HINTERLAND RESIDENTS NEED IODISED SALT: People living in the hinterland and places where iodine rich sea food is not readily available need to be supplied with iodised salt in order to reduce the risk of getting iodine deficiency disorders. Dr Bicaji Ganekar, former Dy Director of the Health Services, said while speaking at the Zonal Workshop on National Iodine Deficiency Disorder Control programme and AIDS Awareness. (H) GOA DESERVES A RIGHTFUL SHARE: Goa is contributing to the Centre primarily by way of customs, central excise, service tax and income tax. Being a tax-compliant state we have a population of 13 lakh contributing more than Rs.2100 crore to the centre and this figure is growing at almost 15 per cent every year. As against this, the State share as per the formula is barely 10 per cent. The Finance Commission members need to look into this aspect when they formulate the next five-year plan. It is learnt that 13 out of the 16 party MLAs have put their signature on the memorandum suggesting a change in the leadership. (GT) TRIBUNAL MOVED: The Administrative Tribunal has issued a notice to the Goa Infrastructure Development Corporation in a case filed by a non-governmental organisation alleging that the plan for beautification of the Mala lake in Panaji may result in an irreversible ecological damage.."Gomantak Times" had carried a report 'Plan to beautify Mala lake may drive birds away' in its edition dated 17 November, 2003. (NT) ALDONA TEACHER DIES AFTER FALL: A 57-year-old teacher at the St Thomas Boys High School, Aldona, had a fatal fall from the first floor of his bungalow at Santarxett, Aldona, on Monday evening. According to the police, Anthony Adrian D'Costa had come out from a bath and had gone to the balcony to hang his towel to dry. Incidentally, the balcony railings had been replaced with new ones on Sunday. D'Costa tried to lean over the newly cemented railings, when the railing gave way and he fell off the first floor. (H) ARCHDIOCESE TO HONOUR BL TERESA: Mother Teresa after being declared blessed by Pope John Paul II will be honoured by the Archdiocese of Goa in the open-air pandal in front of Bom Jesus Basilica, Old Goa, on 22 November. The highlight of the programme will be the depiction on the life of Mother Teresa, which will be staged by the famous Konkani artiste Prince Jacob and his troupe. The celebrations start at 9.30 am and will end by 12 noon. This will begin with the Eucharistic celebration to be presided over by the Archbishop Patriarch.
