MISMANAGEMENT OF THE CITY OF PANAJI: The message that one gets is that the administration of the 160-year-old Nova Goa appears to be partly privatised. A group of private professional architects is aggressively pushing their expensive private agenda at the cost of fundamental priorities of the city. Now nobody speaks about a master plan for sustainable development and environmentally sound scientific management of the city. The dream merchants have put their merchandise on display as the city suffers nightmares-a collapsed sewerage system, stinking riverfront and a dying Mandovi estuary, polluted air, contaminated water supply, landslides, viral hepatitis, malaria, respiratory diseases-the list is long and unending. Aesthetics and visually soothing external beautification plans have taken precedence over the basic issues. (Nandkumar Kamat in Glimpses-NT) RIGHTS OF DISABLED: Plans are afoot by some working disabled persons to start an association to take up the matter of the rights of the disabled in Goa. The object of the association will be to advocate and lobby on issues and concerns of people with a disability, organise seminars, raise awareness, provide a forum for the disabled to share information and resources and network with individuals and other similar organizations to achieve common goals. (GT) POLICE HELPLESS OVER STRAY CATTLE: The state government seems to be doing little to initiate a drive against stray cattle since they have turned into an accident 'prone zone' list. Stray cattle have been endangering lives on the national highways, as most of the time they choose to sit in the middle of the road during nights. (H) FORMER EDC CHAIRMAN and managing director Dr JC Almeida has suggested novel methods to pull the Corporation out of the red. Dr Almeida strongly advocated the need to find industrialists interested in taking over sick and bankrupt units and handing them over to such entrepreneurs. He was of the opinion that this would help the EDC to a great extent instead of the routine measure resorted to recover the invested amount like one-time loan waiver scheme. (GT) BACK FROM FOREIGN TOUR: The 11-member Goan delegation which went on a foreign tour last month felt that the political will was required to implement some of the better infrastructure projects which they saw aplenty in the land down under.
